In the German language Stutzen is a shortenend hunting rifle, it cames from the word gestutzt, not gestützt. But on these rifles the wooden handguard goes up to the muzzle.

If you are "still hunting", (as opposed to "hunting stills") i.e., sitting in a hide or a tree-stand, waiting for the hat-racks or epic wild boars to cruise by, the weight of a beast like that is almost irrelevant. Hiking in Matterhorn country with that thing would certainly raise the old heart rate. That "rimless"' extractor is a very nifty thing. I have seen "variations" on that theme in the small-framed Martini Cadet rifles that have been converted to .222 Rem, etc. Here in Oz, the other way to go in that cartridge, was the .222Rem Rimmed. Less "gun-plumbing" but only ONE source of "commercial" brass / factory ammo in those halcyon days of yore..

I also heard the theory that "Stutzer" comes from the verb "stutzen", meaning to cut back or shorten, because the hunting or sniping versions usually had shorter barrels than the target or line infantry versions, for increased handiness in rough terrain.

I don't have any photos to back it this up. However, during the great war there's lots of stories of wealthy guys bringing hunting rifles. One would have thing a Scoped Martini Enfield had to have shown up

The initial British sniping efforts by Hesketh-Pritchard et al were indeed based on officers bringing their scoped hunting rifles.

On Fieldsport Channel there is a segment made about Hesketh Pritchard Sniping school by his direct family member Charlie, editor and boss of Fieldsport Channel . A very good part that is,and some of his rifles is on the museum in UK. More scopes .303 rifles outside the SMLE and Parties was some Fallblock and Irish Guards H&H ..303 drop barrel rifle used in combat on W Front, and it is in Irish Guard museum. A good article online about it.

Back in the late 70s I remember the local shooting club I was a junior member of had a couple of these as club owned rifles. They were the first 'full bore' rifles I shot. Interesting to see some information about them, it brings back memories.

I'd move this to a scout rifle config and screw on a lighter barrel BUT I don't think I could get past the double set triggers and terrible lever. This presentation helps me to appreciate the Britishness of the Martini Henry.

I remember when I was a sprog I was allowed to fire a 5 round group from an elaborately stocked Martini action rimfire from a bagged rest. It genuinely went off when I closed the action firmly. The other 4 rounds printed into a nice ragged hole of course but that thing was wildly unsafe. 13:05

Isn't Stutzen derived from "gestutzt" (=shortened) not "gestützt" (=supported)? I always got the impression that Stutzen was more or less an equivalent to "carbine" or just short rifle, if not (like a carbine as we understand it to-day) a shortened version of a long standard.

It comes from a time when the vocabulary was less standardized than it is now, ie 16/17th century. In german-speaking countries, there are generally 2 kinds: Feuer/Scheibenstutzen, as in this video. They were used for competitions up until about the 1930's when the NSDAP standardized all shooting competitions to .22lr rifles and Wehrmann rifles, basically K98s in 8,15x46R, which was the usual caliber for Scheibenstutzen outside of Switzerland before. The 2nd, Jagdstutzen is more closely to what you mean, a fully stocked hunting rifle, like the Mannlicher-Schönauer Stutzen for example, which is the one of the two thats much more common nowadays.

@@nunyabidniz2868 As per familiy names, "Stutz in Upper German from names like Stutzer and Amstutz (Switzerland) = the one who lives on the Stutz (on the steep slope) (documented Stutzer = Amstutz around 1600 in Klein Engelberg). But compare Middle High German stutze "wooden vessel of blunt form" or "Stutzbecher" and Middle High German Stutz "stoß i.e. shock"."

Alright, the good idea fairy just struck. How about a hilarious mix of old and new. Carbon fiber barrel in 6arc or maybe 6crd, lightened wood furniture, short lever. Light weight MH stalking rifle? This is probably a niche gun haha.

On the ridiculously light trigger, I read in one Schuetzen book that to maximize sensitivity one would grow their trigger finger’s finger nail out long and pull the trigger with that. Perhaps give that a go!

Imagine shooting a rifle with a forceful reset like that, ouch!

I have two of these in.7.5 Swiss one with the GP90 chsmber,the other the GP11 chamber. The GP90 chamber throat will allow a .328 cast bullet and is the most accurate with this diameter. The GP11 chamber shoots well with smaller cast bullets, the same the K31. prefers of course. in the USA Steve Earle makes a base that clamps on the rear barrel dovetail and allows the use of Unertl/Lyman style target scopes and is a very good looking option and gives better access to the chamber with the smaller rear end of these scopes.

I have one that started out as a martini Henry then become a martini enfield then was sporterized to 303-22 as i bought it. Ive since rebarreled it to 50 Alaskan and I load 1030gr cast and 730gr 510cal ball through it on smokeless it has a side mounted leupold 1.5x5.

I really want to turn up a Martini-Enfield or Martini-Metford rifle here that isn't either a Khyber Pass or in absolute rag order. Thus far, no dice. I can absolutely fill my boots with various Swiss Martinis in 10.4 Vetterli and the two 7.5 military chamberings though (particularly the GP90, GP11 ones are a bit scarcer).

@@BlokeontheRange The swiss government helps swiss rifle clubs abroad with free rifles and ammo.Although not swiss we lent 300 metres to a local swiss club on out farm near Russledale in southwestern ontario canada It lasred for 40 years till 2015. The best thing growing up was the free rifle and lots of ammo most marches were on sundays

As always nice informative vid. My favourite 30kg of rifle, mine is in 22lr😂. A beast but very nice to shoot. I thought about a scope but one of the almost as long as the rifle jobies😂.

I’d take a step further and put a massive sunshade on the scope extra tall turrets Harris bipod and skateboard tape on it.

Stutzen means as i know it, short rifle,often used for full stocked rifles .

Btw, the rifle in question is extremely similar to this one, the stock is a bit more dropped with a huge crescent moon butt, the wood is nicely engraved as is the barrel and it's got express sights like an African safari rifle. Dunno the calibre but it won't be GP11 as it's an obsolete calibre gun in the UK. It's really damn heavy, at least 12lbs. It's been in there for damn years. The guy who runs the antiques shop specialises in British and German WW2 stuff, so he has the odd civilian or American item he doesn't know much about. When I asked about this rifle, he said it was an "obsolete calibre hunting rifle, either Swiss or Austrian" and it was £800. Seen as I collect European military gear, particularly antique guns and airguns, helmets, armour, bayonets and fighting knives, jackets, hats and military books/manuals, I didn't give this rifle much thought. I'm more interested now I know what it is, but I'm still not gonna buy it, it's too expensive for something I don't actually collect myself. If I had £800 I'd get the Beaumont-Vitali from the same shop, not the Jagdstutzer.

I don’t know about Swiss terminology but as far as I understand "Stutzer" = "Stutzer" = a short(ened) rifle (cf. "stutzen" - to shorten or cut down). Of course what is considered short is relative but for the time that could be the case for your rifle. Definitely compared to a military rifle.

The stutzen gets ist Name drin the Verb stutzen. It means to cut down and is normaly used to Discovery Short hunting guns. Maybe the evolved from such guns

As all the people who have owned this have left their stamp on it are you going to alter it to your spec ? .I would reduce the barrel down to 22/24 in and remove the odd leaver and replace it with a simple one.personal choice but I don't think I can live with the brass mateing snakes as my fingers would be investigating them rather than concentrating on the target 👍

The Henry of Martini-Henry was the style of rifling the army adopted, right? I'd love a Martini action , or a Remington style rolling block as a hunting/casual target rifle! Single shots are fun, IMO....makes you focus on your marksmanship! 😃

@JohnTBlock it's not a rolling block or martini but another much more affordable (and still beautiful in my opinion) single shot it the brass frame Henry single shot. You can usually find them for under $600 out the door and come in .45-70, .44 mag, and I believe .30-30. It'd still be several months of saving up for most of us but it's a lot more achievable
