Swiss Watchmaking Is Over | Watchfinder & Co.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today is something I consider to be a bit of a milestone in watchmaking history. Two watches, both found at the peak of human ability, beauty and creativity, both demonstrating unimpeachable quality and artistry-and neither one is from Switzerland. Can the dominance of Swiss watchmaking as we know it really be over?

    Swiss dominance in the industry has been done. Obviously they'll still remain a huge part of watchmaking. They won't be the best watch makers at any price point though. When I had my rolex watches I noticed that all I really 'looked' at was the name rolex and I think that's the great trick. They've made such a deal of the name that you don't ogle anything else because there's nothing else to ogle. Now I have my GS watches I'm constantly in flux. One minute admiring the dial, then the hands, then the incredible case work, and it goes on and on. Rarely do I look at and admire the name. That, for me, is the mark of a truly great watch. If you can remove the name and it still look brilliant. The ALS and Credor don't need the name there to be amazing.

    Its more that the brand is targeted heavily for the Japanese internal market and not marketed in the west. The designs are almost entirely "arty", avant-garde dress watches and doesn't fit the aesthetics popular outside of Japan. Grand Seiko designs are more conservative/familiar and does much better in the west, so they have focused their marketing on that instead.

    As always, a very interesting video on the artistry of timepieces. Just a bit of FYI regarding the Credor and the dial technique. It's pronounced Mo - ku - meh and it translates to "wood grain", which is the pattern made by the folding over of the metals as in the folds of a Japanese sword. This would have been a more accurate example given the context, rather than Damascus. Gane refers to the gold of the dial. So...

  • @dimman77

    @dimman77

    3 жыл бұрын

    Mokume isn't made by folding. It's a single layered billet of individual sheets that is fired while wrapped in wire for tension to a temperature that the metals start to 'sweat' and diffusion bond. The billet is then removed from heat and struck with a hammer to complete the bond. Then it's cooled and treated like a single block of metal. Forged, rolled, etc... Textured unevenly it is then filed flat to create the pattern.

    Hi There, thanks for all your videos. I learn so much from these videos and even bought a few based on your recommendations on the channel. Just had a request if possible. I noticed when I was looking to by a GMT watch, I struggled so much to find any of the GMT’s that support 1/2 hr Time Zones. Even the great Rolex GMT master II only does full hr time zones. This seems like a void in the watch market or maybe I’m just not privy to it. I think it will be really awesome if you can may be do a video on watches which are able to manage 1/2 hr time zones. I know it’s not common but there are a few countries which have this requirement and will be a great video for knowledge. Thank you 🙂

    Amazing watches and nice videos. Quick suggestion, could you please make a video with the metiers d’art line from Vacheron Constantin. I think those watches design and production is incredible. Unfortunately, the price is quite high.

    4:38 -- (paraphrasing) "the battle can't be won by numbers, but instead another way... the Saxonia's weapon is perfection"... And we hear the narrator say this as we watch the ALS's rough-hewn minutes hand contrasted by the Credor's fully-finished-front-and-back minutes hand. ;-)

    Great video as always!! Fruit for thought... If you take a step back and look at the famous watchmaker's in the past and the present, the founder's of famous ''Swiss'' brands and today's ''independant'' watchmakers... There isn't many Swiss! (Except for a few like Philippe Dufour, David Candaux, Andreas Strehler or Antoine Preziuso...) Hans Wilsdorf founded Rolex in London, he was an Englishman of German origin... Patek was Polish and Philippe was French... Breguet was part French and founded his company in Paris... IWC was founded by F.A Jones, who was American... Jaeger was also French... Etc...etc... Basically, today as yesterday, Switzerland is stable place to be! I'm a huge fan of Seiko so I can't say much here other than they are amazing in every price range! The day they open a flagship store in Geneva, I'll quite whatever I'm doing and work for them with pleasure! Lange is probably one of the best brands money can buy at the moment however, bare in mind that it is owned by Richemont (just as you guys!) and the only reason why things are going nicely for them is because they are far from Geneva! Know what I mean? 😅

    The Credor dial is beautiful but the movement is obviously mostly machine-finished, it doesn't hold up under macro the way the Lange does.

    And then comes the several Swiss independent watchmaker like Jean Daniel Nicolas(or Daniel Roth) that surpasses both Credor and Lange. And yes, it goes both ways with Independent Japanese, German, English and Dutch watchmakers.

    This is one of the reasons it's difficult to compare watchmakers at that level. If one thinks Patek is the best manufacturer out there, it's a given that the person is not comparing Patek to Andreas Strehler, Greubel Forsey, or Philippe Dufour.

    Credor missed the opportunity to make the rear case threads so that the screws lined up in a circular pattern, like the Royal Oak front bolts.

    I'd be really interested to see Andrew do more videos about Credor! Vintage Credor watches can be obtained for relatively little money, but I really haven't got a clue on their quality. Anyone have some input on this?

    I have been into watches for prob about 10 years years now, and have known about the major players for prob twice that time. In that time i learned of A. Lange & Söhne and Glashutte. The Swiss have long since lost their "dominance", even before this speck of a human and his love of watches came on to the stage. Having said that i wouldn't kick a Patek Philippe out of bed if you know what I mean!
