Sweet Pea Steam Loco Build Part 12 (Piston Rings From Meehanite Bar to Fitted)
Some extra details in my Meter Maid Loco Build here in these links or visit my Playlist
I bought with no boiler History and part dismantled with many bits missing, the bits missing are no problem to re make, its the boiler that will decide if its a re-furb or a scrap weigh in. So my Scratch built Metre Maid version of this that i built 3 years ago, will have to wait to see if it has a mate!!!
This Sweet Pea looks like a very early one made from the book by Jack Buckler, the deisigner of the Loco back in the 1970's
Since buying i got the certificate see previous parts for that journey
thanks for joining me on the building of a steam locomotive journey

Brilliant, I had memory's of replacing ring's on a motorcycle when I was about 14 unfortunately one snapped so I know how easily they can break. Great to watch the process of you making the piston ring's and great tool for splitting them.

Hi Kev, That was a very satisfying click when you broke those rings. Simple jig but very effective. Interesting read about Meehanite, it's a patented process that can only be supplied by certified foundries. It certainly machined well. Great video, well done. All the best!!

@@MrFactotum Hi Kev, I've seen your comments around the place but not usually been in the same place at the same time. I read your channel info and I see you were a machinist. @@HaxbyShed Hi Paul, yes i think i can ditto most of your comments, again not in the same place at the same time, really pleased we've made contact, at last. i think i recall seeing you on one of Harold's ARW live shows. Trouble is there are that many interesing channels on YT it's nearly impossible to see and contact everybody, so sometimes things have to take there course and eventually contact made. Took me ages to to come across Ade Swash only recently for example a like minded YT'er. I may be old hat at machining and DIY, but i fell in to YT really by accident when i rewound my BSA Magneto and video'd it for a friend on my well out of date Flip Phone, as you will see with the state of the videoing. Took me a few year to improve on things too, that's if i have improved🤣🤣 I've got your email so will send a sticker asap. and work my way through your video's as time permits me. 👍👍 Never a dull moment when there's so many hobby's and DIY'ing to do, don't know how some people say there bored!!!!. with nothing to do. i wish there were 48 hours in a day😄😄👍👍👍👍👍👍 Any way Paul i will sign off for now and see you for another chat soon Regards Kev

Extraordinary as always, and such an education every single time. Fascinating to see how piston rings are made and especially how the gap is made; the gap cracker is really ingenious and so satisfying! I'm surprised though that cast iron is the material of choice - i assumed it would be too brittle to slide over the widest part of the piston. The annealing process surprised me too, but I can certainly see the necessity. Just fascinating Kev, it's all been interesting but this one has been especially good. Thanks again.

Hi Kev. I was interested to see how you set the ring tension. Some people go over the top doing this with jigs etc, but I was glad to see you keep it simple. I hang mine on a peg, heat till they drop off and air cool. I don't think it makes much difference what method you use. Cheers Rob

I find it very rewarding watching your videos, even more so than Keith Appleton, and that is high praise indeed 😊 I’m just about to make my first attempt a t creating Piston Rings and have been filled with dread having watched the talk by Mr Crispin!!! The small enforce is an Ingenious idea and appeared to work perfectly. Do you have links to the Piston Ring articles in Model Engineer (Tubal Cain) Prof. Chaddock and Tom Walshaw? Thank you 👍🏻

hi LF8976 thanks very much for the high praise, i'm humbled i appreciate your comments and support, thank you. now contact made i've sub'd and bell'd you to keep you in my circle.👍 Don't be put off with piston rings, i was apprehensive at first, but then wondered what all the fuss was about once done, (but i'm not making light of the process), Just use some good cast iron and follow the simple steps and you will sail through it. There's is some very technical info to absorb if you want to go in depth, but i would avoid that in depth look, as the hobby workshop doesn't have all the involved technical equipment to perfom to that level, ( keep things simple ) my first attempts failed but i percevered as you've seen in the video's If it's the article that i showed in one of my videos, on piston rings, send me an email my email is on my about page, and i will try and find the article i showed and copy it and email it to you. keep me informed how you get on with things, and good luck Regards Kev
