I have the both the 28-200mm and the 24-105mm. I am going thru the same struggle. I find myself always reaching for the 28-200mm when ever I am going out for a hike or just walking around. It is very versatile. I don't notice much difference in sharpness at all. I am still hanging on the 24-105mm because it is such a good lens, but I rarely use it since I purchased the Tamron.

Difficult choice. It is difficult to bring a lot of zoom lenses in the bag. So one that cover more is better. However we want also quality lens. I have the tamron 17-28 probably the best for me would be to go with the 28-200. If i take the sony 24-104 i have also to take the tamron 70-300 which is even better focal but i need more heavy lenses in the bag. Very difficult to choose. The 24-105 must be better lens better autofocus in low light with the stabilization. Right?

@@CC-gt3ro @C C Funny you mention the low light performance. I just noticed it for the first time a few days ago. The Tamron 28-200mm struggled a bit to get focus in low light. I don't use it that often on the long end in low light. I have not experienced the same focusing struggles on the wide end wide open. I do have to be more careful with the Tamron with shutter speed because of the lack of stabilization. It's just something I adjust for. Right now I seem to always have in a backpack the 17-28mm, 28-200mm and the Sigma 100-400mm.

This is basically a 28-75 f/2.8-4 that also goes to 200mm. Replaced two lenses in my bag. Best superzoom I’ve ever shot. Demolishes the Sony 24-240. Makes the 24-105/4 and 28-75/2.8 pretty irrelevant. It’s my go-to lens for everything, most especially Disney World, zoos, and the airport. Like you, I have two kids (age 3 and 5), we have a dog... I have a wife that doesn’t especially need me changing lenses. 28-200 all the way!

Just found your video and I think your down to earth view on this lens gets it completely right. You mentioned all that matters for everyday life of a photographing family parent. Leave pixel peeping and tech overkill to others 😉 I love my 28-200 for it’s reach and compactness. To compensate for the loss on the wide end I added a tiny Samyang/Rokinon 18mm 2.8. Now I have 18-200 in a small camera bag.

Tks for your review. I'm travelling a lot and I've had in the past the most versatile Sony 24/240. Large span of focals but quite average and not enough sharpness with a A7R3. Good for a A7 serie. Now when I'm travelling and for familly shots, I'm using the RX10IV and this tool is the most versatile, compact and high quality, and also light for any situation. So yes it's an "only" 1" sensor, but for small prints and social media, it exceeds the requested quality.

Great thoughts at the end! As an ex-wedding photog, thinking less on the "best" lens is no longer a priority given it's not a paid gig but like a wedding photog/photojournalism, getting the shot is more important than thinking if the corners are sharp or not. Without a second body, you'll more often than not miss that shot with a sharp but limited zoom lens.

Or a Sony 24-200mm f2.8-5.6. Or a Sony or Tamron 28-300mm f2.8-6.3. Currently we could combine tamron 17-28 with Sony 24-105 and tamron 70-300 if we don’t care switching lens which give you the best focal length coverage OR 17-28 and 28-200 is probably the best duo and using crop mode to get the 300mm

I bought 2 days ago the a7c and tamron 17-28. What a fantastic camera! My wife and I are impressed by the quality of the photos. I didn’t tested the video yet. But i can tell i like the compactness. The total weight with the lens is already 939g i would not want a bigger body. The flip screen is fabulous and i was pleasantly surprised by the evf. As a contrary of many reviewer i found the screen large enough very clear and responsive. I come from a 2010 Canon camcorder. This sony a7c evf is impressive, very big to my opinion.. i have not seen bigger body evf but I haven’t a good sight and i have no issue at all without any glasses with the evf inside. Maybe outside with the sun will be different but inside it is perfect to me. I love the sony a7c. I will keep it for many years. It is impressive. Now i need either a tamron 28-200 or a duo sony 24-105 and tamron 70-300 but my wallet tell me the tamron 28-200 will probably be the winner. I also need a gimbal and flash so i need to make some choices. I wait also a grip extender from Sony as my pinky does not cover the body. It is a new camera but in few months a tons of accessories will be available. I have already seen a smallrig cage and screen protector and hand strap

I'd say if u already have the Sony, stick with it, otherwise get the Tamron. I do have the Sony 100-400 as well, so if I need more reach especially for wildlife I use that. Also, Sony A7RIV in apsc mode would make compromise the 24-105 for the 95mm focal lenght loss.

Totally agree with your final thought and may I ask in taking family (or a running-around baby for me) photo, which one would be the better choice? I'm now considering to switch from my 24-105 to 28-200 which might a more handy and versatile choice. Having my 24-105 now, and good to use in terms of focusing speed on A7RIV outdoor. However at indoor condition, my 24-105 losses quite a lot of focusing speed and accuracy and I guess 28-200 performs similarly. So would you prefer switching to 28-200 which the 28-200 may still provides enough focus speed to face-track the running baby outdoor? Thank you.

@@Tech4Baba Finally I've got the 28-200. To compare both 24-105 and 28-200 on my A7RIV body, both lenses are very sharp to me. 24-105 has a relatively promising focus speed and accuracy, but 28-200 is still good enough if not shooting children. 28-200 is exceptionally sharp when shooting macro or animals, and Bokeh is good for me too. However, I found 28-200 loss so much detail when shooting red/magenta flowers, I'm not sure if this is problems of my setting or related to the lens. To conclude, I intend to keep 24-105 instead of 28-200 because of the focus speed, and will probably get another tele-lens for macro and animals shooting. Thank you for your suggestion!

I am event photographer and I currently have Sony bodies A72 and A73, but A73 being my main body and I have Tamron 28-75 2.8mm which so far has done well, but I have reached the point that I really need that larger zoom, also because I travel and do a lot of hiking, I often find that 28-75mm is just not reaching enough. 28-200mm sounds like a great option for both-travelling and event photography. I am considering to sell my Tamron 28-75 2.8mm and get one prime lens for low light with F1.4 of F1.8 instead and therefore I can use both camera bodies. Any suggestions on prime lens for Sony in around 600$? And then main main working gear would be A73 + Tamron 28-200mm? Do you think that would be good set up? I really appreciate any advice. I just bought both Tamrons 17-28mm and 28-20mm, having the wide angle in my backpack is not an issue, the range 17-200 is more than enough, the f/2.8 range from 17 to 35mm is great for lowlight, the lack of image stabilizer over 100mm is best with a tripod if you need best sharpness. Should you use Sony lenses like the 16-35mm and 24-105mm, you do not get everything and the price is another level. I am not professional, yet searching for great pictures. What do you think?

I agree. Thanks for watching and sharing, One common guy! Tamron 17-28mm and 28-200mm is a great combo (and much cheaper). If you'd like an upgrade on the telephoto end, Tamron 70-180mm is a great lens to check out. If you haven't, you can see my thoughts on it here, kzread.info/dash/bejne/k21mx6ihZK21eLA.html. For landscape photography I'd prefer the 28-200. If I need to go wider I doubt that 24mm would be enough anyway. In most situations I would solve the problem simply by creating a panorama and go as wide as I need.

Thanks for watching wantplaces555! If a longer zoom is what you are looking for, between 28-200 and 24-105, I'd consider 28-200 for its extra reach. Better yet, Tamron 70-180mm would be a great constant F/2.8 lens for events. You can check out my thought on it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k21mx6ihZK21eLA.html.

I already have the tamron 17-28 f2.8 fantastic lens. Now between sony 24-105 and tamron 28-200 it is very difficult to choose. The sony has stabilization and 24mm and slightly better autofocus which make it better in low light and great color and it is a Sony lens. The Tamron has 2.8 at 28, is more lightweight without the stabilization and have 200mm and longer warranty and is far less expensive. Very difficult to pick. You can add the tamron 70-300 very affordable and good telephoto to the 24-105 but now you have 2 lens to switch but even farther focal range at 300mm . However it cost a lot of money to buy 2 lenses instead of the 28-200. Because i have the 17-28 the 28-200 would make sense. Until Tamron create a good 28-300 f2.8-6.3 in the futur..why not?

Interesting video. It looks like you are comparing apples to oranges. Both good fruits but very different. Personally, I can't give up IQ and 4mm more on the wide end, if you have ever overlapped a 24mm on top a 28mm exact composition image you'll see how significant it is. As to the loss of one full stop from f/2.8 to f/4, modern lens design, camera IBIS+OSS and ISO make up for it; and f/2.8 Bokeh is not that good and very comparable to f/4. Finally, the extra reach is worthless to me if the images are going to be average at best. I don't disagree with your final thoughts and I also believe that making memories are more important, however, why not strive to make those memories with quality? It's not about pixel peeping, it's simply about creating quality memories. BTW, the 24-70mm is #1,049.00 at the moment. If you can afford the native lens it will always be better. I forgot to mention that the Sony lens is weatherproof (moisture, dust) and shock resistant.
