Cosmic Queries - Pot Luck with Neil deGrasse Tyson & Dr. Staci Gruber

Ғылым және технология

Are we “wired for weed”? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly weed out the myth from the science behind marijuana with neuroscientist at Harvard Medical School and director of the MIND Program, Dr. Staci Gruber.
How is cannabis used for medical purposes? Learn about the latest research in the neuroscience of cannabis, how to formulate a longitudinal study, and how the different compounds interact with the brain. Find out the story behind the strain “Charlotte’s Web,” and no, it’s not that it makes you see words in spiderwebs. We explore our endocannabinoid receptors and where THC and CBD bind. Were we designed to get high? How is CBD used to assist people recovering from COVID?
We contrast the electrochemistry of the brain versus physical damage. Could CBD help CTE patients? How do you run a human trial on brain trauma? Find out about genetic profiling and how your DNA impacts the effects of THC on the body. Does THC cause psychosis? Is it true you should avoid THC if your family has a history of schizophrenia? Does weed help or hinder muscle recovery?
What are common myths about marijuana? We discover whether “reefer madness” is real and if marijuana really is a gateway drug. Are marijuana dependencies getting worse? What would a hippie from the 60s think of today’s weed? Is there a difference between a biochemical dependence and simply liking something a lot? What’s the difference between Indica and Sativa? How does cannabis impact the developing mind? All that, plus, how many other plants remain underutilized?
Thanks to our Patrons Zero Chill, Matthew Rozak, Matej Michňák, and Gino Colauto for supporting us this week.

What is the research of eating cannabis flower whole without extraction? After a decarb process? Effectively, just decarboxylate the plant material, eat the entire bud, and let the body do the extraction process. Seems more holistic than smoking or extracting. Within the context of severe pain management.

I use it to treat anxiety, insomnia, GERD, pain, and I also use it for weight control, to control cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, to reduce inflammation, nausea, to reduce risk of dementia when I get old, and to protect my cells from the covid variants. I also use it to get high because it's nontoxic and I never get addicted to it. Cannabis combined with medicinal mushrooms and a healthy diet is the ultimate strategy to prevent disease and live longer. There's other plants that have amazing benefits but cannabis just does so much more. I'm doing this in my 30s because I plan to live as long as possible and hopefully receive the treatment to slow or reverse aging if it becomes available in my lifetime, then I'll hopefully be able to keep extending my lifespan and experience the distant future. Doesn't seem extremely likely for this to happen but it's certainly more likely than at any other time in history.

@@UltraK420 Most people don't get addicted to it, but I did. I'm guessing I was using it too much, every other hour I would inhale, and it became difficult to stop when I needed to after seeing it affect my life and relationships with others, in the sense that I couldn't do anything or have fun without being high. The detox wasn't horrible, but I didn't feel mentally well, had quite a bit of irritability, and felt some physical symptoms such as akathisia and diarrhea. It certainly didn't do anything for my high blood pressure and GERD. May I ask how you ingest it and at what frequency?

@@-Ncrypt there's different types of cannabis, indica, sativa, and ruderalis. Then you have hybrid mixes with all three strains. Add the different ways of cannabis use, smoking, eating o topical you have a good understanding there's a possibility you haven't found what works for you... Tho addiction to cannabis is a thing I guess, that's actually not an issue given the addiction to whatever symptoms one my have, as those are far more greater a problem than addiction to a plant without health risk other than addiction.. I'd, try all forms if I were you, don't write it off, cannabis won't destroy your physical health no matter how much you use, sometimes you have to find what works, which is why I grow and advocate, I know what works for me now after decades of trying everything...

My dad grew weed, lots of weed. It wasn't all his, other people paid him to grow theirs. He went to prison a couple times for it but he believed it should be legal and everyone should have access to it, also arrested a few times at demonstrations for legalizing weed in three different provinces. He died in 2003, weed was legalized in 2018 in Canada, it was something he wanted to see himself. I'm gonna smoke a joint in his memory now. RIP Pop.

He talked about a study in australia that said marijuana users were coming to the ER more often for the same effects i had. I stopped eating dairy or taking a lactaid pill and stopped overeating and completely stopped the problem i was having. But the marijuana use continues. Haven't been nauseous in years. The answer to Neil’s question is a resounding yes! In 2016 I rejected what medicine had to offer me for 5 autoimmune and unrelenting pain. I envied the dead and mourned my waking each morning. I live In Idaho and at 58 when I first tried cannabis in form of FECO out of sheer desperation and found it helpful but traveling to Oregon when i was in the middle of an inflammatory event, was a huge challenge. Things like prickly lettuce, and many different herbs used topical have been amazing for me. I believe based on what has finally worked for me that my vagus nerves was damaged during a double mastectomy . Multiple symptoms in next 12 hours suggest something bad happened to my vagus nerve but in 2001 I don’t know that my doctors knew what it was as they never found reason for gaining 26 pounds over night in the hospital going from size 8 pants to size 18, when I was too sick and power vomiting for hours to even eat. Over time inflammatory event on top of inflammatory event gaining 10-30 pounds in a 24 hr period left me at size 28 pants probably 270-280 I tossed scale at 250 size 24 or 3xxx pants. Thanks to a multitude of plant and mushroom experiments starting low going slow and tracking changes. I have learned to manually do what vagus nerve should do with manipulations, vibration, breathing, and many herbs. I am now 140. Size 6 pants. It requires 3-5 hours of physical theories every day and incorporating many things like humming tapping use of heat pads, layering of clothes to maintain body stability. Many adaptogenicgenic, mushrooms, and herbs are absolutely amazing in their support of my body. In 2016 when I gave up on medicine after 15 years of pure torture I was never under a 7 and daily off the pain chart. (My labor without meds is a 7 on my scale). I now have pain free periods most days, and some pain free days. Plants are amazing and I am totally hooked on herbs. Thank gosh for pub med but information on herbs is still very limited. We need a department of natural medicine to help better research, understand and educate the public about herbs and natural medicines and therapies. Thanks for distracting me from pain and encouraging scientific Experimentation over these years.

My version of macrodosing is being in a sober state, like teeth extractions and u can't smoke sober, then maintain high that is bigger then when u had any tolerance and sustain from there. Some people with no tolerance can smoke a lot naturally or some get high faster and there's no way to tell. That being said if u do this, then even the small amounts for let's say the lightweights everyday is their MACRO dose to the self

Dr Stacie is exactly the kind of voice that is needed in the Cannabis industry. She isn’t speaking through feelings like many I see that are pushing for it being legalized. She articulates her studies very well . We need more people like her in the industry rather than the stereotypical “stoner” who we seem to have the majority of trying to be a voice for the legalization.

Unfortunately it is one of the side effects of the meds(levadopa)I need to take to slow the progression of PD. Its basically trading one bad for the other when it comes to utilizing man-made meds. The bright side is seeing people like dr. Staci Gruber helping the world see there are other options that people can take to treat their afflictions with. On a personal note I have committed myself to letting people know how medical cannibus works for me & the evidence of it being used to help others throughout history. The dr was correct on it being used for thousands of years for healing. I know this because if one takes time to research the history and why it was originally made illegal, one will discover it was made by the same people who are throwing our world upside down right now. I have a video saved in my medical cannibus & PD video playlist for ones who want to know the truth. Heres a fun fact though. There is a US government patent for cannibinoid but yet its still federally illegal. I appreciate the info & ty sir/mam! God bless & be safe!

Sometimes a hybrid if my off day sets in. I dont want too much sedation effects (.ie couch lock) but have some pain relief 50/50 hybrid. Hope that helps. If you look at my video listing in PD and cannibus, I have some strain videos I shared or if you want a reliable compedium you can add the leafly app to your cellphone/pc. Not to even mention the savings of millions of dollars no longer arresting, prosecuting, and imprisonments related to it. My mother recently passed away cause of multicentric glioblastoma which our respected Potdoc mentioned. I wish there was more study about such rare aggressive brain cancer and CBD treatment. Even with successful brain surgery, 25 seating of radiation and chemo along with +2 booster radiation and 6 cycles of biological therapy, she was with us just for 7 months after diagnosis and treatment. Hope in future we have cbd treatment available for one in need. Thank you for showering us with knowledge as always. Love Star Talk. Waiting for next episode.

Dr Staci is really impressive with her clarity and deep knowledge. I love to hear that, and she reminds me a bit of Beverly Crusher ;) Also I very much appreciate Neil translating the evil acronyms. Laziness can make a pointless club of those who know, leaving some behind in the darkness which is really unfortunate and frustrating!

The former Denver Broncos/Arizona Cardinals QB Jake Plummer was a huge advocate for little Charlotte here in Colorado. He did many episodes of his podcast Jake's Takes about her and the strain named for her plus the helpfulness for players with CTE. She will live on forever and was really able to ACTUALLY live the last years because of a natural substance!!

Nice topic, listening to it while smoking my hybrid cannaba-dabba-doo-bie. When she first mentioned Charlotte's Web, i initially thought it was just another fancy hip strain name, but when she explained the story behind it.. wow, that was a rollercoaster, so sad to hear that she still passed away, but hopefully it won't be in vain. But yeah, get off the animal testing ASAP.
