T-Mobile Delays Launch of Away Plan for RVers and Home Internet Location Enforcement

Ғылым және технология

A couple weeks ago T-Mobile announced their new Away plan specifically for RVers, campers and nomads - priced at $160/mo for unlimited data. It was also leaked that enforcement of fixed location terms of the popular TMHI (Home Internet) plan would be coming.
Both were supposed to launch today, May 8 - but it seems to have been delayed.
Join us for what we know so far - and join us this evening for our next MIRC LIVE event, where we'll update with anything new, and share some alternative data plan options for our nomadic community.

    Thanks for the update. As a non-full time RV, I wouldn’t mind some sort of add-on to add to the normal plan on months when we’re going to be away, but having to switch the full plan back and forth would be a terrible experience.

    Its obvious they are delaying or going to restructure the Away plan because too many people are complaining about the price hike. Probably afraid of losing lots of customers and possibly getting sued.

    That could be part of the reason... but there also seems to have been a technical glitch that you could only get the plan if you had an address in a home internet location.

    I have not cancelled yet, but will if I get a letter. We are in FL for 6 months of the year. We own the lot and have XFinity there. We need internet year round because of our camera system on the lot and in the Motorhome that is there. When we travel (in our 5th wheel), we use Starlink mostly. If T-Mobile has a good signal, I will use it on my laptop and leave Starlink for TV streaming, etc. The only time that the R-Mobile signal has been fast was last summer when we are in western Colorado. Otherwise, we get 10MB down and even less up. We will be in PA mid fall. Here, T-Mobile is useless. Starlink for the win. So, T-Mobile is worth the $50 a month that I pay for it. It is not worth more. BTW: The big complaint around Starlink is trees. I do not park my RV under trees for a couple of reasons. Startlink reception is on the list, but not #1 or #2. Falling branches and tree sap are at the top of the list.

    Went to T-Mobile yesterday to check into this plan for using their wifi modem for streaming while on the road; while there, thought I would also compare overall cell offering vs ATT. For cell service, they looked at my ATT account and with my VA and multiline discount, they told me to keep my ATT plan; they could not beat my cost. (Elite Premium Unlimited= $100 a month+ taxes). As for getting the wifi modem for streaming at home and use in my RV, my address here in TX "is not available at this time"; same with my address in WY and Montana. Something to do with "grandfather" agreement with the areas, previous underground cable COX installed years ago, prohibiting them from selling to me, at this time. Crazy!

    I have a plan similiar to your ATT plan on TMobile.. it's their Military Plan. Sadly, they haven't offered it in a few years.. same thing.. 4 lines, unlimited everything.. $100/mo.. no deposit. It was a great plan, and I still don't know whey they stopped offering it. Thankfully, as in most things TMobile.. they don't force folks to change their plans on upgrade. So I'm expecting, and being told by TMobile directly, that the same will apply to TM Home CURRENT users.

    I contact the T-Mobile corporate sales and they were getting ready to go ahead and set me up with the T-Mobile away plan so we can take it with us as we go camping across the country. But they informed me in order to get this that my home address must qualify for regular T-Mobile home internet first in order to get the away plan. My address does not qualify for the T-Mobile home internet so this means I can't get the away plan to travel across the country. Totally ridiculous!

    Tmobile is just being cautious and it's smart of them. It sounds like their concern here is congested network areas. If they have multiple people sign up for the away plan it could cause them lots of problems. Imagine if groups of people who live in an area where the network is currently congested (and home internet was previously unavailable) staying home the majority of the time while using the away plan as their primary isp. Wireless customers would be affected because tmobile didnt protect their main custkmer base. That is not ridiculous, its self preservation. The home internet program was originally a way to monetize surplus capacity on certian towers. Typically home internet users use far more data than your average cellular customer. They don't want to compromise user experience with their primary customer base, instead they are protecting their exsisting customers and i appreciate them for that. It would be ignorant to kmowingly overload their systems and bad business on behalf of their loyal customers. Be patient and it will work out. This also explains their need for the away plan if some areas are becoming congested with home internet customers registered for use in a different area. Demand is higher in those areas so the price to access the "supply" goes up as well

    @@smiller6238 and that's why there's an issue with TMObile Home. TM mobile devices start getting data from Starlink satellites starting in July (proposed) as TM and Starlink have a new business agreement and upcoming merger. Who's going to buy Starlink at a $400-$600 start up price and $150/mo when you can get their data on a TM Home device for no upfront cost and only 40-60/mo? I know I'm not. But I know if they geofence me as an existing customer, even after telling me repeatedly they won't be, I'll be looking at Starlink as our internet option. I've met plenty of people who have SL and absolutely love it.

  • @MobileInternetResourceCenter

    @MobileInternetResourceCenter

    Ай бұрын

    At this point, there is no information of a 'merger' between T-Mobile and Starlink. They do have a partnership to broadcast cellular signal from Starlink satellites that will give low bandwidth access in areas without cellular signal - think more SOS level communications. This is proposed to go to cell phones only, not routers like the Gateway or mobile hotspots. And it certainly won't replace Starlink broadband service. Here's our latest coverage of it: www.rvmobileinternet.com/spacex-launches-first-direct-to-cellular-capable-starlink-satellites/

    So you think the price is high for the people that have been stealing from the company and hurting other users. But for real users by people not gaming the system show me another high speed plan that has true unlimited service that is not throttled. There is NONE. 150 gig a month at verizon is 80 a month, 100 gig at ATT is 90 a month. 160 a month is a pretty good, granted not as good as the people violating the terms of service and shafting normal users.
