older watch, much loved, now requiring decisions...minor to some but important to me, as a lover of watches.

A quick update... I have managed to free the bezel with a liberal soaking with WD40 and a tooth brush. Then a final clean with rubbing alcohol. Still pondering on the strap/bracelet! Thanks to everyone for watching!

Agree with you 100%, it’s such a reliable, accurate watch. Mine is from 1986, maybe 1987, with the red and black painted bezel(cheapest in the line-up back then I think) and it’s in similar condition to yours and I put it on a NATO strap. It really suits its tool watch nature. Regarding restoration, I personally would leave the case exactly as is but I’d replace the crystal and seals. A new crystal and you’ll fall even more in love with it than you already are!

Really? That's fascinating, I will check him out. I guess I have always felt that people underrated these watches, an early quartz non digital homage(ish) watch had to be good. And my 34 years with one has proved beyond doubt just what great watches they really are. We need to spread the word! Thanks again for the advice, and for taking time to watch and comment.

Great video. I own the same watch a Tag Heuer 980.613B, purchased new in 1993 for US $300 in Los Angeles, California. It's the only wristwatch I own. I have had no problems over the years. Last year, I sent it to Tag for a full service and had the crystal replaced for US $300. TAG would not replace the bezel insert. I purchased a replacement on EBAY and had a local jeweler do the work. The jeweler mentioned that the watch now looks like new. Regarding the jubilee bracelet, if a local jeweler can't tighten up the links, be on the lookout for an OEM replacement online. Take care.

Great video! My suggestion: put this old servant on the shelf to preserve it in its current condition. It's a nice piece to keep and preserve given its long history but I don't think it's worth it to swap the bracelet out to a non-original. I would rather keep it in its current condition as an heirloom and move on to something newer and fresher.

I have the same watch. Also 33 years old (1990). I took it for a service two years ago. It was serviced by Tag twenty years ago. A few years ago I bought a Rolex Yachtmaster. I wore the Rolex for 1.5 years and started wearing my Tag again 6 months ago. Your watch is the witness to your life. Get it serviced, and maybe get a new bezel insert to freshen it up. New bracelets are not too expensive, but getting one that fits might take some research. I have left mine as is, and am enjoying it. Nice video.

What a nice story, and it nearly perfectly dovetails with mine! For all these years I just thought all watches were this durable and so so easy to live with....but they aren't! I agree about the bezel insert and bracelet too, and when I get things together I will post a small update video. Some years ago I treated my other half to a Rolex oyster bimetal, and although it is a marvel from an engineering point of view, it has been a problem from the start...all sorts of issues, and cannot even tell the time with being looked at every few years! Give me an older Tag Heuer any day. Recently I slipped up and bought a Moonswatch....could not be more different from our old 1000 series Tag's...very delicate and vulnerable, poor excuse for a watch tbh! Thankyou so much for taking the time to comment.

The bracelet can be firmed up by pinching the links tighter with a pliers. I does work, I have the same watch from a couple of years earlier.... Next were moving shop and had a sale... my brother bought it and sold it to me when he upgraded. Wore it for 20 years while driving trains. Superb watch, wish i was mechanical.

Did you look for a replacement or move on to something else? @@HouseandCarHacks Thank you. Yes that's true, I did try to replace it but i couldn't find the exact model. There were lots of 2000 professionals though which i didn't want and i was also reluctant to spend that much on a watch again. I wound up buying something that turned out to be a complete waste... I'm sure something will pop up concerning your bracelet as people end up trying to sell vintage times pieces/ parts.. Moonswatch!? that be a great video to make, those are super popular now and hard to get.

You could replace the bracelet, maybe with a nato strap? You could buy an ultrasonic cleaner or take it to a watchmaker to do it. The movement usually is taken out for that process for safety. It would clean your bracelet and potentially free the bezel up. Timekeeping isn’t likely to be an issue, it is a quartz watch. It has the memories and battle scares of the past. I would get it serviced (in this case it would be a cleaning and all gasket change). To preserve water resistance and avoid water ingress or steaming up. They can pop the bezel off and clean underneath. Should not cost a fortune. But this video made my smile, a time piece for a lifetime:)

I have a 2000 series Tag, probably about 10 years newer than yours. I took it to a Tag Heuer AD. I asked them to send it back for "Remise à neuf". Effectively they buffed it, polished it, got scratches out, replaced some bracelet links, and sent it back in a nice box. I was delighted with the result.

Get new spring bars and a nylon pass through strap. “Zulu Strap” similar to a nato but better in my opinion. You will never loose it. I dive and it’s the best thing to use on a dive watch. Wear it as a beater and get a new watch for a daily.

@@HouseandCarHacks more than welcome, I reckon a bond nato would be the bomb with that! I have one for my Carrera and whilst I love the bracelet it's nice to keep it free from nicks and scratches and Heuer's also go very well with blue straps too! but enjoy, they're cheap and fun, they can be too tight though and cause springboard failure but good spring bars help and the second spring bar doesn't fail but full disclosure as I've only had it happen on my grandad's vintage Porta but that was the old spring bars in there.

Get new spring bars and a nato strap and leave it as it. It is a quartz watch and in pretty rough shape - not worth spending money on "fixing it up." A nato will work well stylistically with a well worn watch. A new bracelet is not got to match the look.

Great comment. They are so underrated these watches and only picking up their deserved kudos now. All those years ago I vasilated between the night diver and my black face version...it was neck and neck! I chose mine in the end as back then the night diver looked so different from anything else, I wasn't sure how my peers would have responded to it. Also I was concerned that the face might discolour over time...all unfounded fears as time has proved. You have found a great series of watch to collect.

Have you tried some silicone oil , to lose up the bezel ? Or wd40 ? A dark brown leather strap in a vintage style would look cool on it. Easy to replace with an aftermarket jubilee for under £30 . Probably wise to get new spring bars too.

I think your Tag 1000 series is worth probably less than $400 USD in its current state. Recently archived data from WatchCharts on all Tag's. I collect Tag's from the 1000 and 2000 series, bought mostly new. Look around and you may find a solid link late variant OEM bracelet jubilee, but it may cost more than the worth of your 1000. I do know they made the jubilee two tone with solid center links, I have a couple pieces NOS OEM. The bracelet, replace or make sure the cotter pins, spring bars and center links aren't spreading open, the bracelet should be good. The spring bars can be tricky, if in doubt replace. I have a 18mm jubilee NOS Tag Heuer OEM polished hollow center and brushed outer links bracelet. May part with if the price is right. The bezel insert is generic, was/is available. Just some additional info. The ETA movement is a 7 jewel quartz, pricing was (nickel tone) $25 and (gold tone) $35, Asian and Swiss respectively a number of years ago. All my 1000 series has originally the nickel tone movement.
