    There's been multiple interpretations of lightsaber lore over the years. Personally, I think it makes the most sense if the lightsaber blade acts like a normal sword, that can just cut through anything and doesn't bother with edge alignment. That's definitely what we see in all of the movies, TV shows, video games, and animated series. If it worked like any of the other explanations, we'd see a totally different fighting style.

    To be fair, I think the main reason Jedi and Sith still use it like a normal sword is because not only did they used to actually _have_ metal swords at one point and said training simply carried over, but they're also just playing it safe by using very restricted and disciplined movements on account of trying *extremely hard* to not accidentally fillet themselves into burnt chunks before the enemy even lifts a finger. 💀

  • @FirstLast-wk3kc

    Uhm. There is so much wrong here. 1. Katana is slightly curved, which already makes it much different, without pointing out that the mechanics of strikes are different, since touch is lethal and no edge alignment present. 2. It "cuts" different materials differently. There are resistant steels, but they are more rare, and there are super resistant bescar which is mythically rare. Durasteel is already not like a hot knife though butter, that's important.

    I believe the gyroscopic effect is supposed to do the opposite, making the lightsaber constantly try to spin and rotate. I think that bit of lore was intended to explain all the twirling, with the idea that it's difficult to keep one in a static position without the Force or just a ton of physical strength. Of course, this ignores how the original trilogy didn’t depict them this way at all. In fact, those movies had some of the most realistic swordsmanship in all the films, as the choreography was done by a British Olympic fencer named Bob Anderson.

Obviusly Jedi and Sith trained with lightsabers their whole life, they can wield even non-attuned ones, it's simply more difficult. Also, the only "accurate" lightsaber lore is the first one he mentioned, the second I never heard of, and the third has been made up by swords enjoyers trying to tell us how unrealistic cinematic combact is without knowing of the lore behind the in-universe weapon, not their fault for not knowing, but when making a video about something to educate someone it should be good practice to check your knowledge about the topic first.

Now there is so much content and it's such a vast narrative that arches over decades (and in some cases millennia) that it is hard to keep track and agree on "cannonicty". A part of that is because of audiences and their "ownership" of the content as fans and as a community. There is a lot of academic studies on how media and their fandoms interact and affect each other (took a whole class on it. Very intersting).

    Artificial Gravity Plating sure seems like a scifi concept and not a fantasy one. Star Wars is scifi, but scifi that also has fantasy elements and mysticism. That's not a totally unique thing. 40k's weapons (bolters, lasguns, especially) are likewise very similar to real weapons. Hell, we produced a gun basically that is exactly what a bolter is, firing rocket guided miniature grenades from a rifle, way back in Vietnam. The reason we didn't use them was because too much could go wrong. Its kinda funny that anything that isn't like, The Expanse immediately gets disqualified from being scifi, because there's _some_ elements that belong in fantasy. Sure, okay, granted. But there's a lot that belong in scifi. Moving faster than light by moving into a dimensional tunnel that burrows around planets and stars and obstacles is a pretty damn scientific scifi concept. The Force is mystical. Mother Talzin and the Nightsisters use the Force through magic. That doesn't mean Star Wars isn't scifi, its science, fiction. Hell, The Culture has a gun in it that instead of producing bullets, or lasers, produces bombs, dumps floods onto people, teleports them twenty thousand feet into the air. When pointed at a city, it will produce nuclear hellfire, or volcanic eruptions, or earthquakes, whatever it wants to destroy the target. Still a very solid scifi setting with a hell of a lot of hard science including AI so intelligent they outstrip the capabilities of a matrioshka brain as babysitters for the dumb humans who don't know what they're doing.

  • @jacobr7740

    @jacobr7740

    Жыл бұрын

    @@nuclearsimian3281 You raise some good points. But I would rebut by saying that there is more than one category of "science fiction". The term is actually super broad and doesn't really define the specifics of the genre very well. In academics at least, there are a number of different categories that all have distinctive features. For example, the category of "speculative fiction" deals with using science and fact to predict future technologies and sciences. A good example of this is 20,000 leagues under the sea - the book. It uses hard scientific fact to explain the existence of a monstrous submarine ship (at the time -1870- submarines were like 4 people max and couldn't dive deep). But in the novel Jules Verne envisions many future aquatic technologies like modern dive suits, spear guns, and the future of submarine travel itself. Another category what I would call, "true science fiction", also uses hard scientific evidence but remains set within the bounds of technology today. The best example I could think of now is Contagion. No need to really explain this one. It wasn't even speculative at the time (that was how bio-hazardous outbreaks were dealt with and what could happen if things got out of hand). The fiction of the film comes from the severity and dramatization of the narrative. Both of the above examples would be considered Hard Sci-Fi (where scientific fact is used as a narrative element), but Star Wars would be considered Soft Sci-Fi (which, again, vague term, but where the science is kind of thrown out the window in favor of the fiction) [think Star Wars, Star Trek, Blade Runner, Cyberpunk -although those last two are becoming more of a reality]. Star Wars would fall into the Soft Sci-Fi category of "science fantasy" (or more specifically "space fantasy"/"space western"). Nothing in Star Wars is based on any scientific fact. It's all techno/space mumbo-jumbo (like artificial gravity plating). It may have technology like lasers and engines and rockets, but nothing follows the laws of physics and everything is explained within the universe's lore and narrative. There is no real "science" happening anywhere. You mentioned hyperspace in your arguments... Within Star Wars it is considered science, but there is no evidence to back it up in reality. Furthermore, the Jedi, Sith and the Nightsisters are all referenced as wizards, sorcerers and witches harnessing a mystical power (all things found in fantasy, not science). The 'sci-fi' elements in Star Wars tends to lean to the space fantasy lore. Beyond the surface level "sci-fi" elements, the narrative structure of the movie (the first one from 1977) was far different from the "sci-fi" movies at the time. It was dramatic, and often operatic (especially with John Williams' score). In fact, I have a book that rewrites the original script as a Shakespeare play, and it works really well and is a blast to read. The film was revolutionary in nearly every consumer industry. Anyways, there is so much to say about sci-fi and too much to say about Star Wars alone. You are right, Star Wars is science fiction. I won't argue with you about that. But the term "sci-fi" itself is flawed in that it is too inclusive of films with few similarities between their science and fiction elements. I like to label genres and films more specifically, for example I like to at leasd distinguish if a film is Soft or Hard sci-fi . Sci-fi is a large and complex genre of film and media and I hope this helps to clear up some of the confusion. If you want to chat more about it I would love to. I like to hear how other people interpret movies and other media (and I can put my degree to good use ;p)

    Actually, both the blaster and lightsabers hitting each other have a reason, and it's the fact that they have magnetic fields! When 2 lightsabers hit, the have a chance to lock, as the fields entangle, they also repel blaster bolt for the same reason and they can't cut through electrified stuff! I’m a big fan of the idea that lightsabers do in fact have “sharp sides” meant for slicing and a “dull” side meant for blocking. Which is why sometimes you see the sabers bounce off of objects when hit or when blocking another saber and why sometimes they get into a clinch (two swords biting each other on the sharp side locking in battle). This also would explain why users who just pick up the saber without the knowledge aren’t very capable of using the blade. The only reason you aren’t able to see the difference in sides is due to the intense light and heat from the saber.

    The original lightsabers that they used on set for the special effects since they didn’t have computers they used a camera flash for the hilt and a metal rod that spun in it they then used lights to make look like I lightsaber that’s why in the old movies it flickers :) Lightsabers have no weight but have gyroscopic effect on them that makes it harder to swing but it’s not unwieldy that’s how the do lightsaber spins and fancy tricks work it probably feels like a heavier longsword but with out it pulling down also Jedi training probably has a lot to do with it as well because take in for example when fin used he was swinging very uncontrollably hope this helps!

    The in universe explanation is that it does indeed have weight. In fact its normally too unwieldy for anyone to use properly without force powers, think of it like a chainsaw, the teeth are meant to pull it into the wood for easier cutting, a lightsaber would have the same type of effect, essentially "Dragging" You however you swung it and taking just as much if not more force to stop Akin to stopping a hammer midswing. But if you have force powers and it's your lightsaber it will become easier for you to wield over time as your connection grows, that's why you see Jedi able to fight so gracefully and whatnot. While Sith appear to always have heavy handed fighting styles, probably because they're just forcing the lightsaber to do as they want so they feel the full weight of a Saber in comparison to a Jedi.

  • @jakeinator2005
    @jakeinator200521 күн бұрын

    Here's how I feel about the first and last ones. Starting off with the lighter of the two subjects, I think having the blade itself generate weight makes sense, as well as provides itself to more dramatic and climactic scenes using incredible sword play techniques. That last one however is the dumbest thing I've heard. I know lightsabers are powered by force-fueled kyber crystals, but you should still be able to utilize it. It just so happens the power source has a strong force energy. On top of which, we've seen a few examples of characters who aren't force sensitive wielding lightsabers. The reason why most non-force sensitives don't wield them is because without the force, you can use the deathstick, but you can't harness its full potential and use it efficiently. In other words, unless you don't have the powers or skills to back it up, don't bring a sword to a gun fight.

    its a blade of light that has a light mass that can glide through most materials like butter, except itself. It has its main amount of weight in the hilt, but the different handling techniques use either broad sweeping swings or precise small jabs to maneuver the beam around it's opponent. The beam is cylindrical, meaning no edges to hold on, which is why we see so many lightsaber duels bashing the beams against each other, because it is an attack and a defense at the same time. You don't need the force to use one, but Jedi Knights are force users and the Kyber crystals inside them have the force embedded within them, creating the iconic colors we know and love (Red, Green, Blue, etc.)
