As far as Grosschartner who I completely forgot to add to the video. He may save the giro for Pog or he may be the fifth rider on the team in the mountains. Anyone’s guess on Grosschartner fitness right now.

Just read an interview with Grosschartner. Not much information about his fitness, more about race tactics. They expect two stressful tight weeks and a different last week with big time differences. Confident that he can extent his contract soon.

The biggest challenge for Pogacar in the grand tours is going to be the DS riding in the car. Pogacar and co have not been known for having the best tactics in the grand tours, but it has been mostly fine because Pogacar has insane power. For Pogacar to succeed in both the Giro and the Tour, he cannot afford to be burning matches like crazy whenever he wants to. The team needs to be better with their tactics if Pogacar wants to make history.

The UAE team for the Giro is very solid. The UAE team for the TDF is overflowing with quality. My guess is that once Tadej puts some time into your 2nd and 3rd page riders, they will not try to attack him but spend all of their efforts for a podium. Then UAE can let people go up the road, and let the others do the chasing, if they can evade the knucklehead valley.

Completely agree. He has to gain a big enough buffer in the relatively easier 1st week and then be in cruise control in the 2nd and 3rd weeks. Even if he decides to go for stage wins, there is no need for long-distance solo efforts on the mountain stages. Just follow the Roglic model......remain with the leaders and then just beat everyone in the final uphill sprint.

Great analysis and perspective Chris. When I read the video title, I wondered if you meant greedy as in upsetting the peloton with his dominance and "too many" stage wins. With TP going into the Giro as the overwhelming favourite (as in, barring something unforeseen or unfortunate, he will win convincingly!), I wonder if we might see some collaboration by other GC hopefuls and their teams to put the hurt on Tadej. It would seem like a sensible, but controversial, strategy if other GC riders want a genuine chance at overcoming Tadej.

Chris, Domen Novak was already exceptional in 2022 Giro, he was one of the best mountain domestiques for Mikel Landa, who was 3rd in the end. And Novak was also 2nd in Stage 20 mountain stage finishing on Passo Fedaia. Another great performance was his 2020 Giro where he survived a long time on Stelvio and paced for Pello Bilbao. He isn't that new to cycling world if you really watch races more closely than the top few riders.

If you agree 😂🎉😂 I would love to hear your analysis, Chris, about the "nervosity" experienced in any Grand Tour, as Teams engage each other on the first stages. I've noted elsewhere the "Curse of Stage Two" ~ where organizers' choices often lead to bizarre passages through road furniture, etc. Half the riders on half the teams know each other pretty well, but the rest are hyper-nervous and I would think this impacts safety strongly? Just a thought for a BTC exposé? "Grazie mille" 😂❤

  • @ChrisHornerCycling

The road furniture is always there but during the GT lots of riders have their top form still during the first week so this helps greatly increases crashes. Here at the Giro we should see a bit less crashing (except on raining stages) because the first two stages are hilly. 🤔🦋👊🗻

Grosschartner I’m not sure of. At Romandie Siv and Adam Yates were last two standing with Ayuso. Catalunya he was bit off, I’m thinking about stage 1 where Pog was left solo. But earlier in the beginning of the season he was better. At LBL Domen was super so he was stuck in my mind. Bjerg is always going above his weight often in a GT for Pog so he’s hard to forget. Grosschartner I meant to chat about but I forgot too. My bad but I couldn’t tell you what to expect from Gross for this giro. 😬🦋👍

Pogacar shouldn't bring his strongest riders but he will need protection for the Giro because all Pogacar needs to do is follow any other rider he dont need much help if he has the gap he needs to win the Giro. Sorta boring racing but with potential to go Giro Tour double, or gasp, Giro Tour Vuelta, is it a valid idea? He'd basically be recoved entirely from the Giro and fresh for the Tour.

That’s the beauty of Spain and Italy. The teams are never super stacked which leads to man against man often on the last climb. Even Ineos lack climbers compared to their last years team but they do have Ganna and if Ganna is on 100% form he could make the race exciting especially if Pogi is missing riders early in this Giro and mechanical issue happens along the flatter roads. I agree UAE is good enough if Pogi teammates all ride to their level and nothing goes wrong. 🤔🔥👊🦋

I see TP being able to control the mountain stages by riding hard at the start of long climbs to make a selection such that nobody has teammates... and in mano a mano, I can't see anyone betting against TP. I think that TP can win stages without taking a lot out. His riding earlier this year has shown this. I predict that he will start in style, get a lead, and then have fun, knowing he doesn't need to ever drill it. He doesn't even need to max out the TT stages if he is not 100%... A 1-horse race can be great to watch when the entrant is this good...

Not picking you out greg:),but it felt like the occasion to make this comment. I do feel man ypeople think mano a mano, means man to man, rather than hand to hand. I appreciate they are not totally dissimilar concepts, but the point of mano a man to man is it is 1-2-1, hand to hand doesn't necessarily mean that, although is likely.

The Giro has over 40,000m of climbing including a stage with over 4000m in one day. Plus 2 TT 40km and 30km, Poggi is going to have to box smart, and perhaps boring. Try and establish a buffer early on then sit on the wheel of others. Clearly this is only my inexperienced opinion. As always it will be exciting to watch, on the chesterfield.

I think TP is hungry to break records of sorts. I don’t think His team mgmt ist capable to reign him in. TP will want to win the Giro at all costs. How many stages he will win is down to how ‘hungry’ Tadej feels and how often his disobeys team mgmt.

Think Pog gives Ineos/Boro a slight advantage until the last week in the Mountains. These Teams will ride blindly for Pog. I think Jonus will be strongest in the last week of the Tour and Pog will need his form there. If he rides the first two week of the Giro, that is a long gap to be at top form. I think the buffer for a Giro is a luxury too far. The Giro is less value than the Tour. Jonus has gifted Pog a chance at the Tour so this is where the priority should be. Although Pog is collecting trophies so maybe the Giro is the focus?? Silly man, the Tour is the Tour. :)

Weight isn't everything. Weird how Navarez was so poor. Pog without power meter on the climb with second bike. I remember watching Pantani on tv with this climb and it was crazy. As Sean Kelly would say it was an Unbelievable ride (love the word Unbelievable- code word) Moser on the finish line too, maybe offering helicopter flights for Ineos (Moser winning Giro TT getting help from helicopter by tv cameras flying in front of Fignon, oh those Italians! ).
