Dude! This is like a book tube celeb to me
Mike and Merphy are great. And seem very genuine. I stopped with book tubers when they seemed bought and paid for. For instance when the wheel of time adaptation came out and a certain KZreadr couldn’t say anything but good about it. So I left their channel. What I appreciate about Mike is he is honest. He tried to love it. But eventually came to terms with what the adaptation really was. He will always have my respect even if I don’t agree with him. Love you both!
You both read WoT around the same time as me, and you were both instrumental in me enjoying the series so much. Lit a fire for me to read fantasy/sci-fi for the last few years.

This was an excellent discussion haha you guys are both very laid back and curious, makes for great conversation
oh Mike and Merphy, this was so good! Thank you both for talking so long and talking so much. We love your content and are so thankful for you both!
Mike, I think you’re worrying too much about the numbers. I feel it’s more important to have a strong community of real followers rather than “large” community spread thin. I enjoy your content and just realized I haven’t subscribed yet, I just fixed that. Bless you and make the type of content you enjoy and are proud of.

Another fantastic livestream, Mike! Can't express how much I love your channel, I have been watching every video since 2020 :) You made my TBR a "bit" longer
This was awesome. You two are the first channels I discovered and got me back into reading. You both have given me some great recommendations. Keep up the good work 😊
Thanks for this! What a really enjoyable and genuine conversation. The two of you just seem like cool people to hang out with.
Amazing collab! Thanks for making this guys!
This is such a great conversation!
Yea! This stream made my weekend! Two of my top 5 KZreadrs! AND Phillip in chat? Holy crap! 🙂
Enjoyed the replay of the stream. Merphy was a really engaging and charismatic guest.
I’m quite late to this video but loved hearing you chat w Merphy. Keep up the great work Mike! Love the channel!
I like the sips of coffee in the videos. It makes it feel more like a real conversation.
This is awesome, you too are my favorite Booktubers
Such a great discussion. Sorry I wasn't there live with you. I had an idea once to become a voice actor. I thought about moving to Houston to try to get on at ADV when they were doing all those anime dubs.
Reviews are my favorite types of videos. It's like a book club to me, seeing if I feel the same about a book as someone else.

This was a great conversation, but Mike - it's disheartening when you harp too much on channel growth. Your subs aren't going down, and you have nearly 90k people who enjoy your content. Don't get in the habit of linking your happiness to sub numbers, because you'll end up chasing down fads and getting viewers who don't like the stuff you actually enjoy reading, then it won't be fun for YOU anymore. Keep up the great work, Mike!

Don’t quit Mike! Please!
Wheel of Time is my favourite fantasy series of all time, but avoided re-reading it for years (spot read specific favourite scenes only), because of the “life is short, too many other things to read” mindset. However I began a full reread in the last year following the release of the tv show, and am thoroughly enjoying it. It’s such a long series that there are so many great things that I’d just forgotten, and it was fascinating retracing the journey of the characters knowing where they would end up at the finale
Awesome! Love how you have such different opinions, made a great chat 1:53:37

Two of my favourite booktubers
You mentioned not liking some nautical books at around 28:38. You may enjoy the non-fiction book "Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Journey" by Alfred Lansing first published in 1959. I read it in February after hearing about it on another channel and loved it! About Ernest Shackleton's 1915 voyage to the Antarctic and all that went wrong. A fast read, and I couldn't wait to get back to the book every time I put it down. His ship was named Endurance, but it's an amazing story of human endurance as well.

I loved Janny Wurtz Empire Trilogy when I was younger. They are companion books to Raymond E Feist Midkemia books.
Funny you bring up that the two of you have differing opinions on books, You are the two channels I watched if you both have reviews on a book for the differt perspectives 😂 Worked well for me I've found books I love from both your channels.
I also don't usually read YA anymore. One middle grade trilogy I read when I got back into fantasy that was really, really good was Bartimäus by Jonathan Stroud. He took a risk with a antihero main character that had an incredible arc. It's really funny, sometimes in a twisted way. I think it could be something to read with your kid when you want to go shade darker and morally grey than Harry Potter. Would like to reread that one sometime. Another that's on my list that I'm really excited for is Abhorsen by Garth nix.
WHAAAAAT This is so cool!
Nice discussion Mike and Merphy.

Loved this talk. When you brought up YA and middle grade I thought of Here There Be Dragons, there's a fantastic twist at the end of the book. Murphy DNF'd the book before getting there. I know she's a Peter Pan fan and the second book has a cool tie in.

It's a pretty big rabbit hole.
Everyone loves Sanderson. I'm struggling to get into it. I'm two books into the mistborn trilogy, and I don't know if I can pick up the next book. It feels like work because I don't get into that book hipnoses where you forget you're reading. I picked up Abercrombie now, am two books in and can't wait for the next one.
@Yesica1993

Mistborn didn't do it for me either. (I was also distracted at that time due to Real Life stuff, so I may be willing to give it another shot at some point.) The Way of Kings did have that immersive/movie-like feel to it. But that's as far as I've gotten in the series. I had no idea when I first read it that it was going to be so long. I'm going to have to wait until it's done. I'm not taking the chance on getting attached to a long series and then have it never be finished for whatever reason!
Fun video 😍
Mike, U R not the only KZreadr who has noticed a recent negative change in the algorithm. I have seen multiple creators with videos on the subject. KZread changed something. Wish I could remember who had the best vid explaining it. Try a search?
If you like stories about vikings try Brian Wood’s Northlanders series published by Vertigo!
My 2 cents on the topic or reviews: reading a book is a time investment. Not everybody has the time to read many books so we do rely on reviews to help us choose. If all reviews are positive, then the viewers will stop watching them all together because they already know what you'll say (that it's nice, you should read it, etc). That's why "top 10 books" work so well, because they show you some type of "real" reading suggestions. Now I don't support "hate" videos - but there is space there for giving negative reviews without being dismissive or offensive.
Love both your channels and your reviews especially. You should check out Bartimaeus by Jonathan Stroud for your kids Mike. The positive comments surprise me and I'm surprised by what videos do well. Sadly, I obsess over the negative comments, but I've only gotten a handful of them. The most recent said I have nothing to say and like a lot of people I supposedly like attention. I'm not motivated enough to write a book, but I wanted to. I still want to sometimes. I think writing fanfiction threw me off, because I didn't have to create world or characters. It made me lazy.
My favorites are the book reviews.
To help make sense of the Cowboy Bebop name its Bebop as in the style of Jazz. Jazz is a big motif throughout the whole show and I do think you'd really like it Mike its even pretty short at only 26 episodes and a movie
Mike really does have the voice for storytelling.
I looooooooove video essays
THANK YOU MERPHY! I totally agree about Cradle, it's just not for me. I've read the first ten, and still can't see the hype.
Murakami’s 1Q84 is extraordinary
Reason that Mike gets more aggresive comments is that Merphy has better hair than Mike....
I'm sure Cowboy Bebop would be for you Mike. If you ever do it, the anime is the way to go though, since the manga is adapted from the anime in that specific case. I totally get why you wouldn't want to read One Piece though. It's a great series, but I agree it might not be for you. Shingeki no Kyojin, Fullmetal Alchemist and Claymore are definitely the way to go for you to check out shonen manga, so I'm glad those are in your radar.
You might dig Jujutsu Kaisen or Naruto. 2 Manga series I read and enjoyed a lot . Might be your style

Fantastic live stream. I'm so glad people are still doing this kind of thing in the age of TikTok. I'd never heard of Janny Wurts before but evidently she's teamed up with the legendary Raymond E. Feist to write a trilogy. Probably my favorite fantasy writers these days who doesn't seem to get the attention she deserves is on KZread is N.K. Jemisin.

Hi Mike I think why Onepiece/ manga fans can be a bit intense is because it has a higher demographic of younger audiences which may contribute to audience’s who are unable to understand and accept difference in opinions and perspectives.
@berserker8884
Жыл бұрын
I get your reasoning, but I don't think that is it specifically. If you were part of the fandom since early 2010s, you would understand that OP was a huge underdog in the west for the LONGEST time. Those of us who enjoyed it usually had it as one of our favorite stories, but it was always lumped together with other Shounen in a pejorative way. So the fandom has always been abnormally passionate and intense for those reasons. It has only been the last 5 years that the series has completely exploded in the west! And because it is one of the best fantasy stories ever written, people still get very frustrated and feel like it gets overlooked, just because it is a manga and because it has "silly" art style.
52:40 You don't need to be good at games to stream them. Being able to interact with chat and be entertaining at it is a different matter. If you're at like the top 0,01% of a big multiplayer game skill-wise you can get by with just that and mostly ignore chat.
"Mike will LOVE that book, because I hate it!"
I don’t think you’d like Murakami, Mike.
I actually think their have been a lot of fantastic American comics in the last few years. The Dreaming: Waking Hours by G. Willow Wilson Donny Cates Thor run Future State: The Next Batman by John Ridley Haha by W. Maxwell Prince I Breathed a Body by Zac Thompson I just think the culture wars surrounding comics has kind of overshadowed the good stuff.

i agree with merphy on Fitz i gave up on half of a Assassins aprentice boring characters, difficul to read through prose, zero action, not very interesting set up
Read / watch some one punch man guys. Sooo good!!!
1:53:00 trueeeee, i hate flashbacks in my books. I mean, i don't hate them like insanely, one or 2 flashbacks are fine, but if there's a flashback almost in the entirety of the book? o hell nah. That's why i didn't gave The way of kings by Sanderson a 10/10 because the flashbacks annoyed me, even tho one or 2 were good. But i don't want to see them....
Don’t take it personally, Mike. I dislike Shorts no matter whose face shows up.
mike you should read hunter x hunter, merphy read it and she liked it as much as one piece...I think.

Brandon Sanderson is hellbent into live action series and live action movies, so we will NEVER see an animated Cosmere novel. I agree when we see spren on a live action people are gonna laugh their asses of and it will fail, sorry I love the cosmere but we have to be realistic here. The Cosmere movie/series franchise will never make it with only the core Brandon Sanderson fans.
