Switchblade: A look at the drone the US is sending to Ukraine

Drones have been a vital part of Ukrainian efforts to fight off the Russian invasion.
Now the Americans have promised to send the highly-sophisticated Switchblade drone to Kyiv.
The Switchblade, sometimes called the Kamikaze, was introduced in 2011 - developed for US Special Forces in Afghanistan.
Rosie Laydon takes a closer look at it.

Switchblade 600s have the same warhead as Javelin. So you have a Javelin with a 25 mile range that is excellent for both offensive and defensive operations. Need thousands of these.

There is a lot of failures and corruption in the military industrial complex, and it is arguably more expensive than in house development. But it means you get the best designs and the most cutting edge weapons available. Imagine spending billions developing in house weapons system, only for a better system to be produced by a friendly country. It was humiliating for France. That is avoided when private companies take on the risk and you get to be the customer.

The great advantage of these over the previously supplied ATGMs is that if you have a satellite image of an artillery battery 10-15km behind the lines, then you can still send a bunch of drones and knock out all the guns which you can't do with a Javelin or NLAW at that range from the front line. If you knock out the artillery then the infantry can't attack without very high risk of being slaughtered.

Okay now this is good news. I wasn’t aware that when they were mentioning the switchblade drones before that they were actually referring to 1000 of them. When they announce they will be sending 100 units I assumed that just meant 100 switchblades which we all know wouldn’t be nearly enough which could be used up in just a week. But if it is true that that means each one of the units contains ‘10 switchblades’, then this will definitely make a huge impact on the enemy. These will be vital in the battle ahead in the Donetsk region. Thanks US for doing this. The UK is also going to be sending its own variant of the switchblade drone which should help as well. Yes it is definitely a big relief that according to this, it actually means the US is sending over 1000 switchblade drones rather than 100. As the earlier announcement made it seem like 100 units meant 100 switch blades. Apparently there are actually 10 loitering munitions per unit so that explains a lot. Just 100 switchblades wouldn’t be nearly enough but still could save some lives. If they can help in the battle to come in the Donbass they will make a big difference again a Russian tank onslaught. We need to make sure that they have arrived NOW.

The problem with systems like these is: who owns the relevant IP's for the weapon components. And how much they're going to overcharge because now they think they just hit the jackpot. The Javelin can mainly justify it's high cost because of the components and tolerance involved, these are obviously not so 'rocket science' but if they're not affordable enough, they become a problem. When we got our first Raven UAV's, we couldn't use them as intended because of their price, which was largely unjustified. It was a very, VERY cheap unit to build but with a skyrocketed cost. So BN HQ wouldn't let us use them at the platoon level.

The British army for examle use say the "Desert Hawk". They are for different purposes. He brags about how his product are way better than the "other annoying sales man" but he never actually have large numbers of the product in stock and ready to be delivered as soon as order comes in. At the same time hope that he will attract investors to invest into his product too. When or if he get buyers he want them "pay first" aka "pre order", once the cash is in his hands that is when he start making the product and deliver the product later. Now with the profits he might make something new or make a few more. I know USA does the same thing but we can say USA doesn't depend on WEAPON EXPORTING to fund the military.

There can never be too many of them shipped to Ukraine. These will be good to help drive the Russians from Eastern Ukraine. Then use them on the Russian soldiers as they try to come back. Does it have to the range to reach Moscow?

@@ranvijayrao4209 Russia is trying to kill everyone in Ukraine and sending missiles from Russia. How many people have died from Russian bombs and rockets. They launch them from Russia and Belarus and ships in the Black Sea. Why shouldn't Ukraine attack them back into either country or the ships in the Black Sea too. Hit the Kremlin with a few bombs and they would learn how vulnerable they are too. Putin is doing his best to copy what Stalin did to Ukraine in the 1930s. Kill millions of Ukrainians and take it over. Putin calls them Nazis and he's doing what Hitler did there in Ukraine.
