Coarse salt can be ground pretty easily in a food processor or a good blender. Something to consider since the coarse salt doesn’t penetrate as well.

Salting the green hides is to remove the liquid (soluble proteins). I asked the makers of HTF if I could start with step 4 when the hides were fleshed and dried for market. They said yes so I tried it. I relaxed with salt bath, thinned, washed, hung to dry a little, then applied the HTF. It seemed to work exactly the same as starting with green hides and salting. Any one else done it this way? Try it and see if it works for you.

Ok thank you did like the video. So you helped me long time ago with how to get wax cheap. So I'm watching the video and I see the rock salt and the table salt and I'm thinking...Don't know just in my head (no real world to back me up)...But you got the rock salt and I turn sugar into powder sugar in a blender. So could you take lets say take a $50 magic bullet blender and turn rock salt into salt. A) you could do 5 lbs at the kitchen then use. And B) you could save a blade and a cup for just that and have another blade and cups for everyday life. Find a friend that has one to see is it will make the salt fine enough for you. I have a blendtec blender but you got money in that...But $50 more and you have a new jar and blade. Just my 2 cents.

+nevrbluffs I've seen the pelts of cow, deer, rabbit, coyote, fox sell in online auctions for $45-65ea . Practically anything you can make will sell, usually within a week. Fox is always big, just buy a new inexpensive vinyl handbag, cover one side in fox, hang it's tail on the end, do a professional job & you've made about $65 & the buyer pays for the shipping. Of course most decent prices of fur sell best in the winter months especially just before Christmas.

So question Brother... If I’m just salting to dry them to send to the Tannery, do I need to remove the membrane before salting? I have a horse and a deer in the basement that are thawing. The tanner requires that they be salted. So once they thaw I remove the excess meat any sizeable meat chunks. Then all I should do is salt them. 24 hours later shake it off and salt it again correct? Then they are okay to ship is that correct? Should I leave the salt on the hide when I ship it or should it be dry, salt removed then shipped? Does the membrane need to be removed before I do the salting or will it penetrate the hide with that membrane?

It is a heavily debated subject however everything I have read says you can use either. It is usually cheaper to get non iodine salt anyway and not having the iodine means one less chemical that could potentially mess with your tanning solution. I have used both and have not noticed any differences.

Don’t worry about salt with or without iodine. I use a 50lb bag of cattle salt, it’s extremely cheap and works really well. I’ve never had a problem with iodized salt. Edit: Cattle salt is pretty coarse so I use a blender to powderize it

@@mikewhitman745 I have been told it does. However I’m not 100% sure but before I used cattle salt regular any salt worked five I’d just buy what’s on sale.

If you're gonna tan the hide, do you need to let the hide dry first?
