Swedish Armed Forces | Operational Quantities of Equipment 2024 | How strong is Sweden's defence?

#army #military #sweden
In this review of Sweden's armed forces, the Swedish Armed Forces, or in Swedish
Sveriges försvarsmakt (Försvarsmakten), we look at the quantities of both manpower and equipment. We also look at the operational quantities of equipment, because it is often less than the actual listed amounts. Please bear in mind that this list is not exhaustive as armies often do not disclose all of their gear.
The Swedish Armed Forces (Swedish: Försvarsmakten) are the armed forces of the Kingdom of Sweden, tasked with the defence of the country as well as with promoting Sweden's wider interests, supporting international peacekeeping, and providing humanitarian aid. It consists of four service branches: the Swedish Army, the Swedish Air Force (Svenska flygvapnet) and the Swedish Navy (Svenska marinen), as well as a military reserve force, the Home Guard (Hemvärnet - Nationella skyddsstyrkorna). Since 1994, all Swedish military branches are organised within a single unified government agency, the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters, which is headed by the Supreme Commander, even though the individual services maintain their distinct identities.
As individual soldier loadouts are often varied, we've not included small arms, mines, uniforms etc.

    Compared to its size Sweden has a well equipped and very capable military. As well as the geography of the country itself making it a hell to invade. And Sweden's miltary and equipment is made for the type of defense that is reality for the Ukrainians now. I'm not surprised that Swdish equipment is held in high regard by the Ukrainian military. Thanks for the video.

    Really good analsys. as a former swedish soldier something that many miss when they look at what we have is that we train and plan to fight as a underdog. with small forces hidden and doing hit and run moves. so thats why we lack the numbers of tanks to fight in the open and more smaller faster transports to move around. the country side is full of hidden bunkers and storage for a more drawn out fight. and sadly we hope to much of getting help from europe and allies even before we join nato. But we are seeing a shift right now and quickly building the forces back up

    Sweden should definitely be taken seriously, that's not to say that there's always areas to improve on. Sweden has such an advanced motorized force and air force that it's hard to see how anyone can underestimate them. Some more focus on recruitment (which would likely also help a lot of youth get better at life), is one of the areas that Sweden should look at. It's generally win-win when young people have been in the armed forces for a year as they learn skills that are great to have in other work situations.

    In my view the end of general conscription and the dismantling of the civilian and military territorial defence after the cold war was a hughe misstake. To me and many others that was obvious from the start. Conscription has been reinstituted but only in verry limited numbers. When I was in the army in the first half of the eigthies we could field about 800 000 in the army plus some more in the navy and airforce. Perhaps 900 000 - 1 000 000 in total. At a time when the total population was around 8 000 000. Of course the equipment was not was it is today. We had no body armour and only sheet steel helmets, in WW2 style. But neithr did anyone else. Our airforce used to be the fourth largest. Considering the quality it was stronger than the size implies. We had bomd shelters for most people. Every appartment block built had to have bomb shelters. This is no more. Most old sheöters have fallen in disrepair, unlike in Finland where everything is still intact. It is a bit sad to me to see what "in my view" stupid politicians have done.

    Agreed. I think Western European nations have been very naive for a while, though it’s good that we’re finally waking up. I always tell people that going to the armed forces for a year defines you as a young adult, we’ve now got a whole generation of kids that have very little discipline, work ethic and understanding about their responsibilities due to never having been in the armed forces or home guard.

    It was quite impresive the way the Swedish society was organised during the cold war. Major critical industries had their own defence force, schools was built with intent to being abel to be transformed to provisional hospitals, mashines was stored to making it easier to produce medicin and food without power, hospitals was built with underground facilitys, enormus storages of both military and civilian equipment medicin and food. Truely amasing. I shure hope that we can restore some of it.

    There is an addition to the decades of conscription, though there was a pause for 7 years everyone with military conscription is obligated to mobilization up to the age of 48, then those over 48 are mandated to mobilize in the civilian defense. Next, regarding integration into NATO, it will be fast. Sweden have been a participant of NATO's PFP program since 1994 and started in the 90's with integration to NATO structure. This and the fact that Sweden have been integrated in international mission since the 60's shows that they are not new to align geo-politics or that it's a problem. Also Sweden was under NATO command down to platoon level in international missions already in 1995. Swedish equipment is already compatible with NATO munitions etc. Sweden have as a goal to have 72 Archers in the near future and the Swedish defense industry is up scaling as we speak.

  • @MilitaryRated

    @MilitaryRated

    Ай бұрын

    Yeah, Sweden's problems are small compared to other admissions into NATO, the industrial base, training, military functions and such are already mostly there. Sweden's air force and kit is exceptional, though it is always important to look at weaknesses too, even the mightiest armies in the world should look to improve, and the only small minus for Sweden, in my humble opinion, is the lack of personnel. That doesn't mean that there aren't capable reserves from past conscription, but that 7 year gap will need to be filled. I think a lot of countries are realizing that it was slightly naive to remove conscription, as it is a great way to help young people get a good foundation in life, and an extra year in the armed forces for a lot of young adults means that they'll have a solid civilian life and career afterwards - at least in my home country. It's a good investment in people by the government.

  • @AndyWoohoo666

    @AndyWoohoo666

    @@MilitaryRated Well the personell side is for sure an issue if your compare to times during the cold war. What I think people not really get is the conscription system and what impact it has. None the less the real issue with that is the fact that even if Sweden can mobilize say 250.000 personell that have military training at the moment they can't equip them. There are simply not enough uniforms, boots, weapons and what not. On top, even if Sweden will increase the conscription with 8000 a year ( in the 80's Sweden had around 60.000 conscripts a year ) they will have to wait for new regiments to be built and the infrastructure with that along with increasing equipment. So yes there are a lot of issues that will take time to solve. But just as a little note. I have been in the military since 1981 ( between 88-93 I was in the French foreign legion ), I work as an officer within the Army but am a former Marine ( Swedish ). As an example, when we have bigger exercises both national and international we actually get part time personell at times that are just employed for 1-2 weeks. Some are from the Home Guard but also former conscripts or personell that has been on international missions. Before 2010 most soldiers ( not officers ) and personell that was sent on international missions was civilian volunteers that had only conscription because the the only full time employees was basically officers and civilians working in the military, no full time soldiers or NCO's with a few exceptions. Swedish soldiers on international missions since Congo in the 60's have had a great reputation and I've done a lot of them myself. Other nations have been very impressed with the Swedish soldier and chocked knowing they were not full time soldiers. That as just an example of the result of conscription. Basically every person that had been conscripted below the age of 48 is an reserve although the level depends on how many repetition exercises they've had since their conscription. Just wanted to add some food for thoughts and another nuance, but sure you are right there are issues and they will take a long time to solve but I think the issues are a bit different.

    Ah, we've likely been on some similar missions, thanks for your service! As someone not from Scandinavia but with a lot of training experience with Scandinavian (and Finnish) NCO's and soldiers, I would agree that they're just a different level than most other conscripts (and first year soldiers) from bigger nations. Thank you for your input, I'm always looking to learn. I'm glad that Sweden and Finland joined NATO as it will in my opinion stop you know who from having any thoughts about trying anything. With the very solid technological base in Sweden-Finland-Norway NATO has a Northern backbone that can both make their own gear (if the other you know who gets to power again), defend themselves and field one of the most advanced air forces in the world. Exiting times for the Nordics.

Since 94 I've done Bosnia, Macedonia, Croatia and Kosovo West Sahara. Then Congo, Tchad, Afghanistan. Now I'm to old and riding the desk. So you know how much ammunition is stockpiled in Sweden? From looking at where Sweden ordered their 155mm ammunition (Norway and Germany), they've placed orders for ammunition in the last 20 years that exceeds what their artillery can safely fire over a 6 month period if you look at barrel degrading and wear\tear. I've been to a cold war storage bunker in Sweden myself that contained more artillery shells than what Sweden would use in a month. There's 100's of those bunkers.
