    1. Chris, an internal medicine vet at Veterinary Specialist Services, discusses swallowing disorders in dogs and how to adjust their feeding regime accordingly. 2. Swallowing is a reflex that moves food from the back of the mouth, down the throat, and into the stomach. In dogs, the esophagus is horizontal due to their quadrupedal stance, unlike humans who have a vertical esophagus when sitting or standing. 3. Difficulties in swallowing can have various causes, and if your pet is experiencing such issues, your vet may recommend tests like x-rays, fluoroscopy (a video x-ray using contrast dye), CT or MRI scans, and endoscopy to examine the esophagus and stomach. 4. Regurgitation or difficulty swallowing can increase the risk of aspiration pneumonia, where food, saliva, or water enters the lungs. 5. To manage swallowing disorders, Chris suggests several strategies, such as feeding from a height, trying different types of food, or using special chairs. 6. Upright feeding is often recommended to make the esophagus more vertical, thus utilizing gravity to help food move down. This can be achieved through hand-feeding from a height, having the dog eat from a raised surface, or using specialized chairs or harnesses. 7. For smaller dogs, holding them upright during feeding, similar to holding a baby, can also help. 8. After feeding, it's often recommended to keep the dog in an upright position for 10 to 15 minutes. This can be achieved using baby carriers, customized carriers, or a Bailey chair for larger dogs. 9. To keep the dog entertained and prevent aversion to this new feeding regime, it's important to find ways to stimulate them during this time. 10. Depending on the dog's condition, multiple smaller meals a day may be recommended, or a more normal feeding regime may be advised. 11. Bones should always be avoided for dogs with swallowing difficulties, as they can cause obstructions or further complications. 12. If a dog coughs or splutters during feeding, it's best to stop immediately and contact your vet. 13. Hand-feeding may be recommended for some dogs, as it allows for better control over the speed of feeding and the dog's position. 14. Your vet will discuss the best feeding regime for your dog, which may include the use of chairs, upright feeding, hand-feeding, and specific types of food. 15. Once a successful feeding regime has been established, it's important to stick to it strictly. Any changes should be discussed with your vet to ensure they are made safely. 16. For further information, Chris invites viewers to contact Veterinary Specialist Services.

My personal opinion is that you should get rid of the background music and you would be more easily understood. Great video, nevertheless. My little dog is at this moment having a hard time breathing. This has gone on for nearly 24 hours and has happened before. I live a long way from a vet so I am regularly turning him and patting his chest. I am scared and sick of this happening to him (chihuahua x papillon). I am going to try the upright position. The day before he had this go wrong, I had tried to buy him a taller bowl, but couldn't get one. This was just my idea. But I was trying to just make him stand up to eat - obviously not correct. Thanks, I'll try to feed him your way.
