Lyrics: Last night I went to sleep in Detroit City I dreamed about them cotton fields of home I dreamed about my mother, dear old pappy, sister and brother And I dreamed about the girl who's been waitin' for so long I want to go home I want to go home Oh, how I want to go home Home folks think I'm big in Detroit City From the letters that I write they think I'm just fine, yes they do But by day I make the cars and by night I make the bars If only they could read between the lines ‘cause you know I rode a freight train north to Detroit City And after all these years I find I've just been wastin' my time You know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna take my foolish pride Get it on a southbound freight and let it ride I'm gonna go back to the loved ones The ones I left waiting so far behind I want to go home, yeah I want to go home Oh, how I want to go home (Can't you hear me?) I want to go home Whoa, baby I want to go home Oh, how I want to go home (Somebody help me) I want to go home, yeah I want to go home, whoa oh Oh, how I want to go home Hmm, I want to go home...

Ya know, I could sing this and Five Hundred Miles backwards. Every yr on my daddy's birthday I go to the cemetary about a block from.my Apt. and I listen to this with my daddy. Some might think it's morbid of me but I've been doing it since he passed in 2006 and I'll do it until I join him , mama and brother in Heaven

I made it out, I was medevacked out in April of 70 to Japan. Home is where I'm still living at 70 years old I'm still in Cincy and gawd I still listen to this song.

@TheJanka51 I would say that it was still pretty good into the 90s, after which it became unrecognizable garbage! But yes, the late 60s, 70s and early 80s were the BEST years of country music. Merle Haggard, Glen Campbell, Billie Jo Spears, ....and I could go on and on and on.

Hard to believe that it was 1964. I still whistle this song every now and then. Bobby Bare was very laid back and easy to listen to. There is a part early in this video where he appears to be having trouble with the key up and the accompanist beside him shows him his guitar. Bobby gave a shy grin and mouthed "thank you." Then continued playing in the next higher key.

NO, NO, NO! That transition from E to the key of B for the second verse and refrain is HIS!!! He did not need help finding it, he owns it! This is certainly probably the best version, but listen to Solomon Burke do it for the true feel of a man from the south who went north and ended up by "day making the cars and by night making the bars....."

I was sent by Bob Dylan too. Strange song and great bass line. The singer seems to be some kind of " happy sad." . Wonderful vision of what can´t work.

A friend & I were seniors when a married couple took us to the Louisiana Hayride. I told my friend to follow me…and we went in the dressing room he & Lefty shared..we asked for their autograph when this was popular. How I wish I had kept that!
