Swatching and Trying out Daniel Smith Watercolor Dot Cards; all four pages, 238 colours!

This is a long one, but I thought it would be great to swatch out every single dot on Daniel Smith's four page chart set in a single video, so we can see all 238 colours at once.
Daniel Smith now actually have 260 colours but I sadly don't have the new ones to try out. I am hoping in the future they will release a new card with all of these so I can swatch them as well.
If you are interested in knowing all of the pigment names and numbers, here is a link to Daniel Smith's page with all of their detailed charts: danielsmith.com/brochures-and-...
(The third one down in particular).
I've also swatched out Winsor and Newton's dot cards, which you can view here:
So sit back, grab a cuppa, and watch me paint and talk for almost an entire hour. It's riveting viewing, lol!!
And as this posted, I reached 300 subscribers, woohoo!

So THAT's what it's called: OPERA PINK... I've seen it on paintings and wanted it, now I'll finally go get it. Love the video!

It's definitely a really pretty colour! Sometimes it's called opera rose, depending on the brand. 🌹

Patty- I really appreciate your swatching all of those colors. What an excellent reference these cards can be when choosing colors to buy. I had never heard of gerichromes before. I learned something new. I am attracted to metallic and glitter colors so those last ones you swatched on black paper were great. I don't own any Daniel Smith paints so this was very helpful. Thank you.

Oh great, I'm glad my video was useful! It is always helpful to see everything swatched out and being able to choose colours from the entire collection. 🙂

I wish I'd found this video sooner, it's so helpful. Thank you Becky. I've screen shot the four charts and already I've added some colors to my buy list and switched some others out based on the colors being cooler or warmer than I expected. I'm starting with the basic warm and cool red, yellow and blues. I found the blues easily but there are too many yellow and red choices lol. I love 4 greens so I guess I'll have 4. 🤷‍♀ That just leaves a couple of earthy browns and I'm leaning towards at least one that granulates. Plus now I've seen it I might add pearlescent shimmer too for just that little bit of sparkle on the water in seascapes or a bit of dew on a plant. I know this video is a couple of years old and you probably have black paper now but I noticed that Daniel Smith makes colored watercolor grounds to prep paper, boards or canvas with. It comes in transparent, white, pearlescent white, iridescent gold and black. The black would show off those sparkly paints.

I'm so glad this video is still helpful! It's always so hard to pick a palette from scratch; I spent many, many hours trying to figure out which colours to choose first. I do indeed have some black paper now; Stonehenge have a gorgeous cotton paper pad and it works perfectly. I've used white ground before, and it's not my favourite surface but I'd be curious to try the black out.

Thank you so much for this! I have recently began using DS watercolours and I am obsessed with them. I have too many colours in my radar and this will help me to (maybe) shorten the list. I absolutely adore their earth colours! I paint mostly birds, insects, mushrooms, and earth tones are incredibly useful on their own or in mixes. Quin burnt orange and scarlet mixed with different blues make the most rich, gorgeous greys and browns. Natural Sienna Monte Amiata and French Ochre mixed with a tiny bit of Dioxazine Purple result in fabulous beiges. Yesterday I mixed all my yellows with purple and it is mind blowing how different the results are considering that many yellows (normals and ochres) are on their own. Now I have to mix my other near 50 pigments with one another. 🫣😂

Btw To clean your brush cleaner you can use the turners acryl palette cleaner. A little goes a long way and gets out most of the paint stains

The pearlescent shimmer is as wonderful as it seems. I found a sale and bought a second tube, even though I'd barely started the first. It really creates a wonderful but subtle shimmer for florals.

My green apatite genuine is a totally different color than this dot chart…it’s so beautiful and dries with a beautiful separation of green and brown! Great for eye colors! Don’t write it off cause of this dot color! It’s amazing!

Thanks for sharing your take on the DS dot cards, it's fun to hear about what you've used and which ones you're considering for your palette. FYI, DS probably uses the Nickel Titanate Yellow to make the colors more opaque like the original cadmium colors. I got some samples of the new DS cad colors when they came out about 15 years ago (DS eliminated cadmium and manganese from their line because of fears that some might escape into the nearby waterways and waste system--heavy metals are difficult for municipal water systems to filter out, so they can get dumped into waterways and ground water) and rarely use them unless doing portraits. But they are lovely colors.

That's really interesting to know some of their history, thank you for sharing! I love heavy metal colours (and music, lol) but they definitely wouldn't be very environmentally friendly. Safer, less toxic versions are better for us all.

I use Ult Red. It's pasty and not very saturated. I do like it though. Mine seems more pinkish that it looks in the video - almost like cobalt violet. I also use Napth Maroon and recommend it - a slightly of muted Bordeaux, but flexible and beautiful.

For duochrome colours finetec flip flop colours are so much better as they switch between two different colours depending on the angle of viewing. No matter which way she moved the Daniel Smith ones they only reflected one colour really.

Really enjoyed this! Is it me, or do all the yellows look alike? I have 4 yellows on my palette: nickel azo yellow PY150, and the three Hansa Yellows. I'm also interested in getting the Pearlecent Shimmer - it's so neat; I'll find some use for it! I think Ill get the next, updated form of the dot sheet, whenever it comes out. Thanks, Becky! ;:

A lot of the yellows are very similar, haha! I think it is because Daniel Smith has so many pigments in their range. Makes it very hard to choose, lol. I picked up the pearlescent shimmer and it's really, really pretty. I am so behind on making videos for my Daniel Smith paints! Oh and I am not sure if you saw my recent Mystery Mail video...I opened the package you sent, and thank you SO much for everything, I love the brushes and paints a lot! ❤️💜
