Tank Duels in Ukraine - Analysis
Tanks are undoubtedly a big part of the current war in Ukraine, where both Russia and Ukraine are utilizing a big amount of them to fight the other side. But the footage of actual tank on tank combat appears to be extremely rare.

Something I have noticed is there doesn't seem to be massive vehicle actions. No large scale tank on tank ops. Just individual tanks either fighting each other or being hit by ATGMs. I don't know if this is because of the time of the year, it seems to be the mud season, OR no one wants to concentrate their operations for some other reason, maybe artillery concerns. This surprises me since we are not that far from Kursk and the scene of that massive tank and tank battle. Can someone educate me on this?

If I had to guess: Hardware is scarce on both sides, and there's a subsequent aversion to staking it all on a large battle - the buildup to which can be spotted and countered well in advance by modern surveillance and artillery in concert. Hardware losses cannot easily be replaced as they could by WW2 Soviet tank production, which, aside from being unparallelled to this day, could churn out fighting vehicles that were far less complex and expensive than what's required to be effective today. Quantity over quality seems to be less relevant than ever. Also, the Russians did start the war off with a large scale armoured & mechanised offensive towards Kiev, and we all saw how that turned out.

Very spectacular was the IFV on IFV and IFV on tank battles in the early phase of the war, with that one Ukrainian BTR-4 crew taking out several IFVs and tanks in at least two "gun cam" videos. Then there was a video of autocannon fire at the rear of 2 T-72B3, very likely by a BTR-4 as well, so 30 mm fire. Both tanks were hit in the rear multiple times and iirc abandoned by their crews. There was also some fire and damage that looked like a shot out transmission that leaked a bunch of oil under one of the tanks. You couldn't see the vehicle that fired though, but it was definitely autocannon fire and the info claimed it to be a BTR-4. It happened around the same time as the other incidents I mentioned, when the battle for Mariupol was still raging.

You'd be amused to know that during WWII, despite all allied tanks looking clearly different from German ones, crews on both sides had issues id'ing them, many times leading to their demise, as it's the case on the well known, famous Pershing Vs. Panther video in Köln. The Panther didn't open fire first because they thought the Pershing was German, while being just 100 meters away or less. Otto Carius, a German tank ace, also tells in his book that once he held the order to fire for a second, against the side of a distracted IS-2, simply because he wondered if that was a King Tiger, that could've been captured by the Russians. Anyway, the usual is, this line here is our front, everything that comes towards us is the enemy.

обычно союзных таков на одном направлении не много, так что увидел танк не сомневайся бей это враг 100% по крайней мере если ты с Украинской стороны.
I suppose the rarity of tank on tank footage is because: 1. The uneven weapons situation in the early phase of the war, with Ukraine relying on light infantry while Russia brought the heavy weapons sledgehammer. In this situation Ukraine would try to preserve their limited number of tanks and only field them in highly targeted operations or very cautious positions instead of aiming for open brawls. 2. The fact that the vast majority of tank knockouts really was scored by ATGMs and artillery. 3. The exceptional lethality of tanks against visible targets, including other tanks. We generally rarely see tanks shooting at any visible target. It's usually fire into concealment or from very long range, because any engagement against a visible target will be over at an instant and is therefore unlikely to be caught on camera. 4. Because both sides rarely publish footage from situations where they use drones to lead ground units. There has been some such footage, but it's clearly only a tiny fraction of how often it's actually used. 5. Because these tanks only have 3 man crew, no passengers, and no integrated means to film footage, so "POVs" are rare. 6. Because tank units have higher opsec than average infantrymen. What we get instead is the easy to film, insensitive footage: 1. Drone attacks or observation of artillery strikes - easy to access the digital footage and little sensitive information is shown, since the enemy already knows where they got struck. 2. Stugna, which is easy to film thanks to its remote control setup. 3. Passengers without active combat role filming from BTRs and BMPs. 4. The occasional helmet go-pro, at a roughly similar rate to tank-mounted go pro footage.

@thegenericguy8309

The increase in caliber in Soviet tanks was not really for APFSDS performance reasons. The energy potential of the 125 is always going to be higher than the 115, it's mainly that the 115's shells were standardized to a more modern design sooner because the older shells had a higher deficit to make up for while the 125's older shell designs were still perfectly fine. The real reason for the size increase, however, was for better high explosive shells. The Soviets placed a very high emphasis on tanks as field artillery and the 125's high explosive shell was so big it could in some cases double as anti-armor, being capable of penetrating the front of a T-34 in tests

Because of how central artillery has been in this conflict, if there is no visible opponent tank, my first assumption, regardless of what descriptions say, is that it's a tank being taken out by artillery. I have noticed there are often some very odd and seemingly very big cuts in footage that can be very eyebrow-raising once you see it.
a lot of tank commanders have said that tank on tank battles don't usually happen because half the time if they see a tank they don't wanna go out of their way of fighting another tank and risking the artillery fire so they tend to avoid those type of tank on tank duels
@greg.kasarik
Жыл бұрын
Thing is, that if these tanks were operating within a troop (or platoon), they should be able to radio in a contact report and direct another tank to take the shot. Artillery fire really isn't that big a problem for a closed down tank. Yes, certain modern ammunition can be accurate to within a few metres, but this isn't the kind of accuracy you get from traditional artillery, or rockets, but is what is needed in order to damage a tank. Most artillery kills on tanks are actually mobility kills, in which the track is broken, or otherwise damaged. This is the point at which most crew will bail, because they are now a sitting duck.

Tank footage is rare because of its specific, in tank battle you don't want to get to close to enemy, since they are easy to spot and very blind... So when takes out a target at 1km or more, we can see only the tank shooting or only target being hit. Seeing two at the same time is barely possible

isnt that because most times, tanks engage each other at long range where regular camera's often cant spot the other target and its very hard to get both of them on screen at the same time. the only bits of tank on tank footage we have from any conflicts is usually basically point blank.

In case you haven't noticed almost EVERYTHING you see on this war is Ukrainian biased. You can almost guarantee it's the truth if a non-Russian source writes about a Russian victory. They never get covered until absolutely undisputable, and even yet they're often ignored in favour if tiny Ukrainian pyrrhic victories. Weirdly enough if feels a lot less like I'm being lied to when I see Russian successes.
There was a brilliant tank to tank battle recorded between an AFU T-64 and BTR-4 team against several Russian T-72's. After some firing and maneuvering some serious close quarters fighting evolves with the BTR down and a head to fight at 50M between the T-64 and lead T-72. After a series of misses from both sides, the T-64 finally gets taken out. I would be curious to opinions as to why both tanks missed at such close range. I recall the missed shots (UFA miss, Rus miss, AFU miss, Rus hit on T-64) going low, striking the ground in front of the opposing tanks. Hope you can find it!

Probably due to the barrel being offset from the sight. We train on everybody’s position in the M1A2 SEP, and we train to account for this. Most likely both crews were running off of pure adrenaline and forgot about it, since they were more experienced at engaging targets at range and not expecting a close quarters knife fight (tank fight)
The last video if complicated to evaluate. Is the tank hit the operable one or is the other one? There is no more of the video?
Ukraine is mostly wide open country, so tanks can be miles apart as they shoot at each other. At those ranges, any video that shows both would have to be taken from so high up they'd be dots. Neither side seems to have rigged their sights with any kind of recording device, as well. The only POV shots I've seen are wide angle Go-Pros mounted on the outside of tanks, where I usually couldn't tell what the target was.
Good analysis. I'm glad that you are able to track these down and present them to us. As a former tank soldier, I suspect that there are actually very few tank on tank battles happening in this war. It seems to me that most of the heavy armour is being taken out by man portable missiles, because these have a larger range and are far easier to deploy from a camouflaged position. I suspect that the tanks are being used to support the infantry, rather than take on other tanks directly, as would have been the case during a cold war conflict, or the two Gulf Wars. A tank is both noisy and very easy to see on a battlefield, whereas a modern AT infantry section of two, or three troops is the exact opposite. I suspect that the reason that we are seeing more Russian tanks firing on Ukrainian ones is because they have basically depleted their stocks of modern AT weapons, so are forced to rely on tanks, in situations where the Ukrainian infantry can dismount, before reaching out and touching someone from a range that by far exceeds that of any tank gun. Also, the footage being shown really demonstrates that despite there being solid and well established "front lines", the tanks appear to be operating individually and not in troops (platoons), and are not providing each other with supporting fire. This is something, I'd expect from poorly trained crews, so is perhaps indicative of just how many experienced tank soldiers each side has lost since the beginning of the conflict.

@@MrPool-zn9lz It is impossible for anyone (including the Russians), to know how much viable ammunition is in the system. It is no secret that corruption is endemic and this places an effective blinder over what we can know. All any of us can do is look at what the troops are being issued on the ground. The fact that troops were being issued with ancient 19th Century rifles mere months into the conflict, as opposed to the highly effective AK series of weapons indicates a likely shortage of AK ammunition of various types. And yes, for some unknown reason the Russians have thousands of these and their ammunition in storage. In Australia, we literally threw our old Lee Enfields into the sea, rather than keep ancient rubbish from cluttering our logistics. The fact that there are numerous documented cases of newly mobilised Russian conscripts being issued with rusty weapons indicates a lack of good quality weapons in storage. Similarly, the fact that they are bringing T-62 and T-64 tanks out of storage also indicated significant issues, as the T-72 and later tanks are really the only ones that should be on a modern battlefield and even then, only once they've been upgraded with thermal sights. Similarly, the fact that they are relying so heavily on Iranian drones indicates that they've severely depleted their stocks of ground to ground missiles. This was actually evident months ago, when they started repurposing S-300 launchers into the ground attack role. Also, as I pointed out, the way in which they are using equipment seems to suggest they are lacking in certain weapon categories, such as modern ATGMs. Sure, there are lots of RPG-7s, but you need to get suicidally close to an enemy tank in order to use one. So, while we can't say for sure that the Russians are running out of usable equipment, the evidence points to significant issues within their logistics (what good equipment they have isn't getting where it needs to be) and an ongoing incapacity to supply the modern equipment that their soldiers will need to win on the ground. We'll find out more in the coming months. If, as I expect, the Russians fail to equip properly for winter, we'll know that this is a generalised problem, not just the random chance of certain issues bubbling to the surface, because they make good clickbait.

Of course until they fix their engine and manufacturing issues... and get more money and electronics they might actually start building them. They have a lot of tanks to replace now... almost a clean slate. :P

I assume these kinds of duals would be very hard to get on video. I think the video of the Ukrainian tank taking out the Russia tank is probably a reenactment that they did for propaganda purposes. Like they called in a drone to video them “finishing it off” even though they just took it out. Since most tank duels are theoretically supposed to take place miles away there may be many that are just impossible to get on video. This is a decent analysis. I do believe you are correct, the first video seems to be to janke to be genuine. The second one though does seem to be at least mostly on the level. Don't know the specifics of the video but it is pretty much certain one tank knocked out another.
Tanks are not meant to fight at close range so being able to get both tanks in one shot would be rare. Much of the footage of vehicles including tanks being blown up in this war could be from artillery or tanks(or mines even), often all one sees is an explosion and that is it and as we can see from the confirmed tank hits on other tanks, it looks pretty similar if not the same to what could be attributed to artillery.
For the infantry to dismount on the non combat side, Im guessing in the last video given their positions were retreating or ambushed from the rear, and following solid doctrine Infatry dismounted to provide cover for the T64s after the first tank was downed in order to cover them while they secure the area against further advances from Russian Armor / infantry. Given the extremely poor FoV most soviet/russian tanks are known for I wouldnt be surprised that actual tank battles are initiated by drones, or scouts spotting enemy armor first.

A lesson learned from WW2 is that the cannon, be it mounted on a tank or a truck, is the most viable mobile anti-tank weapon and should be deployed in large numbers to counter enemy tanks. Due to modern tank fleets being smaller than they were during WW2, tanks are considerably less likely to run into each other on the battlefield these days. Also, the tank destroyer (light AFV with cannon) has been replaced with trucks and helios carrying ATGMs, with can respond to concentrated armoured attacks as quickly or faster than tanks themselves. This is significant because ATGMs have a longer effective range than the cannon, dwindling the tank's numbers before they can get within effective range of each other. If the number of tanks on the battlefield increased and/or ATGMs became less viable due to APS, the supremacy of the cannon would return.
