Tactics Ogre: Reborn | First Impressions
Ойындар
Square Enix sent me a review copy of Tactics Ogre: Reborn, and these are my first impressions of Chapter 1. While I've been critical of remasters from Square in the past, this one shows incredible polish, likely due to the fact that original creator Yasumi Matsuno was heavily involved with its development. So far, I'm very impressed with the work they've done! Clearly, a lot of effort went into this!

I hope this opens the door for a remaster of the first Ogre Battle and the one for Nintendo 64; both are absolute masterpieces.

March of the Black Queen devoured so many hours of my childhood. I really really want either a spiritual successor to the series or a remake.
Funnily enough, I am also a big fan of Yasumi Matsuno, yet never got around to this one, so this video is extremely heartening for me!

@@DanielSantosAnalysis FFT is a powerful game, if you play this you'll see so many nods FFT made to tactics ogre. One of my favorites is the similarity between Riovannes and Coritanae, and the duel that Denam can have in its interior is very similar, though far less notorious, to the duel with Wieglaf. I love it all you should experience it!

Also a huge fan of Yasumi Matsuno, and I think you'll find that this is *the* definitive work of his career thus far. You're gonna love TO Reborn.
Wow awesome, I didn't realize you were playing this. I knew you'd love it. I have my reservations about the look of the sprites but there look to be so many other improvements I'll be getting this day 1. can't wait to play it again!
I love the art direction of the PSP remaster (which I played previously), and it's nice to see them reflect those improvements here, with the illustrative portraits and post-processing effects, but I'm really disappointed that they used filtered sprites in this rerelease. I don't think I've ever seen filtered pixel art sprites done well in any game. If they had an option to use the original sprites, I'd buy this in a heartbeat.
@effect4

My thoughts too, the new portraits look great, the new soundtrack sounds great, but the game as a whole looks like a shoddy AI upscaling made in a rush just to ship the game, very disheartening.
@sagewaterdragon

The weirdest part is that it doesn't seem like they're actually using filtered sprites, but they use a vector outline which gives that impression. If you look at the characters themselves they're still sprites, just redone at 4X the resolution of the original.

I remember playing Tactics Ogre as a kid. On my older sister's friend's playstation, and on my GBA - Tactics Ogre, Knights of Lodis. This review brings me back to those days and helps me remember the fun I had back then. I never mastered those games - Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, etc - but I enjoyed them!
Thanks for sharing your first impressions on this remake. I'm glad that it seems SE is focused on improving the gameplay experience and involving the original development staff so the vision remains constant to what was originally intended! This looks like a title I need to put on my wish list.
Thanks for putting out this video Mike! I'm excited to try this game out. I've never played anything in the tactics ogre series
I played and completed the PSP version twice like a decade ago and i will gladly buy this version and enjoy this masterpiece all over again. I cant wait!
This looks incredible! Thanks for the video.
So looking forward to playing this again. Although the characters voices sounded very different in my head 😂.
Didnt think they would add full voice overs, this is awesome!! 😃
So glad you're planning on covering this! It's truly one of the greatest contributions to RPG gaming. If Reborn is truly as good as it looks, it will be heavily due to the fact that it's been through a stepping stone of remasters and improvements starting with the SNES-->PS1-->PSP-->Modern. So much refinement and careful thought by the OG talent. I expect a polished masterpiece out of this to be frank, and it looks like that's exactly what we'll get.
So glad to hear these positive impressions. I played the PSX version decades ago and I loved it, not only due to the addicting gameplay, but due to Sakimoto’s soundtrack. Having the chance to get a remastered version on Switch is amazing
Can't believe they did it! remastered this gem and did such a fantastic job, I've seen a few reviews and everyone is impressed and very pleased with everything.

Whooaaaa so happy you guys got to try out the game early! And glad to hear you love it so far. Im so excited to finally try out this game
I am so looking forward to this - never played any of the ogre battle games yet. Really hope they do an upgrade for Vagrant Story I haven't played that yet either
I am loving how clean and smooth this looks. God, I can't wait for it!
Thanks for your impressions, great video, I'm really hyped for the game.
Commenting for the algorithm! Seriously, thank you for these kind of videos.
I hope we also get the sequel "Knight of Lotus" that has been exclusively on GBA for 20 years. I bought that one on a whim in high school and it was my introduction to the series and to tatics games in general. Definitely one of my favorite memories as a gamer.
Great review! I quite literally grew up with this game. The PS1 version had 36 different storyline to play. All I can tell anyone new to this, Characters play a very important part. Its hard to figure out which one to bring, but certain "hero" characters in your party has unique interraction with other characters. Sometimes this becomes key in order to persuade them to join your ranks, which can then effect the story line. So pay close attention to each of these characters interaction! Even their deaths has an impact. I also played the remastered PSP version and they added some new characters such as Ravness, (she was not in the original one). I hope this remaster has some new characters which spice up the story! Also there is a 100 lvl Ironman stage which is insanely difficult to finish, i havent manage to finish it either but it has alot of unique items, magic and a unique bloodline skill specific for each classes. But again, its Ironman, once you start you cant return untill you finished. (At least in the PS1 version) so be aware!
Thanks for this. It answered a question I had about whether or not the voice acting could be turned off or not. Glad to hear that the option is there.
This is getting me excited! Strange that so much care was put into this title while the pixel remaster FF games had so many issues. Maybe SE is learning some lessons on the game preservation front?
Matsuno made sure this thing was polished. I don't like pre-orders, so I'm buying this first thing once it's out. God save my bank account.
Thanks for the great preview Mike! I've never played Tactics Ogre, but love Tactics, and so I'm really interested in this due to Matsuno's involvement and the orchestrated soundtrack =D But man, I *loathe* what they've done to the sprites, and that's the only thing that gives me pause. It seems to be the only blemish on an otherwise spectacular remaster, but also one that's constantly in your face. I really don't understand why do Square Enix hate their old pixel art so much.
So excited, FF Tactics is my favorite game and I've also never played Tactics Ogre. This will be great, hopefully they're doing a remaster o FFT for PC as well. Squarenix must have talked with Matsuno about some other Tactics project since they reconnected.
Awesome. I only ever briefly played the psp version and glad to hear it seems to’ve been lovingly crafted
I bet we can mod the smoothing filter out on the PC version so it looks pixelated again. Or, I at least hope.

good stuff. the tactics ogre games have been a hole in my RPG history, looking forward to fixing that with this release.
They did a nice job with the blurring of the sprites to mimic how they looked on an old crt tv. The dialogue seems identical to the psp version but it’s still good
I'm incredibly excited for this to come out! I've had about 4 playthroughs of this and I still can't get enough. Excited to hear your thoughts about the game.
This will also (finally) be my first time playing. I'm glad it sounds like they nailed the port!

I have always loved the Ogre Series and still replay them on occasion. I know that there is a good core there but SQEX's tendency to make as many things worst as they make better generally drives me away. I am EXTREMELY skeptical of anything that SQEX puts out due to the managements focus on profit above everything else but this might convince me to give it a chance. Oh man that Main theme sample orchestrated sounds really gooood! I'm very excited how "Avilla Henya", "Vendetta" and "Three Kings" would sound. I'm alright with them making the dialogues Shakespearean though I liked it more straightforward like the previous versions. What I didn't like was the voice acting though. That's not how I imagined the characters would sound. Very lackluster. As if they're just reading their lines and they're told to sound like they should be in a play . Can't blame the VAs though, voice acting director might be responsible. But I might try the Japanese dub on my first playthrough if there is. Another one is the filtered pixel graphics. I hope there's an option to enable an unfiltered graphics. Anyway, I'm really excited for this. I love this game so much I played this back in 7th grade on my PS1 for a whole year of 2006 lmao. I'll get this on release.
I appreciate your thoughts on this! Thanks!
Glad to hear this version is turning out so great. Loved loved the psp version, dropped so many hours and playthroughs.
Pre-ordered. I am so stoked for this game.
Thanks for covering this! I remember playing a rented PS1 copy of Tactics Ogre way back and then finding a copy of it out in the wild to purchase. Loved the crap out of this game, and I'm excited to see what this remaster will be like. Your video has helped put some of my nerves at ease, as I was concerned about the quality of both the game itself as well as any potential changes to dialogue or story from a political/agenda-driven standpoint. Still not 100% assured on that last bit, but I don't mind dialogue with a more medieval fantasy flare to it. If that's the most that changes, I will be one very happy gamer in a couple weeks.
The music sounds A LOT like Ogre Battle: 64, especially the Title screen. I'm so excited. I have replayed Ogre Tactics : The knight of lotus on GBA so many times!
Good job bringing this to my attention, I hadn't heard of it coming! One gripe I have though. Where do I get it? You've neglected to mention where we can play it or what you were playing it on. I'm hyped though!

Sorry to be that guy but I don't believe we'll get anything else even if the game does well, simply due to redundancy & the possibility of confusing their modern consumer base. And no I'm not just thinking about Triangle Strategy. I'd be very happy to be proven wrong though.
I pray that game makers start making MANY MORE of these pixel art rpg games.

Tactics Ogre stuck with me ever since I found So excited for the remake!
I remember getting this game from Japan as a kid. I loved this game so much, as well as Final Fantasy Tactics. In high school I made a game with friends based on a little comic I drew as a kid JRPG style medieval fantasy, mixed with my other favorite strat game.. Shining Force.. Never got to finish it, but remaking both the comic and game today.
ur Impressions, reviews and opinions are very wellcome!
I was playing the PSP version around the time this remaster was announce and decided to wait to play it on Switch, I don't have a Switch yet, but I was enjoying this game so much that I'll be buying the console just so I can play it on my tv screen. Things will get more interesting for you after the plot twist at the end of the first chapter ♥️
i'm curious if the "smooth" graphical filter can be turned off to restore the sharper pixels? it looks rather blurry to me. everything else about this remaster appears to be on point.
a rare pre-order for me. Because i know it will be good. I never played tactics ogre, but I fell in love with FFT back in the PS1 era. I remember buying FFT not having the slightest clue what it was. I just saw that it was a final fantasy game and figured it had to be good because of that. And i was more than right! This game, although it is one i have never played, is very clearly FFT's twin and the game that inspired it. I can't wait until the 11th. Hey Square Enix, please port War of the Lions to the Switch already!!! No one wants to play that game on a mobile samsung or apple device!!! And the PSP screen stinks! PORT IT TO SWITCH ALREADY!!!
One of the best PSP games you can find.
love to see this
I really hope this does extremely well so that they look at giving us more console ports of tactics ogre games If there are any, and also Final Fantasy War of the Lions as well. Also, still want those Final Fantasy Pixel remasters on console as well.
I hope you fall in love with it as much as I did! And that it's the next game covered in the podcast too!
I'm interested in that per-unit leveling. The per-class levelling allowed you to focus all EXP to a single class and be a squad of Archers ~20 levels higher than story battles by mid Chapter 2. XD
Holy moly this looks good, and I had no idea it was coming! Thanks for the heads up!
Looking forward to getting to play this one. I hope the success of this game will lead to a new remaster/port of FFT War of the Lions.

I loved the PSP version so this is def an early purchase for me. Also love Sakimoto's score --- Recommendation, since it's very easy to play the ENTIRE game without hearing the best track of music: Look up the track "Impregnable Fortress" from the PSP OST (or this orchestrated version); it's genuinely amazing in its unrelenting intensity.
I played the psp version and loved it, but it’s been so long I don’t even remember how the story plays out…
What they've done to the sprites is unforgivable.
This looks good. Personally, I prefer a pixel font but the one they used isn't that bad. I am not a huge fan of the black outlines around the characters either. I prefer the crunchy pixels of PS One version but I will still buy this to support the remake of other retro classics.

I'm not one of those die hard old school Super Famicon Tactics Ogre fans who fully analyze all the mechanics and even write plot analysis essays (yes, we have those in Chinese community), but I'm still a big fan of them bringing back individual character level up vs class wide level up. Hope this style of more complex SRPG can make a true comeback. The last one I remembered that wasn't an indie project was still Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2.
Please God make a Tactics sequel. A real one. No "laws", none of that horseshit.
Thank god this huge fan is getting around to a game he had 30 years to check out thanks to a SE pre release copy.
Question: You say it has HD character sprites. Does it have a mode to use low definition sprites or something like that? Not that it's a deal breaker or anything, I'm just wondering.
Oh fuck yeah he's finally playing it! For a quick sum up of all the changes it is pretty much all we wanted with putting together the two versions (original release and PSP release), ironing out problems that were in the PSP version and putting together stuff from the other games in the series and taking ideas from the One Vison mod. For an indepth analysis: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dpd70Jizerrbqqg.html
I am really looking forward to this. FFTactics is probably one of my favorite gaming experiences of all time and I've longed yearned to check out the game that was the most direct inspiration of it! I will almost certainly turn off the voice acting. These older games never feel quite right to me with voice acting. It's like an anachronism.
Picked this up day 1 and am loving it. A little nervous because of SE's iffy ports and the recent influx of new and ported SRPGS (especially on the Switch from Banner Saga to Regalia to Langrisser to Triangle Strategy). When I played this on ps1 I thought it was the king of the SRPG, glad to know it still is and is widely available.
