Tacx NEO Bike Smart: Unboxing and Building 🔧 // Part I

Спорт

Part 1: The Unboxing and Building of the Tacx Neo Bike SMART
In this video I'll cover the logistics of the process (56kgs is apparently too large for my local courier to handle!?). I'll then turn the Lama Lab into a snow dome. Then I'll do my best to clean up and attempt to assemble the Neo Bike Smart. It's quite the journey for what should have been a simple process.
Please subscribe to support this KZread channel: goo.gl/QS5YZg
Neo Bike SMART Overview:
Max resistance: 2200 W
Power accuracy: under 1% error
Max. simulated slope: 25%
Mass inertia: 125 kg / 275,6 lbs
Max. torque: 85 Nm
Max. brake force: 250N
Resistance unit: motor
Control: Interactive
Wireless connections: Bluetooth & ANT+
Features: Pedal stroke analysis, Virtual shifting, Gear feel, Road feel, Descent simulation, Dynamic inertia, Isokinetic and Isotonic training mode.
My pain points:
- The box isn't suitable for the device.
- The instructions need to be a little easier for the general user.
- Three different bolts for the same purpose (affixing the legs)!!??
- The crank length options is fiddly work.
- Adjustment stiffness... fixed with WD40... :/

Not really. Carboard would need to be used many times to justify the emmissions to create it while their usual styrofome packaging has very little impact aside from plastic waste. Plastic waste can be, and in many countries is recycled so in this instance the plastic most definitely wins.

@GPLama - i got a tacx neo smart trainer on 10/6/2022. my version had a different crank arm (3 holes of different crank lengths like the wahoo ) and it had different packaging, it looked like polystyrene but it was sort of ironed, so it didn't break up.

Hi, sorry, didn‘t see the question. My packaging was done very well. So no vaccum needed. The Pedal Fixation also changed. There are 3 threads to achieve the 3 different lengths. And it is easy to implement and fits well. So far I did 20+ rides and it is a lot of fun. The USB power is not enough to power up and IPAD Pro. But an Iphone. Noise is super low. I‘m very happy with the bike. My daughter is used to do the rides on a roll but after she tried the TACX she loved it.

My issue with assembly came down to the seat adjustability, did not move fore and aft smoothly which was annoying. I did not have the foam break so that was nice for me :-) Crank length is annoying to assemble as you found out. With a bit over 1000 (virtual?) mi on the bike I quite like it. Love the on the fly adjustments of the handle bars up/down/fore/aft to stretch out the body a bit from being on the bike for a while to stay fresh.

Agreed that the packaging is old skool and putting it together is far from optimal. Especially for such a high end and expensive product. But on the whole product use this is just the first and (arguably) soon forgotten part. I mean lots of people still buy at Ikea? What really matters is the quality of the bike in use. Hmm 🤔, IMOP the Tacx Neo 2 is superior against the Wahoo kicker 2018, road feel, technical, maintenance and reliability wise. Thats what I have experienced with the two products myself. But with the smart bike, I think it’s most likely the other way around! Wahoo made his home work with this product, still missing the road feel and we don’t know yet about reliability maintenance etc... yet, but it looks so much better. Let’s see how the Tacx smart bike is performing in the other tests, looking forward to that! 🤨 And BTW GP Lama 🦙, Chris Pritchard would be proud of your transitions!!! 😂😂😂

What I would like to know about is how service issues will be handled with these full bike trainers? i.e. Say the main resistance unit has an issue. Do you have to pay to have the whole unit shipped out? If so are shipping cost handled if you are still within warranty? What's the turn around time? Will you run into custom issues? How will repairs be handled when outside of warranty? In the case of this Neo could they not have designed it so the resistance unit could be fully swapped out? I'm thinking along the lines of future upgradability or electronic replacement here. Seems a shame that a perfectly good frame could potentially go to waste down the road...

Wahoo Bike already in the lead - We're going to buy one of these as we are sick of moving our bikes on & off the Kickr. But not have anything below a 170mm crank length means it's completely off the table as a choice & their 'solution' doesn't effectively have the capacity to accommodate a 165mm. Given that along with the actual design (I mean the lever not clearing the frame on the seat-tube is an engineering sin) - its just crap for the $$ in comparison.

The Christmas bells got me laughing hard! I'm not really falling in love with this type of products. Ignoring the price range (this Tacx or the Wahoo bike), it's just too much to have in a small house/apartment. Plus, having your wheel-on or direct drive trainer you can always upgrade parts (I'm thinking more about the handle bar, groupset, etc). Please correct me if I'm wrong on, but with these bikes you just can't. My final point, Tacx must have no aesthetics department. That thing is absolutely ugly. Wahoo wins in looks. Cheers Lama!

I think they're aiming at the petson that is purely a strava indoor rider, I'll refrain from "cyclist' or its aimed at the person with space and has no time and/or desire to stuff around swapping bike to trainer to bike infinitum. They've done their homework there is enough market for these trainers absolutely. Your dont need to upgrade parts though just replace parts if they need replacing. There's no chain or gears to worry about.

Peloton Interactive (Peloton) produce only a stationary bike and the software to run it (you can only use Peloton's software with their bike and so they have continued income from that requirement). Peloton are listed on the NASD as PTON. That is a good indication that there is a market for stationary bikes in that the company can meet the listing requirements and they buyers have no option to use third party software. I like using my bike with my saddle and bars, but there is definitely component wear doing that that you wouldn't have with the Wahoo or Tacx bikes.

I believe every spinning bike I've ever seen has had those long levers that you have to pull out like that. I guess it's kind of a compromise, the levers will be more in the way of things for short people, but they might also be the ones who have weaker hands and need a long lever to snug things up properly. Wonder how much more it would cost to include a bunch of proper ratcheting handles with the bike.

Slightly off-topic question, do all indoor trainers continue to report power until the flywheel stops spinning? The cadence correctly reports zero after 3 seconds but can take as long as 15 seconds for the power to stop reporting. This means a delay in Zwift Super-Tuck

  • @gplama

It depends on the trainer. If Twitter calculates/estimates power on flywheel speed then yep. Most don’t do this.

@@gplama My Direto takes about 15 seconds before I can do a Super-Tuck, owing to how long it takes for the power to stop reporting. Cadence is always zero after 3 seconds. I had a ticket open with Elite and after several emails told me that's just expected behavior. I don't have other trainers to compare it to. I was hoping you could shed some light based on your experience with other trainers.

NATIONAL CODE OF PRACTICE FOR MANUAL HANDLING NOHSC:2005 states; 4.23 (c) as weight increases from 16 kg up to 55 kg, the percentage of healthy adults who can safely lift decreases. Therefore, more care is required for weights above 16 kg and up to 55 kg in the assessment process. Mechanical assistance / team lifting arrangements should be provided to reduce the risk of injury associated with these weights; and 4.23 (d) generally, no person should be required to lift, lower or carry loads above 55 kg. Considering the neo units are also an awkward thing to deal with, I'm surprised Tacx didn't spend more time looking at all the ergonomic issues they've been having.

As for the 2/10 rating... #1 Courier delivery refusal - This seems not to be a Garmin issue, but an issue with the delivery company. Mine was delivered just fine. (By Sagawa Kyubin, a local delivery company). #2 The "snow dome". Mine also came with white foam, but not the brittle kind that breaks off so easily. It looks the same, but I suspect it's different, as no "snow" here. 3. The Ikea effect - I put mine together without any issues without looking at the manual at all. Now... I also bricked it when doing a firmware upgrade, so I got to go through the process twice - but at least they were nice about exchanging it without complaint :)

That's what unsettled me too. All these easy-fix things I ran into should have been workshopped with a focus group long ago. I'd visited Tacx HQ three times in the last 18 months. What could have gone down..."Shane, here's the bike in a box. Here's a room. Build it and give us feedback"..... I could have come to the same conclusions long ago. (maybe I'd have to throw the box down some stairs first to simulate real-world shipping conditions)
