I’m almost certain you’ve heard of the pentatonic scale, right? You’ve probably even played it on your bass once or twice (or a couple of thousand times…)
Well today, I want to share a new way of using the pentatonic scale on bass to make some super cool music.
It’s one thing to just run up and down the scale - there’s nothing wrong with that at all - but the sweet pentatonic exercise you’ll learn in this video will have you jumping around the pentatonic in a very unique way.
Doing this gives the scale a different ‘contour’ that makes it stick out from everything else you might be playing. That makes it perfect for:
► Creating fills that ‘pop’
► Adding spice and flavor to your improvisation
► Even creating new bass lines (if that’s what you want to do)
You don’t need tons of technique or loads of music theory knowledge to use it either. You can get started right away.
Of course, this exercise works best when you have a decent handle on the pentatonic scale and the 5 different positions that you can use. If you need a helping hand with that though, I’ve got you covered - just check out this video:
• The Pentatonic Scale F...
And you’ll be blazing the pentatonic scale all over your bass in no time at all.
Of course, if you’d like the tabs, notation and backing track from this lesson, that’s available as a free download. You can get them all by filling out the form on this page:
becomeabassist.com/sweet-pent...
Good luck with the exercise! Give it a try the next time you want to play a fill or spice up your improv a little bit.
Cheers,
Luke

Thanks Luke for your lessons without editing the errors. It help us to feel comfortable with our practice when we make errors we just need to keep practicing without feeling like failures. Thanks for being REAL with us. Bless

Luke again thank you so much, I have been playing bass since 1980, mostly by ear, took lessens from a guy from our local college who played in the JAZZ ensemble, well I have picked up a lot on your video's, you know the bass is so much a part of me , like a drug, God bless you and keep up your killer videos,🙂✌️🎸🎸🎸🎸
This is what I'm talkin' about! Thanks man. Now it's time to practice 👍🎸🤘
This teacher is the best out of all the bass teaching guys. He goes straight to the point, consistently gives quality exercises with visual cues and tablatures, no bs and no vlog introduction. Cherry on top, he's quite the stud😳 making these vids a pleasure for both my eyes and my ears LOL😇😇😇

Please correct spelling to stewartalford (no d in stewart, descendent of Scots!). Sorry to trouble.
Loving these theoretical tricks. Just wish I could actually play the darn thing!

It's just a matter of practice, and this exercise is definitely worth practicing, Adam. You'll be surprised at how melodic you can be as you get hold of the notes in each minor pentatonic scale. Then do the same thing with the major pentatonics. Go slow. You'll get it.

Appreciate your help 👍 added
Light bulb moment this morning having by chance seen one of your videos Luke. I am currently on, and soon to take Grade 5 Bass with Rockschool. In the Virtual Exam....you have to play 50 Scales and Arpeggios. (Dull right), but the big thing that gave me this REAL break was ALTERNATIVE fingerings. All these you have to play in G Bb C D, = Major, Major Alternative, Maj Pent and Alternative and so on.....these really link to this lesson to get people up and down the frets 🤣
Sounds great 👍

Love this.... I like the way you explore and play with the patterns. I also think it is GREAT you leave the bits that aren’t perfect in the take... makes it a lot more accessible and I am sure this will get you even more subscribers. All the best from the UK

@@BecomeABassist hey Luke 😊 sorry my englisch is not perfect. It was a compliment. Many courses on the internet show someone perfect playing and they are cutting failes. But you are naturally. It's really great. You don't cut your videos cause of little accidents. You laugh with it and bring us so much happiness. I really love your videos! Really sympathic guy!

Hey Luke your the only bassist who knows 😏 to teach good lessons
Thanks a lot for your work - It would be ideal if you break down what does it mean second position and where it comes from, slightly slower explanation might be hype!
Nice!

What bass and amp are you using Luke?
@BecomeABassist

The bass is a Spector EuroLX and in this video, I'm just recording straight into my Yamaha interface - no amp involved. When I play gigs and things though, my amp at the moment is an AER Electric Bass Amp 2.
Hi Luke. Are the improvs you're doing pentatonics too?
@BecomeABassist
3 жыл бұрын
Hey @Rob Geller! For the most part, yes - it's a lot of C minor pentatonic. I do chuck in a few other colors in there as well, like the flat 5 for a bluesy kind of sound. Also the natural 6 to give a Dorian kind of vibe, but the main sound is that pentatonic.
Does this work on trombone
@BecomeABassist

Oh man - if your chops are up for all that 4ths playing, then yes. It probably wouldn't be the easiest thing in the world, but it's definitely possible.
Thanks alot, really helps but i am such a bad bassist I STILL CANT IMPROVISE WHY DO I SUCK SO MUCH
