26 buildings in a 7.4 quake is impressive. given the population density and urban sprawl, the lack of destruction is a testament to the engineers and construction workers quality of work. the quake in turkey was a 7.8 and killed like 60 thousand people.

Or maybe that’s the difference between a 7.4 and a 7.8 quake magnitude? You couldn’t really compare the two. The ONLY way you could compare something like this fairly would be if you had two different engineers one from Taiwan and for arguments sake the other from China. They had each designed a building and were built side by side each other in Taiwan. Both buildings were constructed within one month and had to start and finish the construction on the same day. The two buildings were then subjected to an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude. Which ever building structure held better than the other, is the better structured building. This would be the only way to compare the two fairly. This probably will never happen in our lifetime. Unless, someone does this for a t.v show or something? This is actually a good idea for a show, which engineer can design an earthquake proof building. This would be VERY interesting to see, especially if we had engineers contestants selected from every single country in the world. Kind of like an ENGINEER OLYMPICS!

why? so far it seems pretty quiet natural disaster-wise to me. maybe I'm skewed being in Florida and having seen the 2004 hurricane season. and wasn't that the same year of the chrismas tsunami that killed like 250,000 people? then katrina in 05 if I remember correctly. when was the Japanese tsunami that took out the nuclear power plant. more than 4 years ago, I think.

Although the vast majority of buildings in Taiwan are constructed of reinforced concrete, due to high population density, most buildings are a mix of residential and commercial designs. The upper floors are apartment buildings and the ground floors are commercial storefronts with large glass windows. Because commercial uses require large open spaces, ground floors often lack seismic walls. As a result, these ”solid reinforced concrete buildings“ with upper floors turned into ”soft-footed shrimp building designs“ due to insufficient support from the earthquake-resistant walls on the ground floor. Once a strong earthquake occurs, even skyscrapers made of reinforced concrete will immediately tilt or collapse.

In California, 1989, we had a magnitude 7.1 quake (the Loma Prieta) that killed 57, injured near 4000, and included the collapse of a major freeway. That this 7.4 killed/injured fewer in a more densely populated region speaks to either better design or better technology in the intervening time. Hope you all recover well.

So I see new construction in China collapsing with no adverse external forces, just falling apart, leaking, or inoperable on a calm sunny day. Yet Taiwan gets hit with a 7.5 and these buildings may have slid off their foundations but not collapsed, the windows are not even broken and walls not distorted. That earthquake was of a long duration too. China should pay attention to it's neighboring Nation Taiwan and see how things could be done in terms of quality, reliability, and good design.

It's just a symptom of what's known as exposure bias. Earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, other natural disasters, and wars have always been happening around the planet historically. The difference now is that everyone has a high def camera in their pocket to film these things and we can share the videos near instantly with the internet. Whereas in ye olden days, if you were in England and a tsunami hit Japan; you'd likely never hear about it.

In this situation, the people getting out of there cars when the quake hits, is this what they recommend? I feel like staying in your vehicle would be a hell of a lot more safe then getting out and risking a building or anything falling on top of you. At least in a car, you have a chance of surviving. You have maybe a 0.01% chance of surviving without one. I mean, there are only so many door jams you take cover under. My guess is there are many more people than there are door jams. So, I would think you have the best chance if you stay in your vehicle. Same goes true for search and rescue. What I don't like about God is that when this sort of thing happens, He doesn't just allow bad people to be killed; He allows good AND bad people to be killed. Doesn't seem fair to me.

Bad things happen to good people all the time. If you decide not to believe in God because of that then fine. But don't pretend it's anything other than an excuse. Faith in God is not contingent upon what you think is or isn't fair.
