Sweet Child O' Mine - Middle School Band Cover
For my school's "holiday" concert, our band director thought that it would be fun if we were to do a cover of the famous Guns N' Roses song, "Sweet Child O' Mine." When our band has covered songs in the past, we typically have dressed according to the time period and genre of music. When we played Van Halen's "Jump", we dressed in crazy 80's bright colors, including a couple wigs. For this song, our band director told us to come in black leather and the whole punk look. The holiday concert is the biggest performance of the year, with about every family at the school attending. To fit all of these people, the concert takes place in a giant church near our school. Needless to say, playing this song for such a large crowd was immensely fun.

To those saying the director looked like a clown, made the show about him, needed to stay out of the way, etc, you are wrong. This man helped make this performance something these kids will remember their whole life. He got the crowd enthusiastic which in turn encouraged the band. He was amazing. And so were the kids playing. I'm 68 years old and some of my best memories are of my time in the high school band. And we had a director very much like this man. These kids are so fortunate to have this man as their tescher. In my opinion the show would NOT have had the same impact if the director had stood there still, in front of the his music stand with his sheet music, waving his baton to keep time with the band.

I 1000% agree! I will be 60 this year & our high school band directors were absolutely awesome. They helped us kids, in the band, color guard & drill team during marching band season so enthusiastic & proud of what we all were accomplishing together & the memories have lasted for all of us that were involved. Our band directors were brothers & the older brother even put his house up for collateral to help make sure we were able to pay for our trip to compete & March in the Orange Bowl Parade in 1978. There were almost 200 kids in the band & another 100 with the color guard & drill team. We sold everything under the sun to raise money for the trip, chartered a plane to Miami, came out 5th of 10 bands chosen to compete & our drum majors came in first place! Talk about being proud of all of our hard work & it wouldn’t have happened without Karl & Thom Recktenwald! 🪈 🎺 🥁 🎷 😊
I don't know the teacher/director but his enthusiasm shows me he cares about those children.

I will add that the professor with his enthusiasm carried the weight/burden of panic performance on behalf of the band, and therefore removing the stress from the musicians, allowing them to be spontaneous, specially from the singer, who was having amazing eye contact and body language with the audience. And btw, for the first 5 seconds I couldn't believe the quality of her voice. Bravo and well done to both performers and musical director, all of you were amazing!

Yep, spot on. Used to play lead myself, but was net that good in Middle School. It took to Junior Year in High School for me to get to that caliber. She could star in any band. The drummer is good, but this is not the most challenging drum piece. He may be as good as her, but would need a tougher piece to know. The bass was good. The singer was ok for age, with more vocal lessons she could become great. But as a team and for their age they were OUTSTANDING.

@@alabaster193 I think that every member of this band totally stood out at different points in the song. Each one of them brought something incredible to the table & for them to only be in middle school really says something about the amount of talent in these kids. I think all of them should experiment with other instruments sometime. There's a lot of comments, I didn't read all, but did this remind anyone else of the movie "School of Rock"?
Love how enthusiastic the teacher is
That music teacher is AWEOME, inspiring those kids, thanks!
The way the little girl transitioned from her singing stance to her rock-and-roll moves was adorable.
That girl has a really nice singing voice, a real talent! The guitarist also has big things ahead!

The singer doesn’t have the pipes to go further. The guitarist is definately talented, though!

Idk, with the right training & practice I thought she had some potential. Singing like Axl Rose from a little girls body is not really a fair litmus test.

I was most impressed by the singer. Kudos to the music teacher for not trying to make her Axl Rose it. A surefire way to destroy the voice of someone of middle school years.
All right I'm sorry but one more comment: I'm sure anyone seeing this has heard people say things like *That ruined/robbed some of my favorite childhood memories" when talking about a newer version of an old show horror movie that clearly didn't have the same love or passion put into it. Well I'm pretty sure this performance along with the crowds enthusiasm brought a few (memories) back to me. And it could have been any song but it certainly was the passion put in the performance and the love of sharing it - that's the magic that makes it a great memory for everyone involved. When I was a teenager there was no way I could have been able to see or even know about this. Glad I did and I'm so glad someone thought to share, So anyway I'm so glad we now live in an age in which these memories can be shared with strangers like me who really appreciate a lot and for every reason. Many thanks!
Loved this!!! That director kept the kids nervous attention off the crowd and on him, vocalist killed it, amazing guitarist front and center. But the hidden gem is the drummer that you can barely see in the background.. awesome!!!
I love how the dude in front of the stage is feeling it

Yeah, that’s our band director. He really does enjoy watching us perform, and gets quite into it.

Beautiful cover! This song reminds me of Dedham Medical. My pediatrician works at Dedham Medical. She’s been taking care of me for a long time ever since I was about a month old.

For sure. There's nothing more enriching than someone enthusiastically supporting you.
The director pushed those kids in a great direction. Good for you, sir!
First of all God bless these kids. Secondly and apparently excitement transcends time and distance because I could have SWORN when listening to this I was right there with everyone in the audience. Seriously, both the audience and the band provided me with a very special experience this morning; they all nailed it and brought tears of joy to this old truck drivers face. THANK YOU whoever made and posted this. It just made my day. I'm on the Road using the talk to text function on my phone. I say this because I didn't get to read the other comments yet but judging by skimming through the first, anyone who would make fun of or insult the adult who was standing up and dancing is a FOOL. That man could have their teacher or one of their fathers. And even if not it's a LOT EASIER for someone to say something mean and stupid then it is for that same type of person to learn how to live in the moment.
Amazing performance. But honestly, can we give the drummer more love - OUTSTANDING. He knows exactly where to sit in that pocket.

Frickn Bad-Ass! Middle school? They rocked that shit. I could barely play power chords in middle school, and here this kid is busting out a Slash solo and just killing it! The drummer and bassist were perfect and the girls got a great voice. Good for them! Love how passionate and proud the conductor is. The world needs more teachers like that!
It was cute how you could hear the nerves in her voice at first and then bam she was rocking it ❤

yeah, they need to up the volume to her mic. not sure if the kid on guitar or a mixer off stage did it, but they got a lot quieter when she started.
This was by far the coolest middle school band I’ve ever seen! Freakin amazing jobs these kids did! All of them! So much raw talent on that stage. I especially loved how the music teacher was rocking out like he was in his own private mosh pit 🤘!Bravo to all involved. If my band teacher in middle school was that enthusiastic and had us actually play good music…who knows…I certainly would have gotten into a lot less trouble! Rock on!!! 🤘🤘🤘🎸🥁🎤
Director did his job. Well done. Also, kudos to the kiddos!
Omg... this truly has to be one of the impressive performances, cover of this legendary GNR songs i have ever heard! Absolutely fantastic job by these kids!!!!! Nailed it , perfectly
drummer smoked it. love the energy!
