Talking About Swiss Style: Wim Crouwel

Wim Crouwel is one of the most influential modernist graphic designers in the Netherlands. In the 1950s he personally made contact with exponents of Swiss graphic design. As part of his work as an independent designer and founding member of the internationally active firm Total Design, Crouwel developed a rational visual language inspired by Swiss Style. His imprint on the visual image of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam lasted for over 20 years.

I once sat in that Rietveld chair in his house when we visited him with a group of students in the 1990s. I didn’t dare move much because it crackled loudly.

He is talking about the new visual identity for the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam that graphic design duo Mevis & van Deursen did around 2012. It's the capital letter S formed by the words 'STEDELIJK MUSEUM'. A visual reference is the museums Twitter profile picture: twitter.com/stedelijk The website of Mevis & van Deursen is here: www.mevisvandeursen.nl Can imagine it being hard to understand what he says if Dutch isn't your native language. ;)
