✅Tank Take 2 - Vinyl Wrap in Real-Time
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Check us out on Bikeskinz.com and Facebook.com/Bikeskinz. (read more below)
Purpose of this video:
This is a new tank wrap installation video that supersedes the old tank installation videos. Shot in almost real-time, this video shows how to quickly and easily install the wrap for the tank without removing the tank and also trimming to the edge (using 3M Primer 94) in order to save time. Also in this video, you'll learn how to use "Knifeless Finishing Tape", a new product that allows you to create precise cuts for trimming and setting up seams without the risk of cutting into the paint or plastic of your bike's bodywork.
Other Notes:
Some people are worried about open flames around a gas tank. That's fine, feel free to buy and use a heat gun. By the way, DOT-approved gas tanks don't have leaking gas or fumes emanating out.
Some people are worried about cutting with an EXacto knife against paint at the edge and behind trim panels. That's fine too, feel free to use Knifeless Finishing Tape there if you desire.
Some people notice there are no distinct side graphics, so the tank could have possibly been done in one piece. Good point, we often do that especially if there are no distinct graphics and there's a front tank trim piece, it's easy to do a front and back, versus two sides and a top.

Awesome video. Found your video after two day of just about giving up! We followed it step by step and my bike turned out perfect. We wrapped the tank and the front and side fairing of my Versys X300 in matte black vinyl. Thanks again!

I was about to leave a very similar comment, but decided I’d read a few comments first and yours was the first one. I’ve been trying to wrap a Vespa scooter and nearly gave up last night. But I’m so glad I saw this video & love your thorough explanation of each little aspect of the process! I’ve watched so many other vinyl wrapping how-to videos, but haven’t found a motorcycle/scooter video as thorough as yours. Thank you!
This did actually come out good, but my Lord you would have saved so much time and effort doing this in one piece. This was filmed 3 years ago so I can't really blame you... there are so many better and easier techniques that have come about since then.

I'd have to see it to believe it. One piece on these tanks with compound curves, you'll get so much wrinkles
ive had great luck with your kits. I just did a helmet. I made a jig for my vise it is priceless simple 2x4 wrapped in bath towels. take your time this should take 3 hours!

hi there, great video- and although i have done this a few times it has helped seeing someone elses take on things! would the knifeless tape cut through the 3d carbon effect type wrap too? this method looks like exactly the sort of thing i need, however, the 3d type is a lot thicker than standard vinyl
well done.

Excellent tutorial, learned a lot from it, got a question though, I don't know if I skipped a part or if it wasn't described. When you use the torch in the gas tank, shoukd we make sure the tank is full/empty or it doesn't matter? I knew that the gas fumes can ignite instantly. What is your recommendation.
@bikeskinz
9 жыл бұрын
It's simple, just keep the gas cap closed. Same theory of grilling on a propane grill and that's not even a closed system, you have open flame near a tank with gas in it. Perfectly safe.
I have never used any kind of wrap on anything.Your video just answered all kinds of questions. My problem is the complex curves of a 36" model sailboat, watching you do that tank gives me hope that this just might work. How ever I am trying to duplicate the Hugo Boss boat which has a chrome finish. From what I understand the chrome wrap does not stretch as much.
@bikeskinz
9 жыл бұрын
William McKelvy That's right, the chrome doesnt, and it shows stretch marks
Awsome job!!!!! I'm gonna do that to my 1998 vfr800 streetfighter. Thanx.
Holy shit your good at wraping
I like the striping tape you are using. I had noticed that while clearing excess you were taking care to not contact the paint with your knife but when you cut the first layer on the LH side you used the knife directly on the vinyl with the paint just on the other side. I would assume that you were using light pressure, but wouldn't you prefer to drop the striping tape first so that you have a back stop to cut into if you were to over-cut?
@bikeskinz
7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the knifeless finishing tape is better to use anytime you'd be cutting against paint. If I had to do this again I wouldn't have done it that way, it was kinda an on the fly video and done 5 years ago. I think at the time I didn't think it would matter since it's behind where the plastic tank trim went.
doing it in 1 part is the hard ;) this is easy
@bikeskinz
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, way easier to get the sides even with two sides and a top, also less wrinkles to have to stretch out, which mean the color stays better.
thanks!
Thanks

I'm replacing the tank on my bike but instead of painting, I'm considering this wrap technology... How durable is it? will it stand to the elements like paint, or does it have to be treated with more care? BTW... Excellent video and instructions, and you certainly made it look easy but not sure if I'll be able to do it myself though.
@bikeskinz
9 жыл бұрын
Sam Armor its pretty durable. You wouldn't want to drag a boot across it with buckles, but you wouldn't do that with paint either. Its good to go with gas and oil, just wipe it off and clean it. But I've tested piece with gas on it over night and it doesn't eat through it. You don't want get gas near a seam though. That would soften the adhesive and could cause problems. I'm sure Acetone and brake fluid wouldn't do so great though. If you have any more questions email us through our bikeskinz site, we're also on Facebook
Hi. I used your video to help me wrap my Kawasaki ZX6r gas tank and it came out GREAT!!!!! I have noticed now that the seams that on the top of the tank (which connect the side and top vinyl piece) are lifting. What do you suggest to help fix this issue. I'm using the 3M vinyl carbon fiber wrap. Thanks for your suggestions!!! Your video was AWESOME!!
@bikeskinz
8 жыл бұрын
+Heather Weisbrot (Helmet Hed) Some of the other 3M products like the carbon fiber stuff doesn't perform like the 3m cast vinyl we use. You may could try the Primer 94 made by 3M. You could maybe call Feller's and they'll help you diagnose it.
thank you for the video. got a question - if you are doing ajob like that (naked bike no side plastic) what do you charge ?

whats the name of the green tape? where can i buy it? thanks!
Couldn't do it in one piece? I'm about to tackle a 2006 Ducati Monster tank and the curve where you tuck your knees in are pretty deep.
@bikeskinz
7 жыл бұрын
Sure, you can do it in one piece. It's harder for some tanks that have more side area instead of a lot of plastic trim that comes up the side. It's also hard to have a graphic that has equal specific side graphics because when you're wrapping as one piece you can't control the placement like you can't if the sides were separate. This graphic on this particular tank is just stormy clouds in the design, so it's kinda not as good of an example of the purchase of why do it in pieces I know.
Just wondering if you were to lay out the knife tape for the center section on the tank then put the side panels and centre panel on then pull the knife tape, would the knife tape go through both and would the sides perfectly line up with the centre so there is no overlap line?
@bikeskinz
8 жыл бұрын
+W0rp3D No you really want to have an overlap with this stuff. If you don't it will pull apart.

Would you suggest first taking off the bike branding? I'm thinking about wrapping my bike and was wondering if i first need to take off the original stickers or if i can just wrap over it without the stickers being too visible. I noticed how the kawasaki logo was not that visible after the wrap was applied.
@bikeskinz
7 жыл бұрын
It's a risk/reward preference. In my opinion its not worth it for the work involved in sanding the factory tank decals because they are clear coated. Plus that makes it where you can't take it back to factory if you're tired of the wrap or are trying to sell the bike.

question, how does the oil from your hands affect the adhesion of the wrap? just since it takes so much manipulation to get it to sit correctly.
@bikeskinz
8 жыл бұрын
+ThatGUY1027 Excellent question. I may have mentioned this in one of my other videos. You don't want to be handling this material in a room that's so hot your hands sweat. If you're hands are just sweating slightly, say in a 70 degree room, you can get away with wiping your hands with alcohol every so often.
May I ask why do you use a Blow torch instead of a Heat Gun? Is it more accurate or just preference? Thanks for ANY info ..
@bikeskinz
7 жыл бұрын
You can use either one. Most of the time with a bike you're heating a smaller area so it's kinda faster and more convenient.
Probably not, the knifeless tape is made for the wraps only I think.
Do you have link or info on that wrap? That design/color is nice!!!

two questions how do you do that to a matte painted motorcycle? how do you wrap the fenders especially the front one cuz if you cut it right at the edge the water can get into it and over the period of very little time the wrap will leave the fender
@bikeskinz
7 жыл бұрын
This stuff sticks to matte. For wrapping and trimming to the edge you definitely want to use the 3M primer 94 at the edge. In the past I've wrapped to the edge and not used the Primer 94 and it will pull back from the edge on ya if it's not heat set.

is it possible to do this with one big piece?
@bikeskinz
8 жыл бұрын
+james B For this bike's tank, and for this design on the wrap, yes. We've also wrapped other bikes with one piece. Most of our designs on our site do however have graphics on the side of the tank which make it hard to get the distance and angle correct if it was done in one piece. Also stretching/shrinking for the relief as a 1 piece is more difficult, and in some cases will require a relief cut. Doing a tank in 3 pieces is a little easier for most.
Where can I buy a torch like that?👍🏼
@bikeskinz

We now recommend a heat gun, the one I use now is a variable temp Bauer from Harbor Freight, about $25

Have you attempted a one piece wrap for a tank?
@bikeskinz
9 жыл бұрын
Sure, on some tanks you can do one piece. You need a lot more measurements to get tank side graphics on both sides to position correctly. This one obviously doesn't have side graphics so it's confusing to people why we're installing it with two sides, it lets you have less excess wrinkles to stretch out on most tanks.

It varies, we set these up with templates so you have individual pieces that are oversized. If you just buy solid colors or patterns by the yard you're going to do a lot of guess work and have a lot of wasted material.
