This is pretty much the most comprehensive Taiwanese food introduction video that I've watched with lots of great descriptions and history to go with it. Also not the typical western person who hates stinky dofu, I think her German heritage with sauerkraut which is also pickled cabbage. I spent 6 months in Taiwan and had most of these food and loved them. Another great video by DW.

food is a perfect reason to visit Taiwan, (1990-1993 MTC) While we had a few other items on our agenda in 2010, 2014, and 2018 trips, FOOD is always on my mind for Taiwan. Plus it is nice to visit now with a better budget than when I lived there.

I love the friendly people , and the yummy different types of food. Taiwan is the second safe countries in the world.

Tiawan is a great country, and the food reflects that greatness

The veggies in stinky tofu should be called taiwanese style pickled cabbage instead of kimchi. It's totally not the same thing.

Taipei is on my bucket list. I so much want to spend some time in Taipei.

One important thing is missing in this video, the glorious Taiwanese breakfast joints, egg "pancake/crepe", deep fried dough sticks, soybean milk, pork baos, to name a few.

Went to Taipei back in May and loved it! Wish I had more time to explore.

I wish you had also visited the Indigenous Taiwanese culture too. They are Austronesian and are the First Peoples of Taiwan.

As soon as you said Taiwan and food that was enough for us to bump Taiwan right to the top of our bucket list! 😁😍🙌

Many restaurants will have pictures for the menu too, but not all, and if you are having some problem, there is a good chance someone will help you to order, The Lunch Counters have everything out to see so you can point in those places.

Suggest traveling in Winter time from November to January (cheaper accomodation）, but avoid Chinese New year and school holidays)

Traveled to Taiwan many times. Sorry I couldn’t eat the stinky tofu or century eggs. I loved dumpling and Din Tai Fung and beef noodle soup. And I really miss the Taiwan foot massage.

What about braised pork over rice? Nothing is more Taiwanese than a humble bowl of braised pork over rice. Also, she should have gone to Tainan, the capital of Taiwanese food.

The small restaurant out in front of and just to the right and down some stairs from the National Palace Museum has that dish and many other classic Taiwanese dishes. Simple great food, gets overlooked sometimes.

They briefly talked about indigenous Taiwanese and it makes me wonder if their is a type of cuisine that the indigenous people produce that is available to the Han Chinese public? Because in the U.S. and Canada we are currently having it where First Nation cuisine is starting to be recognized.

this is a good question. Usually we Han Chinese visit the mountains or areas where have larger indigenous population and dine in their restaurants. There are some dishes are famous, especially with certain herbs and grilled meat. The only dish I can think of that is too popular and might appear in Han restaurant is 土窯雞/甕仔雞 （pot-grill chicken ), a special way to grill/bake/smoke the whole chicken in a clay pot

Wow.. except for the night market, this is so upscale. Everything looks delicious

actually still has a lot of the traditional Taiwanese food not introduced here, too bad. they are the best in the world. come and try it. like sticky rice, soft bean flour, oil rice, ... from the native Taiwanese long time ago. you will not believe it until you try it.

Just depends where you eat, in the small alley areas a lunch box might be 3 to 6 USD, but it also depends on how much you eat, many options for a low budget, and some amazing places at many price points. Despite having traveled to France, the absolute number one place for Creme Bruelee was in Taiwan,,, Night Markets such as Rao He, also have lower cost versions of things like Teppanyaki (Benihana style) food for decent prices, lots of small foods (on stick, or in small bowel) all over the place too if you never want to have a "proper" meal. So, 100NT lunch, sure that is possible, noodles/ lunch box/ other just look for lines and certain parts of town in the alleys, or out at ShrLin Night Market you can have a hundred or more options of places to eat all in one spot.

The typical Taiwan diet is about 10% meat, much healthier than our USA version of a diet, way back when I lived there (almost 30 years ago) it was hard for the pure vegetarians because a small amount of meat was in a lot of dishes, but full vegetarian restaurants are more common now, and for the non-Vegans, that are ok with eating some other things it is absolutely a fantastic place.

I never fully sorted out the local "Land Gods" from the "Regional Gods", but I do admire the "Goddess of the Sea" and the "God of War" as well, both important to the subject I teach (Business)

It's interesting that she feels that the century egg tastes like a normal egg

I heard that Taiwan used to be an American territory and Taipei was Formosa.

It used to be part of Japan (not America*) but you are correct about Formosa. There are still many natives who carry on the Formosa culture today in Taiwan. The Chinese civil war drove many from mainland China to flee to Formosa (which was originally supposed to be a temporary retreat) and Formosa remain under military rule for many years until the 1990s when there was a bloodless reform to Democracy. Lee Teng hui whom many known as Mr.Democracy was Taiwan's first democratically elected leader. Technically Formosa can become its independent nation as one of the few alternatives instead of the other options such as unifying with the mainland that has fallen to the ghost of USSR's communism =/, maintaining the status quo, restarting the civil war, etc. E.g It become its own country and the Taiwanese are just migrant settlers who are permanently welcome there.

Pavel S only HKers call that kind of food as “dim sum” then British introduced that wording to westerners. In fact, that is such a huge misunderstanding. The rest of Chinese in the world, the word “dim sun” （點心） is just a general name for snacks or cookies but never dumplings kind of food.

It really tastes delicious, but she had a very mild version, you need to try the version with lots of the stinky dofu sauce.

The lady presenter is German? She talks and acts like one of those cheap and cheesy overblown American food entertainers when she teams up with that, wanna be an American, Chinese guy. Apart from that quite interesting.

I hate century egg. Tastes nothing like a normal egg as she says. Tastes really salty and fermented. I puked everything out.

This host is terrible. She shouldn't be hosting food documentaries.

My brief overnight layover years ago led me to believe that taiwanese food is boring. I traveled the world but I haven't seen Any unique, healthy food from them. I Do like Taiwanese, just never their food.
