How to START Learning Tai Chi

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

What's the best way to start learning Tai Chi? Should you learn a traditional Tai Chi routine step by step? Or should you first get a book or dvd and study the basics? In this video, I show what I think is the best way for beginners to start learning Tai Chi (taiji).
By the way, I've made two versions of this video. I've gotten quite a few comments from viewers who find it hard to follow the Tai Chi session from the front - so I've also made a version you can follow from the back! To watch that version, click here:

This was amazing. I decided that I wanted to learn Tai Chi a couple of months ago. I've tried a couple of different teachers, but I got bogged down in the talking and explanations of the movements. This one was perfect and I actually made it through the entire program, moving my body the whole time and not feeling like a bumbling idiot. Thank you.

Love the lesson. Helping during lock down to improve my moves. New to Tia Chi and found these instructions fit well with those I had started to learn. Will look for more only wish I could do on the beach in CA instead of my back garden.

Thank you! I've been wanting to learn Tai Chi for some time. I'm 64 years old and the discipline will be my challenge, but I time on my hands to practice and learning to be self discipline. ❤

This is only my 5th day! I think I am going a little backwards but I appreciate this gift. I start with the chair over 60 and have been exploring everyday. It is amazing that I can do this. I have compromised lungs after a cancer battle. I can not go to my pulmonary exercise classes due to the shelter in place.. I wasn't sure but I think this will work for me. You make it seem so flawless.! You make it easy to follow and that it great! Thanks! You will be my new teacher.

As a student, I had to discover visual learning. I am still a student @ it...this will be my first ACTUAL follow-along. I'm interested in many reasons, but mainly 3 main goals. Won't be naming them here, but in order to find what it was like, I had to follow one of the videos to discover what I enjoy/don't enjoy about it. Which meant: I had to skip the step-by-step process & find out if it works for me or not. I enjoyed every bit of the videos that I followed. It worked for me & it was also a confirmation to my goals. Thank you!

Nice, teally glad you gave the rear view as well. May i suggest on future rear view tapes, the camera operator shoot from a slight angle...not side, but rear favoring a side. That way your hand and arm movements can be seen as well. Anyway great job as usual.

I like the top down approach. My computer screen is not too large, and sometimes I couldn't see what you are doing with your hands. I like the flow that comes with the leg positions. They are very graceful, and must be excellent for balance.

Thank you, Mr. Ross. I have been enjoying Qigong for a few years now. It is awesome to start adding Tai Chi to my workouts. After spinal surgery last year, I have little use of my legs. Learning to walk again. Your seated Tai Chi is a wonderful addition to my Qi Gong. I am now able to stand for a few minutes at a time. This is a good start for me to continue growing and healing with Qi. I enjoy you teaching style. Thank you again.

I am off to purchase some of your DVDs and learn about Tai Chi. Your teaching style is excellent and suits the way my brain learns. I'm so excited to have investigated Tai Chi. Thank you for putting up some classes here on YT.

@@DavidDorianRoss I have now purchased & used 3 of your DVDs - Flow, 24 Form & Paradise - and signed up to, and started, Mastering Tai Chi on The Great Courses. So your videos here have set many balls into action for me. It's great that I can learn all of this living out in the countryside in Scotland, UK, with no access to actual live classes in my area. two cool moves: Piering the Clouds and Riding the Clouds, why are they not called piercing the waves (ocean) or riding the waves (ocean). They mimick the ocean waves so much.

i was also taken by the music. I was reminded of the music Mathias Duplessy did for "Poetry Film Tao Master." But his insrumental Berceuse also reminds me of DDR's selection. Well, a lot of his music has that same feel.

I'm glad I tried this, but I didn't feel too relaxed, I was too worried about what to be doing and how to breathe and where my legs/feet should be, then I felt like I had to catch up and that messed up my slow moving. Sinking the Qi was the easiest. The good thing is I did like it and I could have kept moving for much longer than the 12 minutes I tried. I think being very overweight is a problem too. Oh well, I don't want any confusion or weight to stop me, I just want to move and gain some benefit from learning at least a little tai chi!

Realy nice video! After doing Taiji for a year as a hobby, I also wanted to experience all the depth to master it at some point. This was over 10 years ago. You are absoluteley right. Somehow there are two types of students. But there are also several types of teachers. 😉 Maybe a video like new students find the right teacher?
