Swedish with Steve: The most important Swedish verb: vara, "to be"

In this episode, I explain some of the main uses of the Swedish verb "vara", meaning "to be". I also go through the main conjugations of the verb.

NOTE: Mistake around 1:45: En meter är HUNDRA centimeter. - A meter is one HUNDRED centimeters. (Not "tusen"/"one thousand"! Thanks to those who pointed out the mistake.)

This was the best video I have seen for the verb "vara". Do all swedish verbs have only one conjugation pattern?

steve... about the "i" pronunciation, i heard some swedes speaking i like "ee" with an "opened sound, a clear EE", but also i heard some speaking an "i" like a sound inbetween "ee" and "i" in english... like when some say "framtid", this i gets this strange inbetween sound I mentioned... same as "bil", "mobilen".... what can you tell me about this. Is it a common way to pronounce some words, or is it a region´s accent? TACK TACK!!!!

Hey Eugenio Hertz! You're right: Standard Swedish does have a rather special sound for the letter . But you're also right in that the exact quality of the sound varies among dialects, just as most other sounds in the language. I'll jot this down as a topic to discuss in a future video. Thanks for the tip!

TransparentSwedish I, too, would love some advice on how to form this sound. I can manage all other Swedish sounds, but I can never get the 'i' sound anywhere near how a native speaker pronounces it!

How come the Swedish pronoun for "She" is used in "Hon är kvart i fem"?

I'm wondering the same, I thought that the correct sentence would be "Det är kvart i fem"...

I don´t know if this is correct, but i read somewhere that swedes treat time like "she", and not "it".... Swedish learner like you guys ( i suppose ). It´s up to Steve to confirm this.

Hey guys! When you talk about time, in other words "the clock" in Swedish, the standard pronoun used to refer to it is "hon" (she). This is a very rare exception; I don't think I've come across any other nouns that take gendered pronouns. Good luck with your studies!

TransparentSwedish Solen, båtar samt (kära) maskiner är också _hon_ i många fall. Klockan kan vara både _hon_ och _den_, beroende på dialekt. Andra exempel på rester av äldre svenska är gamla ackusativformer, som visar sig genom att vi i talspråk säger saker som _såg du'na?_ (ur gamla ackusativformen _hana_) för _såg du henne?_. Det finns också mycket annat, som inte får plats här, men det vet du säkert.
