Tamiya Monster Beetle Black Edition First (Short) Run

So finally got out for the first (short) run with the Monster Beetle. Had some gremlins that cut is short and it will be getting fixed soon I was able to run it long enough to make a quick video. Things break and the failed part was a cheap one but I have had really good luck up until now with them so we are calling it a fluke thing!!

I finally made up my mind after waffling between getting the red one (childhood dream car) and discovering the black edition after getting back into RC a few months back. After seeing yours, I will go ahead and get the black one, but now of course Amazon is out of stock, and so my $200 gift card I just redeemed for this purpose will wait. I'm looking forward to adding this to my collection--I had forgotten how much fun R/C was as a kid, and now as an adult, I can afford the hobby grade stuff I used to dream of as a middle school and high school kid. Thanks for making this video.

YES! Be careful though, they multiply very fast and you may just find yourself surrounded by dozens of them quickly!!! I am glad you enjoyed it and sorry to be the bad influence on you but the black on does looks amazing! I do suggest painting it. I have some molded in the black bodies I have just decaled and they look fine but this one has a good bit of mold lines you will want to scrape/sand off and then paint. It looks so much better with the glossy black paint on it! I hope you find one soon and get to enjoy it! Amain Hobbies still has them in stock, I know you have Amazon credit, just saying....

Hi Addam, what a great looking Monster Beetle, the colours really suit it beautifully. I suppose a 1 in 20 failure of a budget servo is really too much to endure, especially when spending on other RC models and accessories is already high. I must admit I’ve ordered a few packets of these servos too, from Banggood, they too are the MGG996’s. Anyway, I sure you’ll tease in another servo and have it bashing around in no time. Take care and best wishes. 😊😉😊

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I love the Wild Willy but I will be honest with you, after all the painting and detailing you need to do when building it you kind of don't want to tear it up! It is a really fun one to drive though!! I think the Willy is more fun in smaller areas, like you can enjoy that in a tiny backyard setting whereas the MB you will want a much bigger are to drive it in. Other than that it may end being a coin toss decision!! I am thankful the servo saver did its duty and saved the front end from being wrecked! I do like the way it looks out there for sure and I am glad you enjoyed! I have had a couple of the C-shaped center bits in the servo savers in the past, either from hitting something or I did have one that snapped for no reason. It is definitely the servo in this case, I was frustrated when I could not get it to do it on camera but you can hear see the servo rotate all the way around in circles. The bottom part where it is spline on stays rotating with it and the top part stays slammed to one side and that C-shaped center is spreading open to allow the bottom to spin around and not over twist the front end pieces. It is just one of those random electrical gremlins that show up from time to time and a quick servo swap should be all that is needed. Thanks as always for stopping by and checking in!

They are fun, just wish I had gotten a little longer with it! I am pretty sure it is the potentiometer in it that is messing up as it will get around to self centering and work right for a while but then all of sudden just loses itself and starts rotating around and I am pretty sure it happened once to the left and once to the right so I think the signal inside is getting missed to stop. If it was the tab broken it would do it all the time I think. Either way it is getting replaced and I am going to see if I can make a winch out f it as that seems what it wants to be when it grows up!! Thanks as always for stopping by and checking in!

@@AddamsPlayground yeah that happened two a couple of mine, one time one of mine was doing that and I sprayed that electronic cleaner for contacts and stuff inside the potentiometer and it worked.... it also may have been just corroded dirty inside it and maybe from wiggling it back and forth it could have cleaned the contacts now?

It is a really cool kit and I absolutely love this black edition of it. The grey chassis and the decals just look tough! The red version is great as well and is super classic. I have those servos in the majority of my cars as they are cheap.and many don't get run very often. Those that do get run more often still have them in there. I think of the roughly 40 I have used I have only had one failure and one act glitchy and noisy so they are not perfect but for $5 each they are worth the gamble. I have not had one fail from use, just failed due to the servo itself being wonky. If it is something you are going to run all the time or race with them get a good one. If it is a shelf queen you are going to run a few times a year then definitely. Ones in between that is up to you but overall I am happy with them and keep a.habdful in stock all the time.

Yes just been looking at the mg995 speed servo when i seen the mg996R toque shock proof servo for the same price I haven’t tried any if these but i think i will try the 996R as toque is what i want over speed thanks for your advice.

I did get one package of them and to be honest I could tell no difference in them and 995. I assume over all they would be a little tougher but honestly I can't tell you. I have used a handful of the 25 and 35kg servos from Amazon and had no issues with them but they are a bit more expensive. The best high torque servo I have gotten from Amazon for big trucks or crawlers was Flash Hobby 45KG 8.4 volt servo. Running it on standard receiver voltage it was twice as fast feeling and may more powerful feeling than any of the others by far. I need to get a few more to upgrade the 45kg servos I have in the other crawlers, I really liked that one.

Well, if it is any consolation the next time that servo locks on full left again, you can pretend you are driving a monster beetle at a NASCAR track.

LOL, I sat there for about 4 or 5 minutes cranking back and forth and wiggling that stupid thing all around trying to get it to mess up on camera.... guess I should have been recording with that camera outside!! the electrical gremlins are the worst and most unpredictable kinds there are for sure. I am just going to replace it and see if I can make this one a winch servo since that seems to be it's calling in life! Thanks as always for stopping by and checking in!
