I’ll tell you this, I’m a bus driver when I drove out there very rarely did kids get off the bus without saying “thanks drive” “thanks boss” etc. Be lucky to get any acknowledgment at all from Hills District and lower nth shore. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

100%!!! I used to work as a dancer in that area. The local boys were very courteous, always thanking me and were constantly apologising for their "excitement." Not like the Nth Shore slobs who were very handsy and smelled like KFC. Also, these local boys had very large wangs, but didn't brag about it at all. Wonderful people.

For anyone who’s unaware, the detention centre was actually built first. The state government decided money was more important than children, and then built a school on the land next to it. Generations of kids have grown up thinking that their destiny lies across the road.

Im born and raised in Claymore and what you see in this video is nothing but a shell of what it really was. The Claymore I knew used to be a tight knit community filled with big families (Alot of which being polynesian). We used to take great pride and were proud to be from Claymore. The world saw us as dirt and they couldn't be far from wrong. We may not have been rich in the sense of currency but we were rich with happiness . The same houses you see in this video used to have beautiful gardens out the front and back. Claymore shops was the spot you'd kick it at straight after school. Our Youth Centre was packed everyday until 5pm, they had Volleyball games in the carpark, Running up and down the tunnel walls (IYKYK) & the fields always had kids playing on them. Outsiders could never understand because all they did was judge a book by its cover however we saw the beauty in the imperfections. It truly was the best kept secret. Sadly the soul that claymore used to have died in 2014 and with all the area code nonsense that seems to be trending it never helped to revive what the community once was, it actually contributed to its downfall and what you see in this video. If you love your community heres some advice do positive things to contribute to it. Across the past 3 years alot of younger kids have used the Claymore name to gain notoriety but it was for themselves. Young adults started getting arrested thinking that it was all in the name of the “Hood” but what they failed to see is that the more arrest that were linked to Claymore only shifted things in to gear and speed up the process in destroying our homes by council. It hurts to see the state its in now.

I lived in Claymore through the 90's as a single mum. Just saw my old townhouse on your show across the rd from the shops. I agree totally with your sentiment of some sadness in seeing my past being obliterated. Yes the 90's were really bad living there, fire bombings, an axe murder, other murders, suicides, children murdered, child prostituition, drugs, dv, abuse, gross neglect & poverty etc. Watching as my neighbours' children burnt to death. I did finally get my family out. Good people tried to help the disadavantaged community but it was just a drop in a putrid ocean. It was all leased to single mums back then. Inevitably boyfriends would move in or partners return from gaol. A community condensed with dysfunction. I survived, my kids survived, there's still some scars decades later. But I always reckoned if you could survive Claymore back then you could survive anything.

I grew up in Minto (minno) and have tried to find online pictures or videos on how the suburb used to be before the houso was knocked down. I can't find anything so thank you so much for documenting this. This is living history and brings back so many good memories. New Years eve in Minto the main street would be closed off as everyone put out their old furniture, cars, bins etc. on to the road. These would then be burnt as a New Year's eve bonfire. Police didn't stop it, just redirected outside traffic.

I used to live in Appin because my sister used to live there and i worked for Inghams chicken…i travelled to and from Campbeltown for Centrelink when I wasn’t working but ended up on the streets then got a flat in Campbeltown bloody rough place but enjoyed my time in that part of OZ 🤘🏾met some good people this was 2016, Now i have my own place bought it right out up in the tropics in Townsville got my own car and living comfortably been clean from alcohol and drugs since 2018 and staying that way im only 47

I worked in Claymore for 7 years with Social Housing. Believe me, it is ONE place that needed ripping down! Children stigmatised and with no hope for the future. My sister also was a school teacher up on the hill there. So sad for the kids

I work in schools in Campbelltown. Worked at a school in Airds and currently near Claymore. I must say that the kids there are some of the the MOST grateful kids I have ever met.

I grew up in Claymore. It was a new suburb when I lived there in the early 80's and was 100% public housing. It was an absolute hole - but it taught me tolerance of others and respect for multi-cultural Australia. Thankfully my parents worked hard and we got out of there.

My pop said he was a weird bloke, and then it turned out he actually was. This was in the 80s/90s I think I also lived in Tahmoor for a few years further west of there. His nephew murdered one of the local boys David Auchterlonie in Belanglo state forest. Sent waves of hate for the Milat name in that area.

Alot of memories watching that footage. I was an Airds guy from 1975 to around 2008 on the street you began filming at. My family were original residents and stayed till their passing around 40 years later and life there honestly a majority of the time isn't what it is portrayed. There were the troublesome people, the deliquents and the drug and alcohol affected ones but a large portion were hard working honest people who went to work everyday and provided for their families. We didn't have the best of things but we were clothed and fed and given alot of things we wanted. Most neighbours did anything for you and my childhood friends are still in my circle of people i could trust. It's taught me great life skills and strong working ethics that continue today as a over 50 year old. Thankyou for doing this footage, it would have been great to have had it done before alot was demolished.

Crazy. I grew up around campbelltown and Eaglevale. Watching you guys walk past bits of my childhood and all the houses burnt out and abandoned is almost haunting... The part where you were going through the family photos hit me pretty hard. So many stories...

Dude I used live in South Wenty. I went to school in Seven Hills and I would need to run to the train station, hide, then catch the first available train at least three times a week. That was in the 90's. This random dude attacked me with his skateboard once so I had to crack him a few times in the face and piss off.

I'm a Claymore boy and almost fell into that situation. At the time, it was the most disadvantaged suburb in Australia, so getting a job was hard. Hence, why crime was so high. I was lucky enough to get a job through a friend. Now I live in Sutherland Shire and I'm a warehouse manager.

Raised our 3 kids in Claymore. People were scared to come out there. We never had any problems in Claymore. I could leave my car unlocked, motorbike in the driveway with no lock and it'll never get touched. Meanwhile my family out in the nicer areas were getting robbed. Met some nice families that we still stay in contact with after all these years. My kids all attended Blairmount public and EVHS and have grown to be 3 very successful adults. Pilot/electrician, Software coder, Barber/Music Producer. Sometimes good things can come from bad places. I wish I knew back then what I know now, in order to have been a mentor for the local youth. I'll always have a soft spot for Claymore and hope to give back to that community one day.

I grew up in Narellan Ended up becoming a HVAC-R mechanic and had the Campbeltown council contracts to look after all the neighbourhood centres, daycare centres, community centres and heaps of other public buildings all though those spots for many years. Lots of conversations with locals and community members. This was about 15 years ago, so alot has changed. It was awesome watching you walk around and connecting with everyone as it brought back alot of memories for me. I was told A lot of the housing commission projects and layouts that were adopted were based of American models. Cheers brotha

This ones gonna be crazy. I grew up and lived most of my life in Airds. Airds has changed massively over the years. Its in a massive shift. About 70% of the public housing has been sold off or knocked down. Give it another few years and it will not be recognisable. As a function of this, the population being so much smaller and less rough people it’s not anywhere near as bad crime wise as it used to be. It just looks a lot worse atm since it’s in the middle of a knockdown. Edit. @@b1gr1211 basically. I forget the original proposal, but the end was from memory only about 30% of houses would exist anymore in a public housing capacity. And I think the rest would be privately sold or knocked down and rebuilt. The original idea for the suburb was an American idea based around easy walkway through alleyways, and lots of communal ovals and spaces. Though what they ended up with was many avenues for people to run from cops and gather to get into trouble lol. In another 5-10 years it will almost look like some normal suburb pretty much.

As someone who grew up in this area, your video comes at a time when the suburbs are under demolition, yes years ago these areas were bad but as a kid growing here, we had a closeness like family, my parents moved here in 1979 an my dad is still in the same home today, alot of people dont choose to live here but its a place some have called home for many years

Airds, Minto and Claymore had public housing estates when I was a child. Minto subsequently got demolished and turned into a private housing estate (which is what they are doing to Airds (Newbrook Estate) and Claymore is changing too.

Called Bradbury home for the past 5 or so years of my life and spent most of that time working overnight maccas and driving uber around airds and claymore while studying during that time to make enough money to leave domestic violence, I grew up a lot in that time and have a lot of stories. A lot of good people who've just been dealt a shit card.

didn't expect to see you here in the comments. keep up the good work. heres an idea, look into the housing crisis in tasmania. the houses promised in 2014 not delivered, the money associated gone who knows where. whilst simulataniously selling off (and continue to do so) other public houses. and are now playing dumb on the whole matter, and advising that we buy our own houses (whilst paying ludacris rent. and god forbid if you are on any form of welfare, the wall of no's is crushing.) also look into the amount we homeless have to pay just to live in a shelter, here it is 85% for me that is 839 dollars a fortnight for a single room, with hot cold water, a fridge and a bed, and access to an internet that is unusable so i have to buy my own internet yaaay (and people constantly but hunting at all hours). any hoot have a good one.

My Aunty lived in Claymore almost 20 years ago. She had a heart attack and died cause the ambulance refused to come there. They said it wasn't safe for their paramedics to attend. Heartbreaking.

it is heartbreaking But a little fact, if it helps (i'm a Paramedic) when you get a cardiac patient, and.. Your aunty sounds like she was elderly. Mate, if more than 10 Minutes passes, the patient loses 20% change of survival FOR EVERY MINUTE THAT PASSES Campbelltown hospital (if your'e in the Ambo) to claymore , Takes 7 mins approx. By the time - You call Emergency Services - They put the call through (You suck up about 5 - 10 minutes, let's say 5mins there) - Say we are in another ward, Might take 2 mins to get to the ambulance if we run. we are now at 7mins it then takes 7mins to get to your place that's 14mins she now has 20% chance of being revived and if it happens, she has a 90% chance of brain damage if she lives. Now we need to get our packs out of the ambulance and walk into the place and you have to show us where she is that'll take around 2mins perhaps 30secs to a minute to pull out the Defib and slap on the pads we are at 16mins..... Unless there is a miracle, she's not getting revived. even if she does, Brain damage is guaranteed She didn't die BECAUSE the ambulance refused to come, She was already having a heart attack it would have been faster to put her in a car and drive her to the hospital Emergency and scream my Aunty is having a heart attack. She'll be taken in right away but with that scenario, you suck up 7 or 8 mins 2 mins to get her hooked up. Shes' got a decent chance of survival heart attacks are always dicey, Unless you have it in the hospital, then... it's not really a problem , 2 mins you can have that first shock administered.. NO PROBLEM Truth is.. even if they came, Honestly... (and my condolences ) it highly likely would have been the same BUT THEN... You'd be saying this.... I grew up in Macquarie fields, in a housing commission home, my mum worked very hard, working 3 jobs just to get us by. We had no dad and there was the 4 of us kids. My mums hard work finally paid off and after 13 years of living there we finally made it to private renting and moved up to qld. Where I was able to complete school in year 11 and 12 with better opportunities. Watching this video was like walking through memory lane seeing all the houses, the dirtbikes, commodores ripping skids, going through abandos and stuff.

I’m 60 years old. My dad was a builder and in the early 70s through to around 82 he built houses for the housing commission. As a kid I would sometimes go with him on weekends to building sites at minto, airds and other suburbs around Campbelltown. Entire suburbs of houso houses. When first built they were fairly decent looking houses and townhouses. They filled these places with young families. Families with very young kids. The idea was to give these young families an opportunity for cheap living while they worked to improve their lives. But sometimes the best of intentions go wrong. When all these young kids grew up it was in an atmosphere of unemployment and crime and alcohol and drugs. There wasn’t much work out there for parents. Most survived on the dole and family payments. These suburbs turned into ghettos. They were probably at their worst in the late 70s. It’s sad to see what’s become of these places but they couldn’t stay the way they were. I hope that the houses are empty because the people living in them have moved on to better lives. Anyone that grew up in these suburbs and survived mentally intact can hold their heads up. I currently live near Mt Druitt which was also bad in the late 70s, early 80s but it’s much better now. Entire suburbs of government housing was an experiment that failed but an interesting part of Sydney’s history.

this is what happens when you have good intentions, with cheap land, but don't consider the future employment prospects and critically, the transport connections to enable this. The policy 'designers' of this and the ultimate decision makers have lives and blood on their hands. They and the politicians who agreed to these isolated public housing 'solutions' should be bought to account. I think it's time for a proper inquiry into housing, public and otherwise, Royal Commission or otherwise, in this country. The housing crisis is just getting worse and major change needs to be made. It's been going on since the 70's!!!

people from these areas are usually much nicer and always 10x as real as those from the upper class areas. it’s a shame all the barriers in place that get them all stuck in the trap but it’s those same barriers that make them into the blokes they are. there’s always hope for change

Grew up in Claymore, lived in Ambarvale, lived in Airds, lived in Mt Druitt, then back to Claymore. Domestic violence, family train trips to Cabra for heroin, family day trips to long bay + silverwater. The overdoses, the deaths, the parasites (all types from pedos to scabies). The crime, the good times. Finally foster care showed me a plan on how to go out the exit door. Of them all, Claymore was my favourite. Sadly, my childhood home got bulldozed like so many others now. The tree we planted is still there. Shit, despite it all. Claymore was a beautiful place.

I grew up In Campbelltown in 90”s-2008, most of my family& friends still live there & believe it or not, the whole area, but esp Airds, Claaymore & Ambervale are pristine compared to how it was… Gov literally knocked most of it down saying “the areas were too rough”, built brand new housing houses, then put the same people back in them… Don’t try to make sense of it. Even us OG’s can’t 😂😂

I grew up in St Helen’s Park which is the next suburb from Airds and although Airds was probably rough to the outsiders, it was fun to us cause I had many friends that lived there and have many awesome memories and yes it’s sad to see it all gone but nice to see it getting cleaned up. from what I heard from family that lived in Claymore originally was, they are knocking the older houses down in Claymore and building newer, nicer ones and the tenants were given the option to return there when it’s completed or stay where they were relocated, so that’s why they have boarded the houses up and waiting until everyone in that allocated area has been rehoused and then they will knock them down and I’m sure they’re doing the same to some parts of Airds too

This video was really eye-opening for me, and something I always suspected was happening is. I grew up in the nsw country, then innerwest Sydney, then Syd Eastern Suburb Beaches, now back to NSW coast. Thanks so much for factually recording what our government is doing regarding this matter. ❤

I grew up in Eagle Vale, Claymore is a hole and I'm glad the filth are being moved. When Spanian talks about how sad it is that the housos lose their old neighbourhood he forgets that the neighbourhood was previously great and taken away and ruined by the housos.

What a genuinely good bloke. This guy is intelligent, thinks before he speaks, and speaks respectfully. Im not from this world, but I definitely see value in presenting these issues to a wider audience where they can be seen, discussed and hopefully given some legitimate solutions that work long term. As a society, we need to look after each other, otherwise we end up against each other. You're spot on! But alot of these people can't be helped, they refuse to help themselves, it's sad. I just hope the newer generations learn from this, and learn that this lifestyle doesn't serve anyone.

Worked for the housing for 10 years, our family all worked there in those places for 30 plus years. Probably the best time of my life meeting everyone there, 99% of the time they were good people making the best with what they had, the system has failed them by letting them get to 7 or 8 generations of the same thing.

Believe it or not when I lost my job and took up Uber eats in my local area (Glendenning/Plumpton) houses I delivered to in the Mt Druitt suburbs like Bidwill, Shalvey, Tregear, Lethbridge Park etc. would treat me with respect and even tip me. Compare that to deliveries to some of these middle class/upper class areas like Schofields or Marsden Park I got treated like I was second class citizen

My family was one of the first families to move into Airds in the early 70's. No bus service, isolation, but a relative peaceful existence. A volatile family situation led me to be put out of the family home and I found myself living in Mawson Park. Thank you Spanian for a great episode and the memories.

I was raised in Claymore from the early 1979 until 1996 .. I must say that till this day I still have my mates that were also raised in Claymore. It was packed with kids and ever looked out for each other. In 1996 we got a transfer to Cope St in Waterloo so I can definitely relate to both suburbs. Both areas taught me some fantastic fundamental life skills and lessons.. Thanks for taking me back…

I grew up in Auckland NZ and spent time in many different hoods there so when I went to Airds a few years back and all around campbelltown, I didn’t think anything of it other than it was the hood. When your so used to growing up around people who either need government assistance or people who were lost in the system, you understand that struggle, the long days with bare minimum - and so you have that connection to where it may be hard to believe but you can believe it because that was you, that was a past life. And this is why we have many lives in our one life not just the one we think we have

100% whanau. Another hood like home. What is always coming is the genuine nature of the people in the hood. Yes there is crime and poverty but that is the reality if generational trauma. No matter what race. Hoods are united communities that have governments and councils who don't listen enough to the community elders and leaders but more to corporate entities and proprieties who see the people in the hoods as a currency. You can always take a boy out the hood but you'll never take the hood out the boy. Humbles me to know where I came from

Honestly the nicest people there though. I spent 7 months there as a Mormon missionary knocking doors, and seriously the people were some of the nicest I’ve ever met. Always treated us with respect and we always felt safe.

I grew up in a rough part of Christchurch in New Zealand and I found that for the most part people don't shit in their own backyard. Most people were lovely and respected each other because we were all in the same boat, as long as you weren't addicted to drugs and you didn't owe money to the gangs you were safe ❤
