Ep 29 (Cone Clutch FAILURE !!!!!!! Modification) Make a Micro / Mini / Small / Watchmakers Lathe
#modelengineering #howtomake #machines
Here showing Modifying the Clutch after failure
This lathe was briefly started many many years ago by an unknown Engineer, passed through a few pairs of hands since with nothing else done to it, until i got hold of it, so i will continue with the small amount of work already done, to finish the lathe in to a Imperial Micro / Mini / Watchmakers Lathe with screw cutting capabilities & back geared, everything has got to be made from Scratch including the Back Gears, Clutch, Change wheels, Leadscrew, Tailsock, Spindle, Pulley's, Screwcutting Mechanism, Dials etc etc just to name a few. The casting is very elegant and well made item, with a good foundation to start from.
There were numerous manufactures of these small lathe in Great Britain many moon's ago, to many to name here, so do a search and take a look at the huge seclection of makers and differing shapes, sizes and capabilities.

    An interesting fix Kev. I guess if the cork wears it will be easy to replace. About two years ago I fitted a s/hand clutch to my Myford. The moving part is bronze, and closes again the cast pulley wheel. There's also a strong spring inside the counter shaft. Fun to fit, but I wouldn't do it again! Cheers Nobby

    The other thought I had. Was a clutch of a chainsaw. Which works centrifugal as the power increases the weights move through springs to take up the drive. But it’s how to adapt it to work. Just an idea. Good video enjoyed it.

    Great fix! I believe in days gone cast iron was after used for cone clutches though I wouldn't know if it would be better than bronze. I guess it primarily depends upon the length of the cone with respect to diameter and spring pressure.

    Hi Nigel Yes you've got it, a stronger spring would have done the trick Nigel, but no room, i initially thought with the micro forces involved it would have been enough friction, but you live and learn. I will know now for the next one😄 see you next time👍👍👍👍 ATB Kev

    Looks like a safety feature Kev 🤣 I wonder if it’s the angle that was the problem? Myford use a similar idea for the clutch with metal to metal contact with brass or bronze. I’ve never taken mine apart though. Great solution works really well 😀

    I don't wanna sound rude but bronze on bronze makes for a terrible clutch as bronze is a bearing material and quite a good one a that so choosing it for a clutch seems quite stupid to me Clutches are usually cast iron and some friction material as the coefficient of friction for cast iron is relatively high when paired with something softer like cork or clutch padding or break pad material which the best I know of is sintered cast iron I believe (like the ones in tractor clutches) or if you would really want a bronze clutch without any friction material you can always make the angle shallower tho that might result in a clutch that can bind if the angle is too shallow

    hiya Cj It's okay i have a thick skin, so thanks very much for your interest. Bronze is a brilliant bearing material if lubricated, if dry though it sticks like s---- to a shovel. It would have worked with a stronger spring to pull the tapers together, but being a micro lathe i had no room for stronger spring, but all good now and it works great. Many Thanks for watching and feedback much appreciated.👍👍👍😉 cheers Kev

    @@MrFactotum Really? I never seen it do that although it's true I never put 2 pieces of bronze together under pressure. I assumed it would be bad cuz of it's bearing properties. I forgot I wanted to suggest just making the disk from aluminium as it's soft and doesn't have the best bearing properties unless very well lubricated or with anodized Anyways thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    VERY interesting video Kev. I never gave the fact that you used bronze for the clutch much thought, but I can see now why it was a bad idea. Bronze is naturally slippery. The only cone clutches I've had any experience with were either vintage car (cork faced cone with cast iron receiver) and cylinder type lawn mower (cone and taper receiver mating surfaces both bare cast iron). I would be inclined to leave the aluminium cone in place as it will have much better heat transfer/dissipation than bronze and should preserve the cork longer. Looks OK as well. Cheers Rob

  • @MrFactotum

    @MrFactotum

    cheers Rob Yes it works great. I used bronze because if you ever get bronze bearing grab tight on a shaft you can't move it for love nor money, it would have actually worked if i could have got a stronger spring on, but with everthing being so small and tight for space i couldn't manage it. Anyway it works great now no slippage with a 600 mm long piece of stout timber levering on the chuck, Solid as a rock👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😉😉 many thanks for your thoughts, appreciated regards Kev
