Taking care of baby Blue Jays | Week 1 | Raising baby birds

Ойын-сауық

This was week 1 of taking care of our baby blue jays. They grow incredibly fast and are really cute to watch haha. They do take quite a bit of our time to take care of, but it's worth it for the time we get with them.

For anyone who does not know, DO NOT immediately pick up a baby bird if you see one. First, try to determine which stage it is at. Many fledgling birds spend time hopping around the ground before it's time for them to fly. It's natural and you should not touch them. The parents are watching and will take care of them. If there are predators around (like cats) you can try moving them to a safer place nearby like a bush, just don't go so far away that the parents might not be able to find them. If the babies have little to no feathers, they definitely aren't meant to be on the ground and you should look for their nest (it will probably be in a nearby tree or shrub) and place them back in it. Very rarely do you need to take baby birds inside and care for them yourself. I don't think the maker of this video did anything wrong, but I do want to raise awareness for other people watching that our good intentions aren't necessarily what's right for the bird. Bottom line, before you decide to impulsively adopt a baby bird, do some research and make sure you aren't accidentally interfering with nature in a harmful way.

Found a baby bird in the road. Younger than these, no feathers on head, face, throat, chest, belly, under wings or legs. It was hopping up and down because the asphalt was hot and burning it’s feet. No trees nearby, no parents. Rats. Had to take him home. First day it wouldn’t eat so I mixed cat food gravy with water and forced in a few drops at a time. Second day he started opening his beak but he shook so hard I missed mostly but bit by bit I figured out what to do. Turned out to be a male Cardinal. Trained him to find food for release and released him numerous times but he kept coming back to us. Finally decided he could stay and we had a huge cage in our large sunroom and each morning the cage was opened so he could come and go as he liked. So intelligent. Sadly somebody reported me and he was confiscated by the State of Florida Wildlife Commission. About to publish a book, titled ROSCOE: My CARDINAL Sin.

Share this video with friends every time you notice baby birds around April and May in my area, someone could be desperately searching for what to do. This video is really helpful. 👍 I’m going to share it now with my 700 friends on Facebook and on my 50 friends on Instagram if I can figure out how to share on that app. Many thanks to this young lady who knew it may help. 🙏🙏🙏

We found a baby Blue Jay outside our back door this morning after a series of thunderstorms last night. Fed it some small earthworms and we put it up in the crook of the big Oak tree it had fallen under, and right now it's waiting for it's mother. I hope she comes. We have a number of them in our yard.

You can use dog food or or cat food. Soak in water and express some of the water out with a napkin so they accidentally inhale it to the lungs. No need to give them water through the dropper. The water in the moistened food is be enough.

What a learning experience. ❤️ I see where I went wrong. Sadly mine only made it through day 3. Mine aspirated probably and passed of pneumonia. 😭 It’s very, very important that you feed your bird food with the right consistency of liquid. My food was too watery. I looked up videos and called a wildlife person and Vet but not one told me about the consistency of the food, that it should be soft but solid. No one told me about the one drop of water to the back of the throat. Mine was injured, caught by a cat but I saved him in time I feel. I think it was the consistency of the food that caused his death. So friends be careful about how you feed them, plus how often and that does take constant attention as well as you see. I read one article and it said you do feed them through the night, I thought that was odd, since birds don’t gather food at night. So I would like for the young lady to verify whether she fed them through the night as that may be important or not necessary. This is by far the best video for those of you in this position of raising a poor defenseless little one. I hope I help you NOT make the mistakes I did and you have a lovely bird experience. Can’t wait to see her next weeks video and the next so I can see them thrive. Don’t forget the consistency of the food in number 1 and that drop of water is number 2 and finally the 1/1/2 to 2 hour intervals is 3. You must do them all to save a baby bird. They also poop on you so have your napkins ready. I would figure the poop right after eating mostly. So happy the little one did not poop on the young ladies head while playing the piano. 😁🥰🥰

Awww, we all make mistakes and learn, don’t ever think it was all your fault, you gave that baby bird a real fighting chance and gave him some love before he passed 🥹🥰🥰 I currently have a baby blue jay I’m taking care of (day 4!!) and I do not feed them at night as they sleep throughout most of the night. I usually feed every 2 hours so before bedtime I feed him every hour for the last two hours if that makes sense. So I know he’ll have enough energy to survive the night 💖

Cat bites are nasty and deadly to any small animal so if it had a wound or scratch of some kind, that easily could’ve caused a deadly infection too unfortunately. Even for humans, it’s recommended to go to a doctor after a cat bite to get antibiotics

I have found success using jar baby food Apricot, mixed with Baby rice cereal until it's a thin paste. I've used this on hatchlings that have fallen out of the nest at only a few days old and while not all saves are successful, most are.

You are a sweet young lady. I hope much success with raising the little one's perhapps the littlest one will live. You may have to keep it in captivity because of it's injuries. It is posible to keep bluejays in captivity they live a long time. 29 years. But rare in the wild. Interestingly there feathers do not have a blue pigment they absorb all light and reflect only the blue various colors. Bluesjay are in the corvid family of birds crows magpies Ravens and such around the world they're about as smart as 7-year-old human beings. Take care. Dwight.

I have had two blue birds that keep trying to make a nest in my mailbox so I moved the nest to one of my bird houses and the parents never came. They also had three eggs in their nest that i moved and one broke. I now have two blue bird eggs in my house in a box with a washcloth around them that mimics a nest and a retile heating lamp above them. What should I do to help them grow better when they hatch?

Did you just mix the raw egg yoke with the dog food or did you cook it? If you did cook it how much and in which way? Wanna take good care of this little guy ❤ Thanks so much!

Never give babies straight water… Give them canned dog food dog food soften with a little bit of grape juice. Never feed directly into their mouth you always feed to the side because they’re breathing tube is directly in the middle . Baby birds get all the moisture and liquid they need from the food.

As a wildlife rehabber, please don't take baby birds unless you have actively monitored them for several hrs and made sure the parents aren't around feeding them. Those babies will open their mouth when approached as an instinct, not because they are "starving" but because it's an instinct. At that age they live on the ground, their parents feed them throughout the day, they learn to find food and how to fly. Please don't take them inside.
