Tyrion I, TWoW (Sweetrobin's The Winds of Winter Fan-Fiction)

Ойын-сауық

Tyrion I, reconstructed, based on fan reports. It's difficult to have a chapter where nearly nothing happens, especially when a clever dwarf is the star.

The diversity of the Meereen storyline is hella underrated. You got Summer Islanders sailing with maesters, Dornish princes taming dragons, Westerosi Knights training Lhazarene and Sothroysi squires, Ghiscari slavers fighting Ironborn reavers. You really get a sense of just how *global* the war over slavery has become.

Wow, I just gotta say, I LOVED this. The switches between Tyrion playing his pieces in his game of cyvasse and him playing the Second Sons in his game of thrones is so well done. And I love how all of it ended with the same bluff, in both games; Tyrion trying to convince Brown Ben that the Dragon is the most formidable of all and Brown Ben should just concede, even if it seems like he has other options. As for the ending, I'm actually curious if the Ironborn truly ARE flying Targ banners though, or if Jorah is playing his own bluffing game as well. Tyrion believes Jorah to be paranoid when Jorah says he sees a kraken, but we KNOW in the Barristan sample chapters one of the squires tells Barristan the ships are indeed flying Kraken banners. Perhaps they're flying both? I just can't bring myself to see the misogynistic Victarion taking the trouble to fly a banner for a woman he has essentially told us he plans on raping just to spite his brother. Personally I think they're just Kraken banners and Jorah and Tyrion both playing their own game of throne thru their bluffs. The Ironborn and Targ sigils don't look THAT different, and since it seems like no one else in the Second Sons can truly see them at such a distance it wouldn't be all that weird for Jorah to bullshit this and for people to just believe him. I also LOVE the setup for the Battle of Fire, since we know in the Barristan sample chapter he tells his troops to 'head towards the Targaryan banner when you hear the horn,' and we know Victarion is ALSO planning on blowing a horn. Even if they're NOT really flying Targ banners, people might head towards the Ironborn anyway since they can't see or distinguish things properly on the battlefield, and they might do this when the Ironborn blow their horn, not when Barristan does it. Super Curious how that will play out, and who will benefit from it.

After the most recent podcast, it is painfully obvious just how slow Tyrion's chapters are. You're right, Preston--the prose if beautiful! It's gorgeous and painstakingly crafted, with every sentence working to demonstrate 1) how smart and/or fucked up Tyrion is 2) the exchange of power between conversationalists 3) echoes of the past in the present or 4) some really pretty descriptors. But holy shit, is it is all pointless as we wait for the action to start.

Since I started wondering if Winds would actually come out at all, years ago, the only thought that would silence my qualms was this: "If George doesn't write it, the ASOIAF community will". But then a different doubt would pop up in my mind: will it be any good at all though? And this chapter was the answer: "Without a shadow of a doubt". You have my absolute trust, Preston. I know you will keep up the phenomenal job.

@@naponroy Yeah but that means Preston had an outline to work with and the actual text/prose is still by the fans. And while plotting a story out is a very important part of writing a story it is generally the easier half compared to actually writing something compelling. Coming up with a plot and organising it in a way that makes sense isn't easy, but still a lot people can list a series of events. Actually writing the rest is what makes a story a story and is not something easily done.

The one where the Yunkish messenger tries to convince the Son's to mount an attack on the approaching ships, and Ser Jorah ultimately kills him, takes place after this one. Preston really wanna get your opinion on this. What would you think of revealing in the fanfic that valyrian steel weapons dont work on the Others? I think it would be incredibly surprising to the audience who already believe valyrian steel will be effective, because of the show and a referenced "dragon steel" from a book Samwell was reading. I also think it would be kind of amusing considering Targaryens(believing themselves to be prophesied heroes) held their valyrian steel in great regard. Maybe the weapons arent THAT special, they're just really good steel, strengthened by some kind of psionic smithing method, possibly involving a sacrifice.

Why are these being reposted? Every time I see one I think it's a new chapter in the fan fiction project and get excited. Then get let down when I click on the video.

it's not a repost. It's a new chapter based on fan reports of a reading GRRM did of Tyrion I

Tyrion has been fairly useless if you get right down to it. He's done two major things of value. The chain and wild fire at the battle of Blackwater. The second was kill Tywin. He's just been wondering around the world at this point. Doing nothing of actual value. I feel like George needs to kill him and be done with it. This is not said with any malice. I actual like him, but at this point. I don't see what his arc is at this point. It feels like it has run dry or is lacking direction.

You might be right or this could be one of the worst cases of filler in literature. So that would mean George has an idea what to do with Tyrion yet he thinks he needs more time to describe what happened before. I mean, George had wanted to do a five years gap. He should have done it. Then he wouldn't have to concoct these Tyrion chapters - he could have started The winds with Tyrion already in Meereen. And then you wouldn't need to have two POV chapters dedicated to describing Volantis - I mean, Tyrion's and Quentyn's. Both chapters in DwD, of course. Even if Volantis is supposed to be defeated and/or destroyed by Daenerys - who would give a dam about it? And, let's suppose that tigers overturn elephants or there would be some kind of revolt against both factions and slaves overturn the masters making an alliance with Daenerys - who would really care?

He could come in handy as an exposition tool or something

you should just retcon Tyrion out of the story if you think he's pointless

That would contradict the existing sample chapters.

Honestly, excellent chapter. What's really funny is after your Tyrion rant with Carmine I can absolutely see how you could combine Tyrion I and II into one chapter. Did we really need 2 chapters where Tryion tries to convince Ben to flip? Tryion II could have been one page finishing this chapter PS: Daario is not Euron, literally 0/10 disliked and unsubscribed
