Tamiya CC-01 | Is This A Mitsubishi Pajero, Shogun Or Terrible Mistake?!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

So yeah, as an MP would explain, eBay was opened, mistakes were made and lessons were learned. Unfortunately we'll never know by who.
What's more, measures have not been put in place to ensure this never happens again.
A few things: I know this is a very old design; this is not me hating on Tamiya (I'm a fan of a lot of their stuff - just not every bizarre choice they make); and I'm in no way expecting this to perform like a modern crawler. Or any crawler at all... when I mention crawling in the video, it's more habit than anything. Really I mean 'go down a footpath or over a 1cm bump without getting stuck.'
I also need it to do less than about 20mph, because why would you want this to go that fast anyway?
In fact, because I'm basically very stupid, I've already decided the next kit I build will be a Tamiya, and frankly it'll be even less capable than this one...
So anyway, if you're complaining in the comments, you should have read this bit first...

The thing is the CC-01 is quirky and that's the appeal to me. One thing I have on mine is the drop rear shock arms, that allows more actuation. But it will never be a top crawler but it's more of a challenge to drive. The thing to take into account when this came out there was no crawling in 1993 like there is now.

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have said 'crawling,' but it's force of habit! It's scale trailing (scale to the real, barely modified vehicle) I'm after, and I want the chassis to work as well as it can within its limitations. I was disappointed just how far it was from doing that, but not all of that was Tamiya's fault... just some! Anyway, I've been really enjoying working on this car and I'm really happy with how it's turning out. It's feeling much tighter and more controlled already. I'll do more about this one soon! 😎👍

Hey mate 👍 mark Bryan sent me over . I know exactly what you mean with the cc01 . I actually really like it . I understand all it’s problems as I have a few crawler crawlers but tbh I made a build around the racing unimogs they have in the Dakar so wanted it to roost a little bit - and now it’s a camel trophy defender . I did slow it down a bit for that and it still doesn’t crawl but looks decent imo on the dirt trails . Looking forward to what you get up to mate . Best wishes and have a sub 😊👍👍👍

I actually really like this CC-01 now as well - it's been fun trying to fettle it into some sort of shape, and it's all feeling much tighter and closer to its true potential now. I'll do a bit of an update soon on my progress. Thanks for watching! 😎👍

Erm, define 'need'... Tamiya's a funny one, really. I get very nostalgic about them (my first RC was a Rough Rider, and the second a Subaru Brat - plus the whole reason I have a TF2 is the hours I spent staring at the Hilux in the Tamiya catalogue) but I'm definitely not as rose-tinted as some. Their cars really do vary wildly in insanity levels, and as a company they just seem to be oblivious to everything that happens beyond their doors. They're odd! They make some great things, though... my XV-01 chassis, for instance, is fantastic. Very impressive. And most of their bodies look brilliant. What kind of Tamiya would you get?!

@@rccrawlersmid-wales645 I'm not even sure where I'd go with them. I have so many brands right now in my collection that it's difficult to imagine adding yet another platform to the mix. For example, I just picked up a used GMade R1 and instantly fell in deep with how good it actually is for the money. Not very scale, unless you like scale rock buggies. In which case, it looks just like the real thing. I guess for a Tamiya first go, it would probably be a Sand Scorcher. Maybe someday I'll get into brazing and that would be a good one to build a cage for, etc. But that's miles down the road. Thanks and have a great weekend!

Hi Steve, glad you posted this one - the sound on the video is sound, if you know what I mean! Oh yeah, the slop in this chassis is just so sloppy. But looks like you sorted it down to a reasonable level. Those underguards look great, I think I can make some to fit mine out of some sheet aluminium I've got lying around, so thanks for showing that. I just solved the speed issue by plonking in a 80T motor and now it's pretty scale in terms of speed. I also have a 55T for a bit of speed, but I think your reduction gear solution will give you way more torque. That body is going to be a pain to put right, especially those holes and hot glue! Like others here, looking forward to seeing where this project goes. Cheers, mate!

Thanks Mark! Yeah, I just don't need that much speed from it, and would rather have some control at very low speeds - both from the motor and the suspension! It's actually been really fun trying to get both, and I'm much happier with how it is now. Body is all fixed and repainted too. Update soon! Ish! Probably! 😎👍

Hi, Steve. The CC-01 is a mystery to us all, I think. It's generously furnished with slop from the outset, and the glitzy but dodgy 'upgrade' links you had fitted might have been sold cheaply to whoever fitted them as faulty 'seconds', in which case you have paid good money to get sloppy seconds, which is never a good idea. However, I'm impressed by your determination to get this poor mongrel to stagger along the trail and by the steps you've already taken to solve some of its problems.

@@rccrawlersmid-wales645 Ha ha - the original name sums up the way many people have felt when looking at some of Tamiya's designs. I've recently built a CC-02, and the design really isn't too bad. Once you've hurled the ebony tyres in the direction of the bin and swapped the motor and ESC for appropriate items it really can crawl, though it'll never keep up with an SCX-10 or a TRX4.

  • @DoURC
    @DoURC Жыл бұрын

Let's be honest, you don't buy a Tamiya if you want a proper crawler! Even a cheapo other rig is a million times better. But it's a Tamiya, it's like getting in a classic car, rubbish compared to a modern car, but that's not why you drive it. I like to think of the CC01 as a challenge, trying to make it do things it shouldn't. I completely get what you're saying and I think unless you spend the money on proper upgrade parts, the stock Tamiya links etc will serve you better. I love my little CC01. Can it crawl...not really...but its great fun trying! Got to give it to them though, compared to most other Tamiya stuff, it's one tough cookie and the hard bodies are really strong. I'm sure you'll make it much better, but otherwise, just enjoy it for what it is, another crazy Japanese invention that is kinda pointless, very quirky but makes you smile! 🤣👍

I agree about the challenge, and the first one is getting it to be as good as it should be! I've actually been really enjoying the process, too. I probably shouldn't have talked about 'crawling' in the video - force of habit - as really I'm imagining trail driving, and pretty scale trail driving at that. I'll do an update soon as I'm much happier with it now the chassis is tighter, and the look has changed a fair bit too... 😎👍

The two post in the back of the chassis are what the old mechanical speed controller resistor was screwed to, and the lexan Pajero body is the Custom Lowrider version (Tamiya 58627) and is a different shape so probably wouldn't be suitable for window replacements. Love the CC01 for what it is , to be honest I know it gets given a hard time but people do trt and use it for what it was not designed for. Saying that I used to live on Vancouver Island and its nothing but rocks, the CC01 I have used to get other things that even the Traxxas lot were amazed with, these days it has Tamiyas tracks fitted and i just use it in the mud and snow. Well they definitely look pretty with the hard bodies on, and as baffling as some of Tamiya's decisions are I must say it's really grown on me. I didn't buy it expecting SCX10-like performance, obviously, but it really didn't need to be quite as bad as it is! Still, it's been fun tuning and modifying it, and hopefully you'll like the next video...
