DAY 97 of 100 DAYS of TAI CHI. In this Learn Tai Chi at Home episode, I'm going to teach you the first two most important "steps" or foot positions that every Tai Chi Beginner needs to know.
The two steps are called the Bow Step (or Bow-and-Arrow step) and the Empty Step. In Chinese this is Gong Bu and Xu Bu. These two foot positions account for 75-80% of all the moves in Tai Chi - so this is an important place to start.
Now here's the thing - don't just watch this video. Get up and DO THE DRILL!! lol ;-) Get on your feet, my friends. You get best at what you practice most.

Thank you for showing this in a clear and concise manner. I live far away from any tai chi place so I have to learn online. The problem I have found is alot of instructions online don't go basic enough or the instructor wears traditional clothing that makes it hard to follow the movement. Your videos go basic enough and you at least with what I have seen, wear gear that makes your movements easier to follow. Thank you for putting in the time to help us novices.

Hi David, I’m newbie in Tai Chi but I decide learn it with you. I am on retired and I think it is excelent way to keep strainght and calm. I am not English native speaker, I study Englich now. You explain very clerly every step of Tai Chi and I can understand you. It’s fantastic because I’m not advance in English. I hope I’ll be good at Tai Chi in 100 days practicing it with you.

Just found you...thank you for clear instructions and straightforward approach....subscribing now...will be an interesting addition to my Qigong and weight training I always felt that Tai Chi needed a face2face teacher but maybe not !!!! 63 years old so did ballet classical at school and all the funky, flower child dancing. Now dance around the kitchen or with children at school !!!

Thank you for the video. I personally think the explanations of the bow step and empty step in this video is clearer and easier to understand than in your TGC Tai Chi mastery course !

My wife bought a DVD to learn Salsa and I did say I think I am going to stick with Ki Gong. We had fun but it was quite a lot to take in. I am sure we will give it another go at some point in the future, but we are concentrating on getting some routines together to do some public demonstrations soon. Thanks for an informative and simple video. Keep them coming. Big love to you David and all your endeavors to help us.

Nothing wrong with dancing. When is started out I greatly admired a particular tai chi student who had prior dancing training. Her fluidity allowed better transfer of energy from ground upward. I think trying to emulate that flow helped my study of the art. So, thank you, Cat.

Hi David. I learned Tai Chi with your Great Courses series. It took me a year! and I'm glad i did it and took my time and learned it. I'm really not too bad at it now and can do the full 40 movements from that course. Your youtube videos will be a great way for me to keep on going - even though I am very jealous of your beach. Thank you.

Hi Mark - thank you so much! I'm delighted to hear that you like the Great Courses program and have been using it. Awesome! As far as the beach goes, the Sage says the Beach is within all of us. We carry it with us wherever we go. (I don't suppose that actually helped at all, did it?) ;-)

Took ballroom dancing class decades ago, long before I had ever heard of taiji. Have forgotten everything I ever learned. Interesting story though - not too long ago, Lynda and I were at a wedding reception, and we got out on the dance floor and had fun flowing together - mixing white crane, filipino arnis and taiji moves together freely - sometimes she led, sometimes I did - we had a great time. Afterward, a friend came up to us and asked if we'd been taking dance lessons!

Good Morning David-Dorian. I love reviewing the basics to establish a solid foundation. In the description of the episode, will you please include the spelling for the words you are highlighting in the episode. Sometimes, you even add words into the video...having the phonetic and the pin yin side by side in the video will be a way to quickly see the word as I hear you saying it. Loving the words of the day! Maybe there could be a recap lesson on the words & phrases we should know how to say. Thank you for your help and generosity with your gifts of time and talent. Oh- no I have not taken a dance lesson... but you already know that. Bet, you couldn’t tell. 😉 But, I could learn from this guy (you)! You are truly amazing at teaching and sharing your world with others! Much love to you and your entire family.

I took one dance class back in the 70's at Jo Jo's Dance Factory. (It was rumored that Jo Jo taught John Travolta some steps.) In any event, I had the time of my life, dancing with the instructor, that is. My dance partner didn't have such a fun time. Yeah, I could have taken lessons on my own. But, well, as they say, it takes two to tango! :D

Reviewing fundamentals is a good thing. I noticed that the tailbone drops into place on it's own when your feet are in the right position. Reason I never caught that before was, due to the small space I have to practice in, my steps were always shorter, and not as stable. I also noticed when practicing the long form, that having a good "foundation" makes the kicks a lot easier. As far as dance lessons, when I was five or six, my mother had me take tap dancing lessons, I was the only boy in the class. Even performed in a recital.. That was in 1962 - 1963.

Does square dancing in elementary school gym class count? Still one of the most mortifying experiences of my life - not only did you have to ask a girl to be your partner, then you had to do all those complicated moves! Pretty sure I’ve never recovered. 😉 On a different topic, I’d appreciate hearing your thoughts on Tai Chi and conditioning: I’m pretty winded after doing the 103 form a couple of times (and thank you so much for giving me the ability to say that!), and I’m wondering if it’s a matter of general conditioning or if I’m just not relaxed enough doing the form. Also, I get through the form in about 15 minutes, which, based on videos I’ve seen, is about 10 minutes too fast. I’d appreciate your thoughts on pacing. Thanks.

I’m learning slowly . I don’t have a large screen , I have a note pad and so I have to watch , memorize , then practice but to me tai chi doesn’t seem like a dance it’s more like a road sobriety test

LOL - I suppose in a way it is. One of my teachers used to say that Tai Chi was a way to "wake up." And don't worry about "getting it." Just keep on and have fun. It's secretly working its way into your body.

Started out with the beginners one and now I see that there are 100 days and then the one for beginners, but they seem all out of order?? Please give me some direction when you can!! Thank you so much! Light and Love
