Well, I collect Swiss posters and own the terrific Brechbuhl poster for this show! Kudos on a great idea for an exhibition.

My understanding is that Switzerland was previously very regionalized because of its terrain. Something like 17 different regions, each with their own flags and different languages spoken. WWII had all the refugees (artists, authors, scientists) flee into Switzerland for safety. This is what really increased the demand for a universal “International Style”…something that communicated clearly to everyone and removed ornamental elements from the design. The old way of visual communication wasn’t going to work in this new world.

The three languages (actually its four but very few speak Romansh), mean Swiss publishers/advertisers/designers had to invent sophisticated grids/layouts to carry three versions of the same text. You are right, the Swiss are international without even leaving Switzerland. I think the urge for a 'new style' was common across the world devastated by two enormous wars, from California to Minsk. A new politics, new art, new architecture, a new direction that would not culminate in such conflict. What it was, though, that differed. Still differs.

A few years ago, I began to collect Swiss posters (mid-century to contemporary), and your eMuseum has been an absolutely invaluable source of information- I refer to it constantly. It's especially important given that this great design tradition is much undervalued and little-seen (to date) in the US. I can't thank you enough for this amazing resource, and hope to visit in person someday.

I just watched today's SRF's reportage ("Kulturplatz - Sammeln macht glücklich") about Sophie Grossmann (towards the end) => interesting! (and I'm an IT-proj.mgr + developer, therefore not at all related to these themes) => I might visit the exposition, thank you (btw. your website is complicated/distracting and not so easy to understand). Cheers :)

Hi Adriano, thank you for your message. The title of the video is a bit misleading. There is no actual documentary about the exhibition, this video is just meant to give a little insight. If you want to know more about it, check out the information in our eMuseum: www.emuseum.ch/exhibitions/1782

@@mfgzh A film based on the exhibition would mean the content and ideas gathered for the exhibition gain ever-new audiences. We are in a screen era now. No one can travel to Zurich in 2015... but anyone can watch a film.

This work is incredibly advanced in its sophistication, and yet its elegance is matched by exuberant provocation -- one that brings visual delight as it challenges conventional standards. Weingart's art is a refreshing alternative in today's art world, which overemphasizes social narratives and figurative expression.
