SVS Ultra Evolution Speakers: Diamond-Coated Tweeter and Force-Balanced Woofer Array

Ғылым және технология

Part two of a three-part video series where SVS President Gary Yacoubian, Chief Designer Smith Freeman, and Vice President Nick Brown discuss breakthrough Ultra Evolution speaker tweeter, mid-range driver, and woofer technology.
A diamond-coated aluminum dome tweeter is completely new for SVS. Using a modern technology called vapor deposition, a layer of diamond carbon is grown on the surface of the aluminum dome to improve rigidity and critical acoustic properties. This breakthrough in material science raises the frequency response well beyond the limits of human hearing resulting in effortless, airy, and unveiled highs with no measurable distortion. It also pushes low frequency extension of the tweeter deeper for more seamless blending with the midrange.
No detail was left to chance in the Ultra Evolution speaker design as evidenced by the organic cell lattice tweeter diffuser. While its main purpose is to protect the tweeter from physical damage, SVS engineers prototyped dozens of grille patterns to determine which provided the best acoustic performance. Through FEA analysis, a semi-random pattern derived from organic cell structures was chosen for its optimized off-axis frequency response and dispersion characteristics.
Owing to the SVS subwoofer design pedigree is a new woofer execution in the three Ultra Evolution floorstanding speakers. Similar in design to the brand’s 3000 Micro Subwoofer, dual opposing active woofers on the top and bottom of the cabinet arranged in a force-balanced array render effortless low frequency response while addressing room modes.
By having eight woofers from a pair of speakers, all firing in unison in different directions; deep, authoritative bass fills the listening area, smoothing out peaks and nulls. Mechanical energy from each front-firing woofer is equaled inside the cabinet by the rear-firing woofer, thus eliminating mechanical coloration. This results in pure, accurate low frequencies at any playback level.
Midrange drivers and woofers across all models feature glass fiber composite cones chosen for the superb stiffness-to-mass ratio and ability to convey stunning dynamics and pinpoint tonal accuracy. Separate, acoustically tuned internal chambers for the woofers and midrange drivers enhance separation and eliminate the potential for cabinet resonances, resulting in pristine sound across the frequency spectrum. Precision-cast aluminum-alloy baskets ensure precise alignment of critical components and maximize thermal dissipation.
Consisting of seven new models featuring advancements in driver design, cabinet design, and component materials, Ultra Evolution speakers usher in a new era of reference quality sound for SVS.

I'm excited to hear these new tweeters. You guys mentioned they're clear, and detailed, but not overly bright. That's exactly what I'm looking for...great job!

I wish you guys would see the big picture of building a product for Sonos with SVS subwoofer quality. Even if Sonos new sub has (2) horizontally opposed 10” drivers, it will never have the clarity , low frequency response, and jaw dropping deep chest feeling bass that SVS is famous for.GYST!!

Glad you made a speaker at a budget price with tech that has been done already. But this tech has been done already.

Hi, I have 2 Parasound A21+ monobkocks with 1Kwpc each. Lots of power, how would these pair with the SVS pinnacles ultra? I can’t stand bright harsh speakers.

Impedance for all of the new speakers dropped to 6ohms from 8ohms. Is this to better describe the actual impedance or will they measure a lower average like before?

Most speakers dip to 6 and 4 ohms anyways.

Loudspeaker impedance will actually vary considerably with frequency. There will be a minimum value, a maximum value, and an average or 'nominal' value. The nominal (average) impedance for the Ultra Evolution speakers is 6 ohms, and all of the Ultra Evolution loudspeakers can be easily driven by any decent quality AVR or amplifier. Just reach out to our CS team if you want to do a deeper dive on a recommended amplifier power rating for your specific application, room size and playback level. Ed M - SVS

So....the woofers are at opposition, not in what us old guys called "push-pull"...logical, and sound engineering. No, puns not intentional, ha ha. Love the way you guys think about speakers, and the whole music experience!

if you have woofers rear firing with ports wouldnt you need significant space from the front wall? this is what logics tell me. if this is the case then most people with home theatres wouldnt benefit front this design? Typically seen in two channel speaker designs

The angled rear cabinet wall creates natural distance from a wall for the ports which reduces how far you need to pull them out. They will benefit from being pulled out further, but 4-6 inches as a starting point is good.

Being the proud owner of several SVS speakers (SB16 Ultra, Prime book shelf, Ultra Surround, Prime wireless), I am a big fan. However, I'm struggling with replacing my B&W 702s2 towers. I didn't think the previous Ultra towers would perform as well, but now with the Evolution, I'm having to reconsider things. Can someone provide some insights?
