I think crowdsourcing and using the hive mind of the internet is only way to get the project finished. So far all the fan-fic chapters have totally exceeded my expectations. I mean, total plot-twist on George. The internet finishes his books for him. It raises a lot of legitimate questions about the future of writing as an art. And we are back. Yes, that Hotah chapter was absolutely incredible. The Daenerys chapter was as well. Don't be too hard on yourself. This is a new project, so testing the waters will inevitably happen. Writers must be getting more and more comfortable with the process and maybe the pressure of knowing that *a lot* of people will be consuming their work. It was a great chapter, especially for a first. As you go along, the chapters will be more refined and engaging. Great start, though. It was a good idea not to start with the Prologue, because that may have be more difficult since it does not ever have as much momentum as a chapter from a character we already are familiar with, making it easier to get comfortable and experiment with. Less pressure. Originally, I hoped to have the viewpoint character in the Prologue be the Blackfish and have him be involved with Jeyne somehow, Robb's heir, and laying the foundation for a civil war among many other things to come in this book. Your idea for the Prologue is incredible, though, so I will go with that. And new characters may have to be introduced and the Others may have to be mentioned or hinted at, they most likely will be south of the Wall in this book. I also forgot about Maester pattern in the Prologues. Thanks. Let's go! 💗

A civil war seems like a big plot point that can’t be rushed and unnecessary considering what everyone’s goal is right now, seize the iron throne.

    This project reminds me of a bit in the novel 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency'. In college, Dirk convinced everyone that he had psychic powers, and made money "predicting" the questions that would be asked in the final exam. In reality, he just took the previous years exam and made educates guesses on what changes There'd be. Through sheer coincidence, he predicted the test with 100% accuracy, down to the typos, and was expelled for cheating. I'm just imaging that Preston and the fanwriters are going to be so close to the real Winds of Winter that people will assume there was genuine espionage involved.

    I think GRRM once said that the seasons are screwed up for "a magical reason," but I can't provide a citation. This has been said before, but the Southron Ambitions conspiracy could have been even more ambitious in its conception: Lysa Tully almost married Jaime, Cersei would have married Oberyn if Tywin hadn't prevented that, Elia might have married Baelor Hightower, and Alerie Hightower married Mace Tyrell, so the maesters' original plan was to unite all eight of the most powerful Houses in the land against the Targaryens (assuming the maesters were really doing anything at all; a glaring weakness of the conspiracy theory is that marrying Lyanna was an idea Robert came up with all by himself, and he asked Rickard for Lyanna's hand rather than the other way around - or so the WOIAF app suggests). I think we need a lot more information on the Spicers and Maggy the Frog, since Cersei's story kind of demands it, and we are starting on the assumption that Maggy was a more mundane sort of fortune-teller who just did a cold reading on Cersei, rather than predict the future with a degree of accuracy that Melisandre, Quaithe, and the Ghost of High Heart would kill for. Kevan hints that Lord Gawen married Sybell to preserve her honor, the same way as Robb married Jeyne: "𝘎𝘢𝘸𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘮𝘢𝘯, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘚𝘺𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘳. 𝘏𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘳. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦." - Tyrion III, ASOS and Jaime thought something interesting once: "𝘑𝘢𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘎𝘢𝘸𝘦𝘯 𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘧𝘦'𝘴 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘥𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸?" - Jaime VII, AFFC One other thing - Sybell must be really pissed off at the Lannisters over Raynald's apparent death, plus the whole joy/Joy misunderstanding, plus Castamere not being a very advantageous lordship, plus feeling that after she did the Lannisters a huge favor, Jaime and Tywin were pretty ungrateful about it. "𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘎𝘢𝘸𝘦𝘯 𝘯𝘰𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘴 𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘚𝘺𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 [Jaime] 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘤𝘦." - Jaime VII, AFFC

    I always found the Maester Conspiracy to be he one of the worst theories in the fandom. Such a large organisation, with their level of technology having a single unified secret goal is very unrealistic imo. Also yes, while someone has come up with a fully scientific reason regarding the seasons with orbital mechanics the word of god from George is that the seasons are magical. Great comment pointing out the Spicer/Westerling stuff otherwise.

  • @JELazarus
    @JELazarus2 жыл бұрын

    It would be cool if Maester Jon has his own idea and research into why the seasons are the way they are, but decides to present a DIFFERENT theory to the Citadel, because he fears his explanation will be problematic to the Citadel's chosen narrative. His goal is to return to Oldtown. Being right can be secondary to Jon too, not just the writer. I think this provides a bit of a parallel to our modern world, and it finds a way to incorporate "modern" cultural ideas and dispel the notion that this is indeed a phenomena unique to present day. It also gives Jon a bit of depth of character, which can make for a greater impact when he ultimately perishes.

  • @jonttopia
    @jonttopia2 жыл бұрын

    Really great ideas for the prologue. Regarding the explanation for the seasons, important to keep in mind that it should not be framed as "why are the seasons weird" or honestly not even "why are the seasons irregular". For any normal human there's nothing wrong or weird about the seasons, they have always been that way for these people. A likely starting point for a maester would be something like "what causes the seasons to change" or "what determines the length of the seasons". It might be obvious but I just wanted to point that out. As for what the explanation could be or how he would discover it, that's difficult. He could have an astronomy focused and spend time stargazing (which could open up the possibility for him to be mentally influenced via the moon). A lot of his research would be pouring over old books, looking for patterns like positions of stars and the sun and moon during different seasons. While he might include magic in his hypothesis, it should be based on observations and not myth and such. If Jon is a young maester he also probably hasn't had the opportunity to study many seasonal transitions in detail and should be pretty excited/stressed about having a prime opportunity to study the shift from autumn to winter. I would have his last page be him excitedly stargazing during a full moon (if that lines up with the timeline) and comparing his observations to his notes. He realizes some pattern that could explain earths orbit or similar, and then he slowly starts feeling as if he's being watched until suddenly his mind is attacked and seized, similar to Varamyrs chapter but reversed. His finding could also prove something other than he thought, perhaps he realizes that some of the stars can't be stars because they move irregularly and back and forth.

    A point about the origin of the strange seansons: 1) On earth there are seasons because of the Earth's axial tilt relative to its orbital plane. If Earth's axis was perfectly perpendicular to that plane there would be no seasons at all. Earth's axial tilt is about 23°. The higher the tilt (max = 90°), the more extreme the seasons become. 2) Earth's axial tilt is changing over time due to the gravitational influence of other planets. Luckly for us because of Earth's extraordinarly large moon those changes are small because the Moon helps stabilize Earth's axis. Mars for example is believed to undergo huge changes in axial tilt over time because of the lack of a large moon. 3) It is mentioned that days grow shorter during winter which only can come from axial tilt just like on Earth. So my suggestion is the seasons originate from a strange axial tumbeling of Planetos' rotational axis. Maybe there are some massive planets in the Planetos System than influence its axial tilt and maybe those planets are in some weird kind of ressonance and special allignments, occuring every hundrets or thousands of years cause extrem axial tilts and thus long summers followed by long winters. PS: I am aware that GRRM mentioned the explanation for the seasons is NOT scientifical but if it were I feel like this could be one

  • @IngTomT

    Just an additiona random thought: There might even be a black hole in the Planetos System on some kind of highly elliptical orbit that interfers massively with Planetos' orbit and axial tilt when it is closer to Planetos' main star which only happens every some centuries/millenia or so. Maybe the maester has found out that Planetos orbits its main star but something still doesn't quite fit, there must be something elese, the black hole, a dark star as he believes. Then the red comet could also be a sign the dark star has come closer, as it had disturbed it in its orbit while approaching the inner regions of the Planetos System.

    Legends say there were two big moons on Planetos. If we take it literally and suppose that one of them was used to hatch dragons and basically was destroyed... It happened who knows when, but definitely not too long ago on the astronomical scale. So maybe seasons are irregular because the system was thrown out of its equilibrium state and didn't find the new equilibrium yet?

    Another crucial point to consider would not only be axial tilt but also axial precession. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axial_precession In order for seasons to last longer than a year (= one revolution around the star) the precession of Planetos' axis must be really fast. It takes Earth's axis over 20,000 years for one precession cycle. For Planetos it must be much much faster, in the order of the period of a year. If Planetos' precession cycle was for example 2 years, summer would last 1 year and winter another. If it was 1 year, summer or winter would last forever, so it should be somwhere in between and it must change as well to have variable lenghts of seasons.

    thank you for explaining this because I was thinking something similar. Earth's axial tilt can also drift due to changes like ice melt or water shifting across the planet. Maybe changes on the planet's surface in ASOIAF could cause irregular changes in drift over time. If there is a magical explanation, I think about how the Others 'bring the cold' and might somehow affect the composition of the planet's surface and its axial drift. Then there's the opposite force of fire & dragons. Two moons is also a cool idea

    I don't know if this will help anyone at all, but it may help to explain the weird seasons. I've always thought the Planet ASOIAF takes place on as shaped like a football rather than a sphere like Earth. It would explain why the Valyrian woman, Jaenara Belaerys while on the dragon Terrax, flew for 3 years over Sorthoryos and never got to the other end of the land mass. The North/South direction would be a lot longer than going around the East/West direction. I feel this would also lend credence to the idea that the Grey Waste connects to the frozen lands beyond the wall around the East/West direction, or the width of the football. Perhaps this could also explain the strange seasons? I dunno how that stuff works, but we can apply fictional science here :)

    Preston, are you familiar with the work of Brian W. Aldiss? Some people speculate that George was heavly inspired by the Universe Aldiss created in his magnum opus "Helliconia", a sci-fi trilogy about a secondary world who has a double-star system where seasons last hundreds of years, and this astronomic situation is the main device that leads all the plots in the story. Just in case any of the writers are interested, it could serve as an inspiration when explaining the climate.

    Loving the chapters this project is putting together. This prompt seems a bit weird to me though. The protagonist not being nailed down, I mean. Seems like that would be a pretty major hurdle. Like if two different contributors write two versions of the chapter that are both exceptional, and the editors want to work them both in, but one used Maester Jon while the other used some other character. But I guess that's what the editors are for, so it might just make their job a bit more challenging. Can't wait to read this one!

    Assuming the Maester dies in the chapter, it would be funny if he uncovers some Grand Conspiracy but is killed as a result of some argument over why the Seasons are messed up (possibly a religion v science thing - maybe with one of the Sparrows). That's how I'd write it anyway.

    I’m very curious to know how many writers are participating on average? It’s hard to guess whether it’s like 5, or 100 people sending in submissions. It will also be interesting to see down the line if this effort coalesces into a more streamlined, core group of writers who particularly excel at this type of project.

    Otherwise no notes about the previous chapter (all in all it was friggin' awesome) but one thing that stung into my ear a bit was the lamp shading on lot of the stuff Preston has made videos about over the years. I don't mean to say don't do it, i actually think bunch of it is gonna make interesting as hell of a story. I just think you guys should try to spread it out bit more over different chapters and try to avoid making it as obvious as it ended up sounding. Granted, as an avid Preston watcher that thing might register bit more than for a normie, but either way, i think making a chart or something and then peppering the pertinent lore and plot info out would probably end up sounding much more natural.

    Hey Sweet Robin, kinda need to know where the book is going in the end of the book as it deals with the Prologue In other Books we foreshadowed Ice to Fire Stannis and the red woman becoming a major players and the use of poisons The derision at the wall and the eventual new lord commander The use of glass candles and the faceless men at old town And how cannibalism warging and death all work for bran and Jon So what’s the big thread? Is there a pregnant Jayne that related to a crisis at winterfell and who is the heir ?

    All this world-building in the Westerlands is certainly intriguing. Maybe we should create a new POV in the Westerlands. I know GRRM said he won't be adding any new POVs but we don't have to follow that rule. Since this is all online we can make it as long as we want.

    What if instead of a theory on the seasons, maester Jon’s theory is about the massive cataclysmic events that seem to occur every 300 years; Hardhome 600 years ago, Valeria 300 years ago, perhaps the flooding of the neck, the radiation of the red waste, etc. After all, a scientist saying that we are past due for a cataclysm might be given lead to pursue his studies wherever he wants. This might pair well with the Fire and Ice poem. Will the planet end with a long night or by another firey doom of Valeria situation.

    It would be a more creative narrative to have a septa instead of yet another maester as the POV. There can be more one on one with Jeyne Westerling and her take on what her mother did. It still allows for a young maester who drones on about the weather patterns. The death can still happen to Maester Jon as there's no requirement to kill the POV during the POV chapter.

    Vance has only two basic character types (he uses to great effect) that I call “yin” and “yang”. “Yang” types are generally protagonists and they are generally very sincere and principled, single-minded, determined, decisive, frank, honest, and direct, even blunt in speech. “Yin” types are generally everyone else in the story, and, naturally, opposite the yang types: they have layers of motivations, may be deceptive (though not necessarily maliciously so), they are more pragmatic, or following some secret principle, likewise their decision-making is either complicated or forgone, and they generally speak in an comically roundabout, ironic, ornately formal, and baroque fashion. Yin types may frustrate or betray the yang type, but they also aid and counsel them, and it won’t be obvious if they are trying to be helpful or not. You can count on them being self-interested.

    (I think the story you’re setting up sounds like it could be pretty Vancean in that a sincere and forthright character is baffled and betrayed by more elliptical characters and might unintentionally doom themselves in taking direct action without understanding the actual circumstances.)
