Baltic Land Forces | Operational Quantities & Power Comparison | Latvia, Lithuania & Estonia

#army #military #baltics
In this review of the land armies of the Baltic States, the Estonian army, the Lithuanian army and the Latvian army, we look at the quantities of both manpower and operational equipment. Please bear in mind that this list is not exhaustive as armies often do not disclose all of their gear. I've also left out some pieces that aren't really relevant on a regional level.
This is the first video in the series, subscribe to get notified when I post additional videos.
In conclusion, the Baltic states seem to be taking their defence very seriously. They have a very high percentage of soldiers to population, and produce some great drones.

Sending love and courage from Baltics (LV) to all loyal Ukrainians. Thing is, overall we see your situation better than most big, "western" countries - both in goverments and among sane public. Among other historical reasons for that is knowing Kremlin's propaganda methods ravaging feeble minds further west, while only a few here. If we were not so small, comparatively ill-equipped for war and relatively poor, we as nations wouldn't let situation to become so dire on your frontlines. I know you've been let down by the biggest powers and it's eroding overall credibility of NATO, besides politics. Things are changing, just way too slow in Europe. Some still doesn't realise we're allready at war, if of a different kind than in Ukraine yet. Note, that if boots on ground for you of any NATO memberstate would be arranged, it's most logical politically to send in Baltic states first, not France. I would not only support that, but go myself - despite that my army rejected me. I'll go there anyways to do anything possible when means will allow. Stay safe and unfortunately - as a nation you have to be brave to sign up for ЗСУ even more than before. 🔱Разом до перемоги!🔱

@@MilitaryRated OK, but why did not you notice that Baltics land forces lack of medium range air defense, lack of early warning radar systems. They have got poor connections with NATO closest, strong ally Poland. Baltic states have got different weapon and equipment systems which require different maintenance, spare parts and services from far far away depots in foreign countries. How will Baltics states get supply and support from far away allies, when they have poor own transport systems and poor connections with Poland? These three small states lack of own air, navy, sea cost defense cover and effective support. Why do they still buy different weapon and equipment form faraway states? Why do not they cooperate in this matters with ally Poland, which can offer lot of interesting weapon and equipment systems? This neighbor cooperation could save money, short roads of supply and support, allow send better aid and save time.

0:31 It's not that we don't want tanks (we would love to!), but the problem is that it costs enormously to buy and, especially, maintain them. Unless we rise our percentage of GDB spent on defence to at least 4%, it'd be very difficult to even afford one fully operational tank batallion, not to mention the other assets needed to defend those tanks (anti-drone countetmeasures and so on).

@@HakkoChannel I don't get it. How do, for instance, Lithuanian PZH2000 cover any shortcomings in Estonian K9 howitzer? They have similar capabilities, they would probably operate on faraway theaters and there could be rare cases, when they could fight all together. The same case with NASAMS and Irist-T AD systems. They would operate in different regions, but still will need different training, maintenance, spare parts, different missiles, supply, support,, and these issues heavily increase costs of mutual defense and cooperation. What is more, German weapon systems are well know from high prices, high spare parts and maintenance costs, technical complications, log terms of deliveries and services. Can you see that Lithuania will get only 54 Leopard 2A8 tanks in next 5 years? Poland already bought and got 70 Abrams M1A1 delivered in last year. Next 66 tanks will get in this year, and 250 M1A2sep3 will get in next three years. There are also delivered 50 K2 tanks and 130 K2 tanks Polish Army will get in next 3 years. I am not sure about Estonia and Lithuania, but near Riga, Latvia at the Adazi base, there is at least one tank squadron present that belongs to the NATO nations (mostly Leopard 2A6, there is a depot built this year to service them in Adazi), and Canadians expand in Latvia to a brigade level (about 5K) so the heavy equipment is constantly delivered, the work on the tank polygon there is constantly going on. The tanks are expensive, and as the current war in Ukraine shows the tanks are almost obsolete, the drones, artillery (including HIMARS), and antiaircraft defense are much more useful. Patria 6x6 is now completely produced in Latvia (serviced as well), so they are delivering 200 units in a few years and certainly, they will expand to other Patria products.

Hmm, tanks are not obsolete, however they require proper cooperation maintenance and support. Combined arm forces, good cooperation and training are needed to successful operations. Keep in mind, all strong and many small NATO allies still got and buy next tanks. You also could notice that in Latvia from few years operate Polish tank company with PT91 tanks. These old Polish tanks fight very well in Ukraine. They already destroyed many Russian aggressors and suffered less own loses than modern Leopards and Abrams. So, well used old tanks with well trained crews, maintenance and support can working well.

You forgot to mention, and others may not even know, that the Baltic countries gave up all the Russian weapons that they could keep after the declaration of independence, and are building their own army from scratch. Until 2014, the governments of all Baltic states viewed their army very poorly and financed it very poorly. You also forgot to mention that Lithuania also together with Latvia and Estonia ordered 8 Himars with the possibility of replenishment. Lithuania plans to raise its military budget to 4% of GDP, Poland's military budget to 4% as well. You also did not mention how much military infrastructure has been built in all the Baltic states in recent years, i.e. training grounds, repair bases, barracks, and ammunition warehouses. Therefore, considering that countries that are building their military forces from scratch and whose economy is only growing and catching up with other EU countries, the work done is more than impressive. Also, many people may not know that Lithuania's weapons law is one of the most liberal in the world, and a lot of weapons have been bought by the residents themselves since 2014. Also, you forgot to mention that in all the Baltic states there are military organizations with a large number of members, which are subordinate to the army, but the number of their members is not included officially, and they are very popular, at least in Lithuania it is for sure. I want the sofa generals to understand that creating the entire military infrastructure and the army itself from scratch is not easy , I am amused by such commentators who talk about aviation or other weapons. Buying is one thing, creating a full service, logistics and everything else is another matter.

The 8 HIMARS were on the list. :) I agree, it is very impressive what the three Baltic nations are doing. The trend in NATO is that the smaller nations close to Russia is showing how it's done while the 'old greats' are hot and cold on how to move forward. Seems the pin has finally dropped for France and Germany.
