Tamiya 1/35 German Hanomag Sd.Kfz. 251/1 - Kit Review

Ойын-сауық

A review of Tamiya's classic Sd.Kfz. 151/1 'Hanomag' German Half-track, model kit, No. 35020, released in 1988.
This model, is a Re-Box (New Box Only), of Tamiya's original 'Hanomag' kit, No. MM120, from 1973.
This older style Tamiya kit, includes 5 German Panzer Grenadier figures, vinyl tracks, a basic painting guide for 2 vehicles (Europe and North Africa), plus Decal that include Individual Vehicle Numbers, and both Tactical and Divisional markings.
An easy "Weekend Build" model kit, suitable for modellers of all experience levels, with great potential for detailing and upgrading.

This kit brings back so many happy memories for me. We were on holiday in Scarborough in 1973 when I was a 13 yr old kid when my mum and dad bought me one. I've still got it in my cabinet and it's a great reminder of my mum and dad who have since passed.

Glad to hear that. It's nice to have something that keeps those memories alive. Being Yorkshire born myself, hear the name Scarborough has the same effect. Cheers from Oz!

I’m building this kit now, it’s good for the age. Much better than Monogram/Revell kits from the same time period.

I fully agree. Despite her age, she still holds up pretty well, and she makes a good platform for adding accessories, and weathering! Cheers!

Built my first Tamiya Hanomag back in the '70's. This is one of those kits that is still very, very, popular even today, and will probably survive for a lot longer yet. Cheers!

Great review, thanks. I've just ordered this kit and thought I'd get an idea of what I'm letting myself in for before it arrives and it looks like I'm going to be happy with it.

For the price it´s a must. Especially if you start with modelling. I wonder how Tamiya made this quality models back then. Oh well, japanese... :)

Agreed, it's a great kit for beginners, and even for experienced modellers wanting a break from "Photo Etch & 10,000 parts" models. Tamiya has always striven for quality, Japanese business philosophy. Yoshio Tamiya, the founder, has a long association with The Tank Museum, at Bovington, for Tamiya's models etc. Cheers!

I was wondering the same thing. I had more fit issues with kits less than half that old. What can you say, it's Tamiya.

I built this a while back and forgot to fill the sink marks on the side, oops! By the time I'd shaded and weathered the model, they had all but disappeared. There's no real point in updetailing the drivers section, you can't really see it anyway once the upper hull is fixed on.

  • @PetesKits

Very true. Once she's built you really can't see the driver area. Same goes for AFV's with full interior. Once they're built, you can only see bits of the interior through the hatches. :) cheers
