In the 90s Sydney was full of bike couriers. They used to congregate in Martin Place, sitting on steps waiting for work on two way radios. They all seem to be gone now. I guess email and PDF docs out them out of Business....

You know, we hear all the stories about these messengers (esp. on fixies) being a menace to everyone else on the road. While I admit there are messengers who ride recklessly (against traffic, without brakes, etc.), they are not wholly to blame. Both cars and pedestrians disobey traffic laws and common sense as well. Cars park in the bike lane, so riders have to use the road. Cabs open their doors in the middle of the street where it could easily hit a bicyclist or motorist. Drivers have road rage and purposefully antagonize riders. Pedestrians J-walk all over the street, continue to cross on red lights, and do not look for passing cars. I have even seen cars drive onto the side walk to pass traffic. It's easy to point fingers, but the road in the city is dangerous because all three categories (bicycles, AND cars, AND pedestrians) do not share the road responsibly. Messengers are as dangerous as they are now because the context surrounding city roads (including city politics and the companies they work for) has forced them to become dangerous. Ironically, it is exactly this blaming game that has divided the different travelers, making them forget to consider the well being of each other and making the road more hazardous. Post this below other fixie videos.

Yeah, it's changed a bit here in Australia. In my city (Melbourne) there's more & more bike lanes getting painted on the main roads as more people take up bike riding. Having said all that though, Australia is still a LONG way behind Europe when it comes to the public's & motorists acceptance of cyclists. A large percentage of car drivers here still get annoyed at cyclists on the road.

There is no way coppers can catch us on their slow ass mountain bikes when on our single speeds or road bikes.

is the situation still the same there? cuz it seems everywhere else in the world the major cities are more trending towards bike friendliness to combat congestion and pollution instead of fighting them to favour cars.

That seems like a good use of resources. Give a couple of couriers a fine while the drug trade and motorcycle gangs can run wild. I'm glad I don't have to pay taxes to support the NSW police force
