Tablo Quad HDMI Over the Air DVR Review

Ғылым және технология

In this video I review the Tablo Quad HDMI over the air DVR. It features four built in tuners, channel guide, automatic commercial skip, advanced recording options, and direct connection to your TV set via HDMI. This is one of the few over the air DVRs that can connect directly to your TV set. How well does it work?

    Thanks for the great review! About four months ago, I bought my Tablo 4-tuner based on your review. It is my first antenna dvr setup in 20 years, and I love the Tablo and it's programming guide. It makes my antenna setup 5x more valuable. I can watch recorded shows anytime, and on any TV, and the programming guide is very affordable. I also bought my antenna setup based on your reviews. Hurricane Ida survivor here. I had an antennas Direct Max V mounted on my roof and is SURVIVED THE STORM! Ida was a cat 4 hurricane when it hit me, and it survived and still works. Only thing that broke off was the plastic clips that held the vhf element in place, but I fixed it with some zipties, should be good till at least one more storm.

    Ida was fun, not really, but my antenna, a double stacker survived. Had tv with my generator while all other communications, internet, cellular, phone, were out. Powering a router and one of these units would allow watching local updates to smaller devices instead of powering a tv from a generator. Ida made me buy a old radio regardless.

    It would be cool if you did a comparison of the sensitivity/robustness of all the tuners you've reviewed on the same antenna. Maybe even include how well it picks up multipathed signals (the meter you got will show the spectrum for ya so you can see multi path signsls as ones that have a sweeping fade)

    Thanks for the review and the discount code! I used it and ordered this unit for my home theater. Please note - I never see this mentioned in reviews for this kind of device, but often the requirement for an HDMI equipped OTA tuner is specifically for home theater / projection purposes. My "TV" is an Epson projector. Even if it had a tuner built in, I'd need a tuner in my equipment rack; as I'm running HDMI to my projector for video only. Also - for this purpose, a large screen projector - it is *very* important to have the un-recoded raw MPEG2 as transcoding artifacts could be visible on such a large screen. This will replace a Mediasonic Homeworx model that has stopped working, the glorified tuner box style you mention in your review. I'm hoping this will work better as I was never very happy with the Mediasonic device.

    I have the older Tablo Quad running in my house. It's wonderful to use and it's a nice treat to be able to watch TV on my laptop and cell phone. The premium subscription service for commercial skip will not be available for Tablo units activated after July 19th. That is a notice on their website. Using your guidance from your reviews I just replaced my now defective Fire Recast with the Tablo Quad HDMI and I could not be happier. Right from the start, the Tablo is much better than the Recast had ever been. If you want to stream you will still need the Firestick or Fire TV. The picture quality is excellent on all 3. I do use eithernet to connect everything. With this DVR I can watch recording on any of my TV's which have the Fire capability but like you said it is not compatible with my Smartphone. Thank you. I am very happy with my new DVR. You helped me make what I think is a good choice for my needs.

    Tyler, I just wanted to let you know that I have used my Quad HDMI for a week now. I am calling Dish Network and telling them to come get their hardware. I used your promo code, thank you! My only complaints are: 1) while viewing TV guide they need to play live TV thumbnail in small P.I.P. 2) The remote needs numbers so you can go directly to a channel without browsing the guide 3) when you select a live TV show on the guide, it should take you right to viewing instead of options on how to view. A person should be able to select recoding options another way. 4) There needs to be a search for show feature instead of browsing to find a show. 5) Next level would be option to stream apps. I would pay extra for this feature. I am very happy with its performance, picture, ease of setup and interface along with commercial skipping. Thank you for bringing Tablo to my attention.

    Just cut the cord, last week. Thanks for all your antenna evals and OTA DVR's. Have a Mediasonic Homeworx and had a Tablo DUO. I live in Monroe Ct and have 270 degrees of channels of interest. Also located next to some high hills directly betwix several stations,. All channels but one are UHF. Based upon the technical details of the Televes LR mix got the LR UHF only model. It works like a champ but needs to be on a rotor. And that is the problem for me with the Table. I could not manually scan for channels. The Mediasonic is great. I have used a PLEX server for years and the non-compatibility of Tablo with PLEX and thus no use of NAS storage for recordings is negative for me. I have replaced my HDHomerun prime cable tuner with an HDHomerun Flex Duo OTA. I drive my main TV hdmi with a computer. But all computer and wireless devices on my network can access OTA and other media content. Thanks and kudos again for all your great videos.

    You may need to purchase a second antenna, and possibly a signal amp so you can received all of your available channels without a rotor. It's not easy because combining 2 antennas using a spiltter/combiner will reduce the gain of both antennas by 3db. Perhaps Tyler can recommend an amplified combiner that joins 2 antennas without any loss of signal. I also agree that if a recorder doesn't support PLEX or a NAS, that would be a negative.

    It would be the bomb diggity if Tablo would come out with one of these having an ATSC 3.0 tuner. I know they are still watching and waiting, but a guy can hope eh? I judge the tuners in these OTA DVRs based on my experience with Samsung. Samsung makes some of the finest tuners on the market. I do wish Tablo would either upgrade their tuner or their splitter. I have two of the major networks in my market with weak signals. My Samsung TV has no problem with them. My Tablo has issues. I'm hoping ATSC 3.0 will correct this. I'm thinking about picking up a competitors product by the end of the year to see where I stand. Come on, Tablo! Up your game!!!

If we install an OTA antenna and connect one coaxial cable to it and then connect to a Tablo (or whatever is best), would that be able to allow all the TV’s to connect and use the OTA signal? I.e., more about the live-viewing experience and how easy it is to channel surf (use it as a normal tuner). Roku's tuner has become almost unuseable. A standalone tuner would be nice. I presume such would focus on the experience more than a swiss-army-knife tv would.

    Tablo's website says no lifetime subscriptions for the hdmi versions. A continuing $49 a year. It is supposed to work for two weeks without internet assuming you can get live tv and or have recordings. The two week limit says there is still something that keeps it from running standalone for longer than two weeks. The one good thing of the hdmi version is full 1080i that you don't get with the non-hdmi versions. Finally the hdmi version won't stream outside your network and has to have a subscription to stream inside your network via wifi or ethernet.

If you're a TiVo fan, you can still order a new TiVo THR-22 DVR for DirecTV from WeaKnees.com. Back in the earlier 2000's, there were lots of choices for DirecTV, but not any more. Why is the Roku streaming stick and most others, not recommended for the TV connect option? I am installing the Clearstream 4max, with The Juice pre-amp, and 4-way power splitter. We are within 20 miles of most towers. I will be installing where I take my satellite dish down and using the R-6 cable already there. Makes sense, because it is over 30 feet in the air and connections are there. Although the cables are connected to every room in my house, I will only use 4 on the splitter. Problem is, I just bought a Sony Bravia 85” Smart TV that I can plug the HDMI cable into for the DVR. If I go with the network connection, looks like my new Sony isn’t compatible. All the other TVs are Sony Bravia older models that will require a streaming device. I also wonder why my apple devices and computer are not supported, since there is an internet connection I can use with the subscription. Maybe you can recommend another DVR that better suits my needs.

    You forgot that stations like to discourage DVR use, so the record ahead/delay option works for stations that purposely offset their shows by minutes, so you lose minutes on another show on a different station. This trick was started in the later VHS days, so I always recorded 5 minutes early, and late, so they don't rob me of the entire show.

    It would be nice if one of these devices would have 4 antenna inputs and every tuner could choose any one of the antennas to connect to on the fly. Then you can have a truly powerful system that can pull in channels from fringe areas from multiple directions without rotating the antenna. Maybe that's too specific for wide appeal, but I would buy one.

  • @rickwest2818

    @rickwest2818

    @@deadcarnahans1932 directional antennas have always been used with tv. Back in the analog days, a signal could bounce off a large building and arrive at the antenna slightly delayed from the line of sight signal. This would cause a double image, or ghost image, on the screen. Directional antennas minimized this effect. With DVT, the second signal may cause enough interference with the line of site signal to create errors in demodulation. Having a directional antenna is also good for longer range reception. Rejecting a signal from behind usually means the antenna is that much more sensitive in the front. You might want this if your tv transmitters are far away. If you live, say, 50 miles from 2 cities and said cities are in different directions, you might want 2 directional antennas to pick up both.

    @@deadcarnahans1932 it can work sometimes, but not always. If you're combining uhf and vhf antennas, you can use a uhf/vhf combiner without issue. Will work great. If you're combining two antennas of the same rf band, there will be losses and interference. Probably the biggest problem will be if an interfering signal comes in from the antenna that's not intended for the signal. If your primary signal is weak, noise from the second antenna may be enough to knock out the reception. Another scenario is the second antenna could have a small lobe behind it, or to the side, that creates destructive interference with the main lobe of the first antenna. It gets very complex and varies from location to location and antenna to antenna. This is the reason for my original post.

    I've had a Tablo for a few days in order to cut the cord and avoid multiple remotes. I found that I can reliably receive at least twice as many stations with the antenna connected directly to the TV compared with connecting the antenna directly to the Tablo. The only difference is removing the connector from the TV and connecting the same connector to the Tablo. It appears that the tuners in the Tablo are less sensitive than the ones in the TV. Doing some Internet searching, I found that a number of others have found the same issue. I hadn't planned on spending another $80-$100 on a better antenna, and Tablo doesn't say that a stronger antenna is needed. I see that you said the the Tablo tuner picked up more stations than your TV, but that's not what I found. Any suggestions? I generally like the Tablo because it resolves problems with an older family member in dealing with multiple remotes, but I see this as a significant drawback.

  • @carchi1

    The tablo quad has a built-in 4 way splitter which will weaken the signal when split four times. Tablo says they have a built in amplifier to compensate but when split four times the signal weakens significantly. A higher gain antenna would help provide a stronger signal as would an antenna amplifier mounted near the antenna. Mounting the amplifier further away from the antenna would not work as well because it would also amplify any noise acquired along the way. Also for best performance, do not split the signal from that antenna with other tv receivers. Note that higher gain beam type (Yagi) antennas tend to be more directional and may need to be aimed more precisely. Off axis stations may not come in well. If you have one main transmitting location you should be good to go. Other options would include using an antenna rotator but that gets complicated.

    I am wondering how many channels your Tablo receives. I am asking that question because I am curious about the Tablo's input when 2 channels versus 4 channels of reception. Or put another way does the Tablo input act like an unpowered signal splitter. That being when the Tv signal is split for two inputs the signal is divided by two. For 4 channels the TV signal is divided by 4. If the Tablo receiver has some internal powered splitter then there would be no signal loss for multiple channels.

    @@luiexluie After a couple of antenna missteps, we got a Clearstream 2Max antenna that we have indoors. It does pretty well but isn't quite up to receiving all the vhf channels consistently. There are heavy trees outside of the house between us and the transmitter location and I expect that four walls in our house between the antenna and the transmitter plus the neighbor's house are causing more signal loss. With so much content available via streaming our viewing habits have changed since we dropped cable. We don't really miss the four major commercial networks and can get PBS via streaming. To answer your question, we get 42 stations in Anchorage, Alaska. I just rescanned and picked up one or two of the vhf stations now that the leaves are off of the trees. What I remember from when I was setting it up is that there is some loss because of the four way split, but Tablo told me that a lot of it is compensated for by an internal amplifier. I really should get an new antenna, probably mounted outdoors, that receives the vhf stations better.

  • @carchi1

    @carchi1

    @@luiexluie While your question is understandable please realize that what one person receives most likely will not be what you get. It depends on a lot of factors like how many transmitters are in your area and how far you are from them, what's in the way, terrain, buildings, airport, etc. My tablo quad gets over 65 stations (some of them are audio only, foreign language, shopping, or just plain useless) but I live in Staten Island at about 85 ft elevation and probably 10-20 miles from most transmitters. YMMV. If you are in a weak signal area a good antenna becomes more important. Also do not underestimate the value of good connectors (waterproof) and a good coax cable!! Cheap poorly shielded cables have a lot of signal loss. Get the best cable you can afford and keep it as short as possible. RG6 Quad shielded cable is what I use. A good antenna and cable directly to a TV will give a better signal than going through a splitter. An amplified splitter after the cable run will also amplify any noise picked up along the run. If you need an amplifier, that should be at the antenna so as not amplify any noise along the cable run to the tuners but also realize that too much amplification can be bad as well. The tablo doesn't have to be near the TV. Depending on the type of house, the Tablo could be in the attic (if it's not too hot in the summer) with a short run of good antenna cable and then be connected to your internet router with a good network cable. The TV's will get the signals from the router via wifi to a roku, firestick or whatever wirelessly. You will also be able to get content to your laptop, tablet, phone, or anything that supports a Tablo app anywhere you have internet but check Tablo's device support first. The magic is having the right antenna and setup for your particular situation!!
