I just found one tonight wondering around the yard. A dead one the same size near by. I brought him in. I’ll be feeding him. I have cats though so I’m nervous about it. I have a lot of blue jays around that I feed so I’m hoping I can get this little guy safely to adulthood somehow

My cat brought me a baby blue jay in the middle of the night last night! Not exactly what I wanted to see at 6am, but we've had a fairly successful day of it. Feeding every 30 minutes or so. Glad to see your video, there may be hope of avoiding the long trip to the bird rehab center. (This is the second live, unharmed bird my cat has brought into the house. I guess he's more of a collector than a killer, I hope.)

Years ago I tried to save a baby blue Jay (we named him Blue Jay Leno) and a dove (Dove Letterman) but was unsuccessful. A few years ago I found a VERY YOUNG male Cardinal I named Roscoe. This brought back all the memories of struggling to feed him. Happily I was able to save him and he grew into the most amazing bird. I released him many times but he always returned and wanted to come back to his home in our sunroom where he had a huge cage that was always open so he had complete run of the room. He actually housebroke himself and would fly into the cage to relieve himself. But somebody reported me and he was confiscated by the Florida Wildlife Commission. I am about to publish a book titled ROSCOE: My CARDINAL Sin

i came across this and it depressed me. We had a big storm one day and I accidentally stepped on a baby while its siblings screamed. I was so upset and I'll never forget every detail. I took rest of the babies back to my apartment in box and fed them while I prepared to build them a new nest. I got them back into a tree and mama came back to it after about a day. I kept an eye on them until they left the nest. I actually got to see both of them leave the nest and I was so proud.

I made it a nest watched an instructional video on baby Jay care but it was too late, I noticed the baby fell asleep and thought it would be ok. I'm feeding him with a puree of beans, eggs, potato, corn meal, chiken meat or ham, carrots, toasted peanuts and wathever I had at home and see that he liked. Also some fruits pieces and water. I'm washing his butt, beak, face and dirty body parts, taking him outside to get some sun light and exercises his wings. He looks nice and healty. You did a good job at narrating the progress. The feeding in the beginning was a tad hard to watch but it was a baby and all babies have the tendency to be complicated at times. The transition from natural feeding to human feeding a wild animal is different I'm sure. I give ya a 9.5 out of 10 for effort. You did your due diligence on keeping him fed safe and gave him a chance to grow. Is there any updates on Billy or was this it for your story.

Rescued a fledgling from 3 cats; 1 dropped it out its mouth while, 2 bystanders watched. Unfortunately, the day before, I found dead what I think was mom or dad and 2 days after finding this one, found dead, what looked like its sibling. Think they both tried leaving the nest, going after food when mom didn’t not return. I looked for a nest when I first found him, to no avail. No rescue rehabs in the area or any licensed place would help, so I have been caring for this sweet thing for 8 days now. Trying to take it outside a lot and research how and when to release it back outside. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve got a baby jay who is eating well. Found after dark last night on the ground. First I gave it a chick mixture of electrolytes and probiotics made it a nest covered it in chicken feathers and this morning it listened to this video and ate some suet cake mixed with canned cat food via an eye dropper. Today I will try to get the other jays involved by putting its cage out. Had great success last week with a nestling of gnat catcher( I’m drawing a blank on the species) that was attacked by a Blue Jay and knocked from its nest. Ironic that now I found this little one in need of assistance

Hi we found a nest after the landscaper cut stuff down. The tree was way to open. I realized it once one of the small eggs hatched. So pretty the bird. I covered the tree with something so the baby had shade( its been so hot in fl the baby bird want moving much) then the mama bird i think came bc it went and checked on the baby bird after i did that. Is it true they will move the baby bird to another nest. I ask bc all of them disappeared after they hatched. I got lucky to see the first baby bird. Idk if its a dove or bluejay bc the bluejays always flying and checking on the nest bwfore they were harched. Then another kind of bird i think is a dove came to it. Ty for showing about the heat. Idk that just felt like the baby bird needed some shade sense the tree was now open where its not well protected. Do u see the bluejays still? Does he visit u. I know that mught seem silly but we have so many beautiful birds here after they hatch we see them a year or more later to hatch another set of birds 😆 didnt mean to make this long. Have a wonderful great blessed day (hagwbd) 😊

geta grip A Bluejay won’t be able to survive in a cage. It needs to learn to forage and eventually to fly. Just as in my video, see if you can get other adult Blue Jays interested in it. Take it outside where are other Blue Jays are, and supervise the baby so the cats can’t get it. Probably where you found it would be best. Good luck.

There didn’t seem to be any other blue jays around and I wanted to make sure he wasn’t injured from the fall impact and that he’d get fed. So I took him in, fed him some cat food, went back outside and still no other blue jays that would come to him :( I kept him in over night just to make sure he’d be safe from any neighborhood stray cats. What should I do if no other blue jays are coming to this baby? Just leave him outside? I’m scared he’ll grow hungry or other animals will get to him first. Please let me know! Thank you

Dunno if you'll see this. Sadly, we lost a baby scrub jay this AM. We'd had her for 8 days. She'd fallen out of her nest, was younger than Billy Boy. My son found the general area where the nest was, but we couldn't get to it. We could hear 2 babies in it. So sad. My parent's dog had found her. We finally gave up at dusk and brought her home, as she wouldn't have survived. Plus, their dog... We fed her grub worms. We fed her food for Scrub Jay's (by grinding it up and adding water). I later realized that the shell of the seeds had been ground up too, so I tried picking them out. I noticed that you fed your baby significantly less. SIGNIFICANTLY. I also gave her wet cat food. For the last few days I was ONLY feeding her this. I had read that everytime they open their mouth you feed them. I was also giving her water in syringes. I gave her alot, thinking she HAD to drink. She had diarrhea all last night. I gave her a warm bath with my shampoo, because poop had gotten stuck on her. I kept her warm afterward. We've been using a heat lamp at night. She was starting to hop, so last night I kept her in bed with me, then put her back by the hotlamp.. Normally we kept her in a container that she could not get out of. This time I purposely put her in a short wide basket. I wanted to give her the freedom to get to hop around. Looked for her this AM. Finally found her under a side table, deceased. Am devastated. I really want to know what things we messed up on. If you see this, would you mind giving me your thoughts? I'd be very grateful. Her name waa Blueberry.

You don’t give them water. They get all the water they need from blueberry’s, crickets, worms, and various other insects. If you do give them water it’s only a drop or two max. They can drown if given too much water sadly which is a common cause of death for first time rescues. It’s our first instinct as humans to give things food and water, but fledglings do not need it because of their diet. You also have to be careful giving them moist cat food thats soaked in water because if it’s too damp that can also drown them as well.

@@floydwebtube not gonna to tell her the truth? She said she forced a syringe of water down its mouth, to the point it had diarrhea. That would kill a fledgling… incompetence to not at least warn people so they know not to do it again. These young birds do not drink any water for the first 3-4 weeks of their lives except in only rare medical exceptions a couple drops or so. People need to research these simple things before they do more harm than good. No excuse when you can just Google it in a couple seconds.
