I just bought a pair of these in the US and the seller messed up the pricing, so I ended up paying for only one speaker. The Ultras are a true hybrid speaker and are meant to handle both music AND movies. The metallic tweeter is excellent at replicating sound effects like gun shots, glass breaking, etc. but a the same time very good for music applications. Much of the criticism for these speakers is coming from pure music listeners who are not testing them in the theater setting. What works for music does not always work for film, and the Ultras, IMO are a home theater speaker first and a music speaker second.

I love my Ultras over any other bookshelf I have heard.

Bought these last year on Pursuit's recommendation, and a few other guys. These are great. Bass is immersive.

Bought these. There on the way. Can’t wait for them to arrive. So excited. I just hope my Amp can push them ok lol 😂

I like svs because I watch movies and listen to music 50/50 of the time.

Great review. Are the Ultras worth the upgrade for home theater? Or maybe the Ultra for center and primes for fronts?

We had a few hints about a possible 10th speaker and that it would be a Dynaudio. Evoke 10 is wonderful but I was rather hoping for the Confidence 20...😁

I love my SVS Prime systems. The neutrality is what attracts me to them.

I love my Svs Audio Ultras and couldn't agree more about the prime which I have still, but sitting in my closet cause I don't really care for their sound once I heard the Ultra. Good review and thanks. Love the channel ,u give me a ton of ideals which isn't always good for the wallet.

I have a Recommendation. The Philharmonic BMR Monitor. Made by Philharmonic Audio and Salk Signature Sound. Could u please review a pair. Wonderful speakers

They have a Focal look about them. Kind of metallic and clinical.

I'm sure most of the viewers will like and enjoy the Ultras, mostly due to their bass and forward linear upper treble. I've listened to these in person, and they are clearly Home Theater designed speaker (forward and bass focus). I'm thrilled that you've added the DYnaudio Evokes to this mega test. The Evokes are a great value speaker. Thanks Terry.

Wow Terry, I think your take on the Ultras largely crystallizes my thoughts on them.. and maybe I'm not daft. So good, yet!...I think they have characteristics that hint at a home theater design, but happen to be damn good on music in some ways. I'm jazzed you're gonna do a comparison and review between them and the Dynaudio Evokes, as I liked both enough to consider purchasing one or the other, and ultimately decided neither was the one. They're different. Look forward to hearing your thoughts, and picks for fav's in this group. Peace

What about Bose?

I have them in Gloss white. They sound clinical and metallic, which can be boring for long listening sessions. They come into their own when you listen to them at loud volumes. The music sounds clear even at high volumes. I have them bi-wired to a pioneer LX104. For comparison, my Fluance bookshelf speakers sound more musical at a fifth of the price but are nowhere near efficient and lack bass.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Finally!!! Only, I am confused now. I was expecting the confirmation they would be the best for me, but now, hearing they lack soul in vocal presentation as a prioritizing home theater utilization and being oppressive towards the listener, I don't know what to do :) Wonderful review, nevertheless!

Listen to them yourself and see what you think, you might like them and they could sound different in that regard off a different amplifier and then m maybe compare them with another speaker you also like to see what you think. I don't know they have been designed with home theatre as a priority, it seems to me like they might be to me.

Would using the Altra center speakers standing up as lefts and rights sound better than the Ultra book shelf’s them selves. Cheers.

I own the SVS Ultra Bookshelf; I upgraded from Polk S20e. I absolutely love how good they sound the out of the box is amazing. Positioning is easy and they are very forgiving the soundstage and imaging is incredible. But… Because of the layout of my room I have them up high on brackets, and after a while the love wore down, and I was wondering what was wrong. I figured they lacked clarity. I introduced a Behringer FPQ1502 equaliser between the source and my amp. Using frequency response chart for the speakers I found from the videos here I corrected the speakers, with a spectrum analyser app on my iPhone and full spectrum pink noise from Amazon music Hd, you can level out the frequent response. Honestly, the best thing I ever did. £120 on top of the speaker cost and they sound like they’re worth 3/4 Times that now. I wish I did it sooner!! If you’re thinking of spending thousands on speaker upgrades. Try spending £120 first and “tuning” them!

Honestly EQ is the best way to make speakers sound good. The money I spend on speakers are purely for looks and build quality. As long as you have good acoustics in the room and EQ, you are good to go.

I have Kef Q750 towers and Q150 bookshelves. How do u think they compare against the Kef's. Love the way the Svs look, personally I think they are the best looking speakers out there. Looks do matter, but obviously sound is more important. I own 2 pair of headphones, bose QC35ll and Sony MX10004, the sonys sound a bit better but the Bose are more comfortable, so I use the Bose almost all the time.

Thank for another thorough review. I am building a pair of CSS Audio speakers from a kit, and borrowed a bit of manufacturing wisdom from Acoustic Energy. Note where the rounding of the cabinet corners is placed. That rounding allow you to use only two large pieces of hardwood veneer instead of six different panel pieces. You just bend one piece of veneer around the front and sids and the other starts on top and curves around to the underside. Very economical in terms of manufacturing effort. Haven't finished them yet but look forward to comparing to Dynaudio Evoke 20s and JBL HDI 1600. Being generally a soft dome tweeter advocate, I was about to comment that maybe some of what you heard could be attributed to the aluminum tweeter. However, my JBLs have an aluminum tweeter in a horny (hornish) looking wave guide and I don't notice any of the usual things that annoy me about metal dome tweeters. I might have to relictantly open my mind a bit.

Hi Terry. What speaker from these pack would you think would match my Yamaha A-S501 the best: Kef q300, Jamo C93, Wharfedale 11.2, Dali Spektor 2 or B&W 685? I am looking for neutral presentation overall, with detailed mids, yet not in my face, sparkle treble, yet not overlybright, and fast and taut bass. Thank you a lot

Finally jeez been waiting for this for years. Would you say they need alot of power? I have a denon avr that only puts out like 70w to them just wondering how much better they would sound withmaybe 150w to each of them if they would benefit from it at all and if you could recommend something like a 3 channel amp because I have a surround system with all the ultras and the center ultra also which I believe actually takes up to 225w

They need good quality power, the impedance drops quite low despite SVS labeling them as 8 ohms.

Emotiva makes a 3 channel amp

The group test is certainly a study in contrasts but I feel through your reviews and demos you have gone well beyond the superficial description and plumbed the nuances. I see and hear two main divisions, speakers that from a fairly obvious and quasi-objective standpoint offer impressive characteristics that are identifiable and audible. We can hear that they edge out their competitors in those defined areas. The second group are speakers that possibly fall short in specific areas but have a magic or refinement about them that is difficult to pin down. For me, that is the essence of the best of high end (irrespective of price), design. Everyone makes choices, but I think that living with a speaker is very different from being impressed with a demo for one reason or another. The most confounding comparison in this regard was the Neat. It does so many things that stake its audiophile claim that I felt I should like it for those obvious reasons. But I pictured myself having bought a pair and living with them, trying to be satisfied with that, knowing all the while what I was missing. Another comparison had a similar surprising outcome. I feel that you leave room in your reviews for these type of judgements, in most cases commenting on them directly, then providing the opportunity to hear them. I may have a slightly different set of preferences but what I hear in every case is what you describe and you are to be congratulated for this.

I wonder if these would outperform my energy cf-30 towers that I'm planning on replacing to reduce footprint.

Its hard because you want the best of both worlds. I do 90% home theater, but I am anal about my music. I've had very good musical speakers that I found wanting for HT use. I wonder if modern EQing will help?

hi, could you describe how they are in comparison to the Klipsch RP600m, are they worth the surcharge in your opinion?

One of my main concern is detail retrieval and nuance. I consider a speaker high fidelity if it can recreate things like choral work recorded in a Cathedral. That is, with the echo intact, usually describing the interior of the recording space. The prime (for example) aren't at that level.

Let me make a NOTICE here for those young people who seem to not have knowledge about recording equipment, and who I keep seeing people using these as studio monitors. DO NOT use this for your recording studios. I have seen a bunch of people using this in their studio thinking they are professional studio monitors, when they ARE NOT. These are home entertainment speakers and are NOT calibrated or manufactured to be studio monitors for recording studios. These are great for playbacks like iPOD, headphones, vehicle, clubs, pubs and such to make sure your mixes are coming out the studio properly. But these are NOT Studio Monitors. So PLEASE for the love of god, stop using these as studio monitors in your recording studios. Instead use FOCAL, ATC, PCM, EVENTS, Auratones, Avantones, Yahama HS-series., Genelecs and Adam's... which are just a few that are actually manufactured for recording studios.

super movie. I suggest to take test. Heco Celan Revolution3 black piano. I have revolution7 o revolution3 and in my opinion they are better from ultra tower svs & ultra bockself to stereo of course.

That black called piano gloss in my SVS subwoofer and worth extra $100 here in US. So let me say this: home theater speakers are different from Hi-Fi speakers and SVS trying to be both. It's funny to see how KZreadrs are so nice describing new speakers but when next new thing appears they start to tell truth about old speakers

Do you have a second set of cables for biwiring? It would be interesting to hear how that changes the sound, if at all. Of course, if you did that for the Ultras, then viewers would expect you to do that for every biwirable speaker, and then your tests would take twice as long. :)

Some products such as the unifi reference or the new bluos were given exposure followed by a curtain of silence. Did manufacturers realize that too much churn is as bad as stagnation? Are production chains so constrained that products can't find the way to market? Are some manufacturers clearing away old stock at higher than normal clearance prices? Can anybody with a clear view of the industry give us his/her take of what precisely is going on?

They sent them out, were well received, and suddenly a shroud of silence fell. Reviewers became evasive all of a sudden. Gutenberg himself made a strong point on the "don't buy and enjoy what you've got" theme. "If you want new sound change your room around instead" We took note. If the companies are subjecting new gear to intensive testing to ensure success, fine. If the supply chains are stuck, tell us. We've been seeing quite a handful of "forget what I've just said" all of a sudden.

What about Wilson Audio? And Bose?

How svs ultra compared to klipsch rp 600m?

Faster, more detailed and more bass (frequency extension and quantity) than the Klipsch. However, they are more sterile, less emotive and less engaging than than RP600M. Klipsch are more enjoyable for music, SVS are far better for home theatre.

I bought the 600m and sent them back because I thought the sound was over exaggerated. Some may call it "lively" I found it annoying. I now have the ultras and they sound more natural. The ultras are awesome for home theater! For music they are good but could be more refined. SVS should make a three way bookshelf that could compete with the ultra towers.

Thats not really what I meant, I said a lot of positive things about the tweeter - I am referring to the overall presentation being quite forward and direct and then the overall sensation of how the music is presented compared to the other speakers

Implementation matters more than the material used. Metal tweeters can be great sounding or they can be not so great sounding.
