I have a lot of sympathy towards Sweden. These people came in as refugees with everything provided to them by the state, but instead of teaching their children to be grateful and actually parenting them (most do not even work so don't blame this on lack of parenting), they have raised criminals who abuse and take advantage of the kindness offered to them. Sweden has never had a history of colonising these African/Muslim-majority countries, yet these people still act like the Swedes committed an original sin so they take no accountability for the high crime rates and blame the Swedes for not offering more integration programmes/welfare. Except whatever offered to them will never be enough. They believe they are entitled to everything whilst contributing absolutely nothing. There is never any sense of personal responsibility with these type of people. It's always somebody else's fault, the system's fault, it's never the actions and decisions of my choosing which have led to my life outcomes.

The conservatives have let their supporters down badly by becoming a quasi - socialist government, so why would everyone move to vote for a socialist party? Second, Labour will suffer from the same problem the Conservatives have had - a party so large that it represents everything from Left, to Right MP's, impossible to successfully manage from a strategy point of view. With regard to wealth tax, well we all know about Labour taxation and 'other peoples money'. I would give it no more than 3 months before everyone is regretting Labour being in power.

The problem with going after taxing wealth first over work is that those with wealth already would rather do anything than give it to a government that they perceive will just waste it. So if you have a tax on wealth at say over £10m they’d rather buy a new Ferrari on the last day of the financial year and drive it a mile out of the garage so that it loses half its value than give it to the government.

If they think voting Labour in is going to solve some of the main concerns like immigration, or sorting the UK finances, they are going to be wrong. The idea of taxing wealth is going to be highly controversial. Particularly if it is not limited to the very wealthy, so more than 1 million in assets/cash holdings. Simply windfall taxing people's homes would be extraordinarily unpopular.

It has amazed you, really? At University we learned that music, politics and economics are inextricably linked. Here are some examples : music in mediaeval Bruges flourishing due to major wealth generated by trading especially the wool trade: this also applied in Antwerp in the 16th century; this port city became a centre of printing, leading to music publishers being able to disseminate music internationally. Rome and Venice were successful city-states where architecture, art and music flourished (also science) with the overwhelming influence of the Catholic Church driving much of this development. Vienna, the epicentre of the Austo-Hungarian empire, became the world centre of 'Classical' music with Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert the 4 titans of the style all originating from there. Flourishing economic situation in Paris at end of 19th into 20th centuries led to rise not only of visual arts but also music with Debussy, Fauré, Ravel and 'Les Six'. In the USA look at the distinction between West and East Coasts of America in jazz in the 1950s and 1960s; broadly speaking East Coast being tied to a dynamic political sense of Black Consciousness with the West Coast more relaxed and more related to entertainment not social revolution. 'Hard bop' vs 'cool jazz'. In UK the funding available to niche modernist music in the 60s, 70s and 80s has tailed off to the situation now where there is almost no funding, so instead of avant-garde modernists we now see that Karl Jenkins is the UK's No.1 composer - as popularity is now the single overwhelming factor in artistic success in the UK due to profit generation. The likes of Birtwistle would not have been able to earn a living as composers had they been born 30 years after they were. This is the tip of the iceberg and I have omitted several dozen other examples I could cite. One hopes you will be less amazed in years to come.

  • @Ken_oh545

Music (and architecture, art, literature, science etc) is inextricably linked to economically and politically flourishing times. Consider mediaeval Bruges, 16th-century Antwerp, the Spanish Netherlands and the Habsburgs, 17th century Rome and Venice with Monteverdi and Palestrina, 18th century Vienna. How did one city give us 4 titans of Classical music ? Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and Schubert are those to whom I refer. The history of Jazz in USA is deeply enmeshed with social and political developments. One might cite dozens of other examples. All the niche avant-garde music of the 50s flourished due to cultural promotion budgets, think of Stockhausen, Boulez inheriting the modernist baton from Varèse and Stravinsky. And now in UK the principal valued factors are popularity and profitability - and so we learned last week that Karl Jenkins (bless him) is UK's No.1 classical composer. One hopes you are now a little less amazed and a touch more enlightened.

The point about Montesquieu should make us reflect a bit more, I think. Montesquieu isn't unique among writers, either. A lot of the enlightenment thinkers agreed with him. John Fortescue, centuries earlier, agreed with him. Napoleon made this a matter of government policy. Nor was this view unique among intellectuals. You'd complain it was something your wife made you do and all the priests were gay. Religion was always more popular with women than with men. Something else is happening now. I don't think Richard Dawkins deserves all - or even most - of the blame for the collapse in Christianity. Christianity can survive mockery. Meanwhile, there's a female vicar in this interview who I think might be closer to being part of the problem. No one wants to go to a church that doesn't believe in itself. Catholic church attendance has only declined after Vatican II. The collapse in church attendance is concentrated with the mainline protestant faiths and, to a lesser extent, the Catholics. Evangelicals are doing just fine in the US, the census says, while they're expanding dramatically in many developing countries. In orthodox countries, Christianity has actually been on the up for the past few decades, recovering from communism. If your church isn't counter-cultural, if its beliefs are generally accepted by a modern audience, you're doing it wrong.
