Talk Back Trembling Lips by Ernest Ashworth
This was a #1 hit for Ernie back in 1963.
Lyrics
Talk back trembling lips, shaky legs don't just stand there
Don't let her know that she's gettin' through to you
Talk back trembling lips, burning eyes don't start crying
Heart don't let her know that you're breaking in two.
Everyday our love's a battle royal
Seems that fighting's all we ever do
But if I let you know how much I love you
You'll do things to me you shouldn't do.
So talk back trembling lips, shaky legs don't just stand there
Don't let her know that she's gettin' through to you
Talk back trembling lips, burning eyes don't start crying
Heart don't let her know that you're breaking in two.
Everytime you up and hurt my feelings
I pretend it couldn't matter less
But I'm just hiding all of my emotions
Behind my broken heart I guess.
So talk back trembling lips, shaky legs don't just stand there
Don't let her know that she's gettin' through to you
Talk back trembling lips, burning eyes don't start crying
Heart don't let her know that you're breaking in two.
Heart don't let her know that you're breaking in two...

The song became the most successful of Ernest Ashworth's career and was his only No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart that October. The song spent 35 weeks on the country chart.[1] The song also bubbled under the Billboard Hot 100, just missing the chart's main listing as it peaked at No. 101. Please remember the family of my good friend Ernie Ashworth, he passed away Monday 3/2/09 from a heart attack, his son Mark said he did not suffer. A #1 hit for Ernest Ashworth on the Country & Western charts. It was the 69th #1 C&W hit in the Rock Era. Ernest, thank you for the memories. We miss you.
I just love classic country. I grew up listening to these songs. This is just great music, so real, so emotional, so fun to listen to.
Who ever the 5 where that didn't like this song cannot have a very good music sense, if they like what they do today, its all rubbish...the 50's and 60's where the best era of all, there will be no icons of today in 50 yrs time, be lucky to last a couple of years.
Classic Country hits the spot every time. Keep it alive!
I hope nobody's getting mad cuz I'm playing the old music I just love your music I grew up with it I would the bars with it I hope everybody's enjoying it thank you

Way back in the day I was a disc jockey for WAGF, a small radio station in Dothan, Alabama. Best job I ever had. Since that time I've been self employed. I enjoy my work a great deal..but that radio job was more fun than a man should be allowed to have. 12 years and I enjoyed every minute.
@hillbilly2bill I sure didn't know that Ernie died! Thank you for telling us about this!

It's a great oldie. Now I prefer Johnny Tillotson's recording, it's a more refined, deeper production. Surprisingly the Tillotson version has always been preferred on stations playing country oldies.

@@timothythorne9464 I also like Johnny's version, but Ernie's was the first and best to me and I did not think much of it when the country stations switched to prefer Johnnys. He had more than enough air play on rock and pop stations, and country should have kept Ernie as their main play. In my humble opinion
GEE WHIZ Y'ALL SHORE POSTED SOME GREAT SONGS HERE ...GREAT CLASSIC COUNTRY SANGERS....THEY DON'T SANG M LIKE THEY USED TO...Labaron 26 ya said it all.......Hillbilly2bill thank ya fer the info above.....when we loose onea these ol' boys we loose an important era in music....Blessins...

Thanks for the nice things you are saying about Ernie. in Feb. he was added to other greats in the Alabama Hall of Fame.. he has lost the love of his life Bettye Rose, but a few weeks ago he did appear on the Grand Ole Opry Again.. in mid October 2008.. you are right they don't make them like this anymore. He is a wonderful guy in person and Bettye was the best..
Rest in Peace Ernie. You will be missed.
Another great song by Ernie,can't beat the 50's and the 60's for great music;
Wow ! I remember this song when I was very young , my Daddy sang and played it on his guitar ! Talking about bringing back memories ! Daddy's singing in Heaven , now!

Too Labaron26; ..i'm glad a few of 'em are still around!!!
I have always loved this song and maybe even more today..Thanks for posting it. Country singers today do not come close to the the country music stars of the 50’s 60’s 70’s and even into the 80’s and 90’s and then it all seemed to change to what I call Twit country music and yes there are a few who may still sing like the old Country music legends even so it just don’t sound the same anymore to my ears..
My Mom played the guitar, heard all of the best songs, all through my life! Love this!
A great performance of a great song written by one of America's greatest songwriters - John D. Loudermilk.
Brings back bad memories, what should'a, could'a been. Too late now, though the love is still there. Great song and singer.
Amen Labaron26! R.I.P. Ernie and Hank
Great memories from " another place - another time "
One of my fav all-time country hits. Ernest brought us some of the greatest country tunes.
Talk Back Tremlin' Lips was first recorded by Ernest Ashworth in 1963, that October it was a #1 hit for Ernie and stayed on the charts for 35 weeks.. BTW if you can find a recording with Ernest Ashworth it will be the original cut. He told Roy Acuff he thought Ernie Ashworth was better to say on the air.from then on he was Ernie..He Joined the Opry in March 1964. In 1964 Johnny Tillotson recorded it & was last top ten in the USA that year.John D Laudermilk wrote this & many great hits.
A really great song and singer!!!
Good times from childhood!!
we have several great losses in the country field. this is 1 of them.
Me and Ernie and Betty were good friends and they loved each other and I think after Ms.Betty passed away Ernie couldn't handle it without Betty and I'm sure he was depressed over losing her.also after Ernie passed away there son Mark passed away.Rip Betty and Ernie and Mark

That's such a sad sad story, but Thank you for sharing. I'm certain they're all together singing. I'm 44 now, but when I was a little "Lass", I couldn't, for the life of me understand what he was singing. I'm a night owl, so one late late night, or early early morning, they were playing one of those album/C.D. music compilation commercials with my much older Husband. He grew up on country like me, and they played this song. So now, I finally got to Google this artist and get the lyrics. I have to admit, I like this song, although I turned into a rock & roller. If it's noise with a melody, I'm all for it! Take care of yourself!
Great country classic 2018 👍
RIP, John D. Loudermilk.
song reminds me of chasing wild horse herds, all in my 62 impala hardtop. On the plains of the Navajo reservation, the dust and the laughter. Music blaring, cuz their ain't nobody else around for miles. Memories of my youth back in 98.
Real classic country!

Got to play a show in Bristol, Tn. birthplace of country music with Ernie 40 years ago, Tommy Rose the resident Opry piano player and myself on the drums, he had the suit with the sequined lips, my claim to fame, time of my life. Still have a picture somewhere. Love ya' Ernie.
Alabama Boy ! Born and raised in Alabama! Great job Ernest ! RIP !!!!

Glad to be able to hear this along with all the other great singers .seems like they are forgotten for stuff that dont make sense.peace
I used to blast this song at work back in the day. Co-workers hated it. RIP Ernie.
Too many memories
I remember Ernie had a theatre in Pigeon Forge, TN in 1978. That was back when there was actually space between Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. The theme park was known as "Silver Dollar City" before Dolly bought it and changed the name to "Dollywood". Whew - where did the time go? Thanks for posting Alan!! Nice,
I like this version better than the Johnny Tillotson version. Good schtuff, back when country was Country, and not crossover....
