Taking a Hit with Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ricky Williams & Dr. Staci Gruber

Ғылым және технология

How are attitudes toward cannabis changing? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly discuss the future of marijuana and its effects on mental health with former football player turned cannabis professional, Ricky Williams, and Harvard Medical School and director of the MIND Program, Dr. Staci Gruber.
We explore the failed drug tests that lead to Ricky’s early departure from the NFL after winning the Heisman Trophy. Was Ricky actually ahead of his time? We learn about shifting attitudes toward marijuana and the athlete push for cannabis. We also discuss Sha’Carri Richardson and Brittney Griner, the need for more progress, and how weed’s dark history of racism needs to be examined. What is the current stance on players failing tests?
How does it help with pain management? Mental health? Learn where Ricky has taken his career, his companies Highsman and Real Wellness, and where he finds purpose. Is getting high always a negative thing? Why do so many look to the cosmos while engaging with marijuana? Discover Maxwell’s demon, blippies, and blerds.
To end, we get into the science from Staci. Is it true that cannabis makes you less motivated? Or is that just a stereotype? What’s it like in countries where weed is legal? We explore amotivational syndrome, terpenes, “couch lock,” and famous potheads. Was Carl Sagan a heavy pot user? Discover the endocannabinoid system in the body, neurotransmitters and receptors, and how cannabis hijacks them.

I found this fascinating. I had a negative experience smoking pot overall...certainly not for the first few years...but eventually. I also have friends that still enjoy it, and even helps them socialise. I think the drug triggers off your natural personality. Some will enjoy it and will never experience the negative side...others, like myself, were not meant for the drug. It eventually made me paranoid, socially awkward, and inward looking. I wish otherwise...and do not look down upon others that smoke.

Once again, thanks to Neil's podcasts I feel less lonely and less of a freak having such a famously brilliant mind confirming things that I've been contemplating and advocating for years. From cosmology to sociology and all its derivatives in the human condition are made infinitely more interesting and much easier to get a grasp of thanks not only to the coherent and cohesive use of laymen's terms as far as is possible, but also the enthusiasm to explain and make complexed matters interesting as well as comprehensible shines through. And on the topic of cannabis,, I will say that eventually, when all the back peddling on the prohibition of cannabis has passed and we've caught up to where we should be on the beneficial factors and uses of it, it'll be part of a cancer beating miracle. I've already heard quite a few anecdotes of skin and stomach cancer cured by consumption (eating and drinking, not smoking) and application of, for lack of a better term, weed cream. A good subject for a future talk might be the beneficial uses of LSD, such as as an antidepressant, a cure for drug dependency and other addictions, and I would like to suggest a study, if it hasn't been done already, on the effects of LSD on migraine headaches and, as in my case cluster migraine headaches (a lifelong sufferer, 3 years ago I took a 3grm dose of magic mushrooms, and haven't had a single attack since). A quick review of the whys and where fors of president Nixon's cannabis and LSD prohibition wouldn't go a miss either. Although it is absolutely true and, if I'm not mistaken, a proven fact by now how drugs and especially hard drugs have been used and deliberately so by the USA criminal establishments in the dark backrooms of power to suppress the Afro-American population into drug den riddled ghettos and alcoholic drug dependent broken families leaving little more than pimps and pushers as role doles to a life behind bars, there are also more profound issues of how the mindset of society as a whole would change (Hale the end of the immorally rich white supremacy elitist class). And if we take a moment to contemplate where we could've gotten to by now as a society had these two substances not been outlawed.... food for thought.

I absolutely approve of StarTalk - Weed Edition! 😉 ~THC This is an awesome show. It is soooo wonderful to see someone who takes representing cannabis as seriously as I do! 💖 I think that Superspikes of stress and the effects on the endocannabinoid system needs to be studied. What of: ...Superspikes of stress during sustained high stress situations? ...A superspike in stress into an otherwise peaceful situation? Stress can be very mild or very traumatic. While it is known to affect the endocannabinoid levels, the studies don't seem to be related to studying the various levels of stress. What is the difference of a one-time trauma superspike, versus a sustained stress of ongoing bullying? I suspect that stress's affect on the output of cannabinoids is the driver behind the use of cannabis... It is used as a cannabinoid corrector, leveling out the (permanent or temporary) damage done by stress. ~THC

@@dave131269 I agree... Positive forms of stress should also be considered. So, an example might be of someone who runs for enjoyment or likes to ride rollercoasters... How does cannabis affect them in their euphoria? I know it actually isn't what I seek after a natural high that is achieved after having experienced positive stress. It brings me down out of that euphoria. But this is exactly what I seek when I use cannabis after getting settled in my hotel after a long flight... Something to bring me back down to earth faster... Not necessarily negative stress, though. So... Maybe it somewhat neutralizes most stress? Which could be good for some people on a competitive level... But bad for others. And, in speculation, if that were the case would it not enhance some athletes while actually disabling others? 🤔🤔🤔

Really appreciate that StarTalk is talking about the science around cannabis. Would love if y'all could bring on some of the politicians who claim they 'aren't sure the science is there yet', like our President, or my own district's Rep who recently called marijuana a narcotic, and have the honest discussion with them about where the science actually is. It's absolutely unacceptable that cannabis is still considered a Schedule I drug, in my opinion. I have depression and anxiety issues that the prescription drugs don't help at all, and also have several side effects that suck. So instead, I smoke a bit of weed. It helps to calm down my mind and allows me to relax, it improves my mood a bit so I just overall feel a bit happier, it helps with my lack of an appetite, it also can help to ease my nausea slightly.. The last thing I'd mention that it's helped me with - is sleeping. I usually only take a few puffs here and there throughout the day - but if I'm having trouble sleeping I just puff a bit extra and I'm ready for a nap. Helps me with all of that, and has none of the nasty side effects that the regular prescription drugs do. To be completely fair - I'd say the fact that I smoke my weed is surely unhealthy for my lungs and coughing can suck. I would also say that the last bit - smoking a bit extra to get sleepy - could be seen as a downside as well. If you smoke too much, it could make you sleepy, and sometimes it's preferable to be awake - but that's exactly why I say moderation is important and why I consider the way that I consume cannabis to be medicinal. Anyways, if I was able to experiment on myself and determine what ways it can be used medicinally - surely others can, and that should be proof that cannabis should be de-scheduled, as it most certainly has medical uses. So while I appreciate educating the public, it's politicians who really seem most ignorant and in need of an education on this topic - so I would really loveeee for StarTalk to be able to shed some light on and bring attention to the science for our politicians.

It is crazy to think how acceptance has changed since the early 2000s. I had zero experience with cannabis until I went to college in 2006 and it was everywhere. I had no way to deal with it other than to say “no”: I just knew it carried consequences. But that didn’t stop me for long, it was just so prevalent around me and I kept meeting people I respected that I found out smoked weed. It sucked that I had to hide my own use and opinions around my more conservative family; the secrets were so painful. I didn’t necessarily have healthy use patterns with weed; I really hope one day we learn as a society to use it in a healthy way, and just more generally learn a healthier way of living together in this world. People shouldn’t be punished for being unhappy and wanting to feel better.

Deep breathing--yes, air in the lungs--and CBD counteract all negative THC side-effects, like paranoia, delusional thinking, and auditory hallucinations. Deep breathing is the best and easiest stress relief tool you can find. After a bout of laughter, which is hyperventilation, which can induce stress, we naturally take a few deep breaths and feel fine.

In currently fully disabled from MS and the side show of how my brain doesn't work quite right as of ten years ago. Dementia is creeping in according to my neurologist as well. With that said, I've spoke with my neurologist about weed for pain mitigation and MS symptoms. A year or two ago he spoke the pro points for over a half hour. Now, he's very vanilla on the subject. I was on very strong pain relievers that helped. But I know are not the road that I want to travel. Shows like this give hope that better days may come. Thanks again.

My opinion on CBD only medical products is that it's big pharma wedging in the legislations to centralize the means of production into big companies who need machines, permits and such to produce. I personally have gained a lot of mental health benefits from the THC side of cannabis. CBD flower helps with physical pain, but it is not helping for the mental side of things. Each variety has different properties, and it is a combination of all the cannabinoids and their respective ratios that produces different effects per variety. It's great to have the option to have CBD only products, but we also need THC to be accepted in the medical side of the debate.

btw time isn't real, it's a hallucination of human consciousness. It ignores internal tickrate of consciousness and manifestation, be it humans or plants or anything alive, it ignores relativity in space, because you can not define time without a frame of reference, same thing with speed really. Anyway time is a cognitive bias, what really exists isn't a timeline of past, present and future. What really exists is a permanent transformation driven by an imbalance caused by entropy. Some galaxies have positive quantum spin, but some galaxies have negative quantum spin, which drives entropy backwards. Entropy is a fractal of spacetime unfolding, which is relative to what is interacting with spacetime, and entropic charge can go one way or the other based on quantum spin. As well as being anywhere on the spectrum of this positive or negative charge, just like ionization and heat and magnetism. Entropy follows logic and sacred geometry observing the chaos theory and relativity and conservation of energy. Humans are too boxed in their Earthly and mortal experiences and fail to grasp the real infinity of scales in the universe. Weed, among other substances, gives a different perspective on that. Do you know how mushrooms communicate elaborately with their surroundings using micro electrical impulses? Well there is something real in there, that combines when we take psychotropic and psychedelic substances, which opens cognitive awareness to new perspectives on the cosmos and physics in general.

One thing I think I've come to understand is that sativa and indica based flower can help a person depending on their natural energy levels. I've noticed that someone with low energy levels (such as myself) benefits from a sativa because it can help to increase that energy level, but if you give a sativa to a high energy person... they bounce off the walls like they just drank a gallon of coffee. Indica is the same in reverse. If I smoke an indica all I want to do all day is sleep, which drives me nuts because I don't want to sleep my life away, where a high level person it brings their energy to a balanced level where they feel they can function better. Just an observation I've noticed that I don't know is being considered during studies.

I’m a sensitive person and growing up was a brutal and hurtful experience that I learned I had to be tough and thick skinned. That wasn’t me either though and I learned later on in life that the sensitive qualities are what made me happier. I’ve lived in multiple locations around the US and lived in Europe for 2yrs. Living outside of the US changed me forever. I found out what it’s like to live in a country that’s national language was not English. Because I wanted to meet the people and get around and travel I learned how to speak a foreign language the best I could in two years and taking classes. What I have found out is A**holes come in all kinds of colors, nationalities, and backgrounds. I also found that really cool people come in all kinds of colors, nationalities, and backgrounds. There is nothing wrong with cannabis and it has great benefits. The majority of our country (70%+) want marijuana fully legalized, a larger amount wants single payer healthcare like the rest of the developed world has. We need to quit blasting each other over which of the two fascist duopoly republican and democratic parties they are in. They have both contributed in bad laws and the trillions of dollars (mostly spent on military, foreign wars and foreign political interventions. They have bankrupted us. How about all of the non a**holes getting together and get ourselves a party that values human beings and nature and vote the a**holes out of office and get some much better laws, healthcare, education, and housing. Also let’s build a world where war is illegal and work together for our common good.
