Table Mountain Overnight Hike - Sleeping on Cape Town’s Iconic Mountain!

We were privileged enough to hike and sleep on top of the fifth natural wonder of the world! Along pipe track, up Kasteelspoort, and adventuring along the top. Overnighting at the MCSA hut on Table Mountain, which is reserved for MCSA members. The next day we hiked down Skeleton Gorge to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
Cape Town consistently earns its reputation as one of the world's premier cities-a distinction celebrated by numerous global publications year after year. But what makes it truly extraordinary?
For many, it's the diverse mix of cultures bringing incredible art and music to the city; for others, it's the remarkable food inspired by this cultural fusion. For me, it's the stunning backdrop of Table Mountain, which looms majestically over the city and its pristine beaches. And for outdoor enthusiasts, Cape Town is a paradise. Whether you're into surfing, swimming, or hiking, adventure is just minutes away.
Each year, approximately 4.2 million people visit Table Mountain and the National Park it sits on. However, only a few attempt on hiking to the top of it and very few have the opportunity to sleep overnight on this mountain. That's precisely the opportunity we embraced-to hike and spend a night atop one of the world's most iconic and recognisable mountains, something I am incredibly grateful for.
Our journey started on a trail known as The Pipe Track which runs along the Western slops of table mountain and is renowned for its beauty and tranquility, considered one of the most enjoyable and easier trails in Cape Town, It offers views of Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles . Originally constructed to transport water from the back of Table Mountain to a reservoir in Oranjezicht but now channels water from Table Mountain's summit to the city's reservoirs.
After covering approximately 3 kilometres, we took a left turn, opting to ascend the mountain via the Kasteelspoort trail. This route offers hikers a challenging yet rewarding climb, marked by steep inclines and rocky terrain. Each step on Table Mountain's slopes revealed panoramic views, enhancing our sense of accomplishment. The rugged landscape, punctuated by an occasional yet easy boulder scrambles, heightened the exhilaration of our ascent, allowing you to forget how close you really are to the city and underscoring the mountain's raw, untamed character.
It's essential to address safety on Table Mountain, where, surprisingly, more fatalities occur annually than on Mount Everest itself. While this may sound alarming, the sheer volume of hikers on Table Mountain contributes to this. However, it emphasises the importance of mental and physical preparedness.
With that said, Cape Town boasts multiple world-class rescue teams that are highly trained professionals, often executing multiple rescues in a single day. And While it might sound unsettling, if an accident were to happen, you'd be in capable hands. Nevertheless, it's crucial to recognise the risks: venturing onto any mountain puts not only your life in jeopardy but also those of your companions and rescuers. I share this not to create fear but to underscore our collective responsibility and make you realise that you not only putting your own life in danger when hiking. Unfortunately, Table Mountain has seen its share of unprepared hikers, making caution, respect, and adequate preparation essential for all.

Cape Town is one to put on your Bucket list! You can be in the city picking up a coffee at a cafe and minutes later be in the mountains, and then in the clouds.

Colin, thank you so much for these kind words. This country is truly incredible, ny wish is that everyone could experience it, even if only for a couple of weeks in their life. In many ways, we are fortunate to live on the doorstep of this remarkable wonderland. We just need to look up, beyond the struggles perhaps, to see the promising view ahead, just as you wrote. Let's keep moving forward!
