AUDIOPHILE 's HiFi System Journey to their BEST SOUND !

This video is a case study of an Audiophiles HiFi system and his journey to get his system to sound its best, and his journey to me and Dirac Live. I calibrated Dirac Live for this customer and we got talking and I found his journey very interesting because I can relate to it.

Thanks for going into some of the details of the subwoofer setup. Say if Jason had a disc transport and turntable in addition to the bits you described, could you have used DSP? Every time you say to smash the thumbs down button twice I crack the F up my friend. And I just want to say that I loved the video. And that you're really motivating me to get my SHD Studio going too. I really struggled to get it working with my computer when I tried it for the first time, a while ago, and couldn't get it done. Then life threw me a few curveballs, and what not. So while I've been tweaking my system. I kind of forgot about the SHD unit. But watching your videos has got me investing in stuff to get it going. Like I just got a new Dell laptop, and I got something to hold the umik-1. But honestly it's a bit daunting, after what I went through the first time. I just couldn't get the computer to see the unit, and vice versa. Do you have any advice for me in this regard? I did read that everything had to be up to the latest updates, and all. Unfortunately I really hadn't used that other laptop in quite a while, because I bought an iPad. And started using that all the time, or my phone. So I spent hours updating it, and still couldn't get it to work. But with my new laptop. I think I should be in a lot better position now. In fact when I set it up. It automatically brought over a lot of stuff from my old laptop, because I used the same account/email. And I'm thinking I might just go ahead, and do a factory reset, then set it up with another email. So it's a completely new system with nothing from the old system at all. It's not a lot of work to do so really, just need to find the time. Do you think this is necessary? Or should I just try to get it working first? Either way. I don't mind spending the time. So long as I'm not wasting it. I feel like my last endeavor was a whole entire night, and early morning wasted. With nothing to show for it at all. I didn't even learn anything from it. Failure is OK, when you learn. But failure without learning is just pure frustration IMO, and completely useless. I'm hoping to not repeat that. BTW I'm very skilled with computers, and normally always get things working without needing any help. Even if it means staying up into the next day even. I don't like giving up. So I'm sure you can imagine the hit this was to my confidence/ego. Lol Anyway sorry for the essay, but any advice on getting this unit setup would be great. And also. Do you know where I might find a calibrator like yourself here in the states, specifically southeastern New England? And how I can find out what something like this would cost here? Hours of work sounds like it's out of my price range. At least ATM, as I'm getting ready to buy a new car soon. But I'm quite tempted just to pay someone to do it for me. Especially knowing the results will likely be better. But we'll see? ✌️

Here is a question if you have passive subwoofers: A. Put the miniDSP as you did in the digital domain. B. Put the miniDSP before the power amps so you can feed the separate subwoofer and mains power amps individually. In B you can adjust where and different slopes the crossover should be and used. And time align each subwoofer against the mains. When we have passive subwoofers we do not have any of those capabilities in there.. The specific questions is even if we need to do a AD conversation and then back with a AD. That is the main disadvantage. But should not the benefits be greater for the SQ than not bee able to do those adjustments and put it in the A variant placement ?? (So in a passive subwoofer system where is the optimal place to put the miniDSP. A or B.)

Its easier to flatten out the room response when the subs are asymmetrically positioned. They both will have wildly different room responses individually but when you add those 2 responses together the peaks and troughs of each partially cancel each other out giving a flatter response. Anomalies in frequency response have a much more obviously audible effect then any phase issues, particularly when it comes to bass.

Hi Terry, I tried the Dirac trial twice (pro version) and purchased a calibrated mic for the purppse. I must have made 5 sets of measurements and 12 different target curves. The only time I got good result was turning most features off and limiting it to below 500hz. My experience was that otherwise it made the sound stage flat and bound to the plane of the speakers, removed all that “space” around performers that I had paid a pretty penny for getting with my tube pre and gave a more “pro audio” sound (I used to make a living as a musician). I often wondered if there was something in my scenario that made things not work (e.g. my couch is unfortunately right up against the back wall), but Dirac seem to promote “it’s all easy mode” rather than maybe provide some deep dives and training material. In any case, enjoy you channel a lot. Keep up the good work 👍

Hi Sune. this my whole message, its easy software to use but not necessarily easy software to maximise what it can do. I could talk you through what you have likely done wrong but that is why I offer a service. There is an element of maybe the removal of a phasing situation - all Dirac does is adjust the freq response you hear and improve the speakers impulse response - therefore if things are done correctly it cant possibly make the sound worse only better

It's not that simple. We'll need much more info to even give a ballpark figure. There's way too many variables. There are formulas that can be found, but in the real world, they don't really ring true. The sensitivity figure of a speaker is just the beginning. The impedance curve is also very important. As well as the amount, size, and weight of the drivers. As well as the type of speakers. How far your sit from them. The overall makeup of the room. Including it's size, shape, amount of damping material in it, to include soft furnishings etc. The amount of people normally in the room. The levels you normally listen at. The music you normally listen to. Etc. Etc. Etc. It all matters. And then there's the amp. What type is it? How well built is the power supply in it? What type of power supply is in it? Or, occasionally, outside of it? What year, make, and model? Etc. Etc. Etc. Despite what some will tell you. Watts are most certainly not watts. Not to mention you don't really know if the speaker, or amp manufacturer's are being honest with their ratings. It goes on, and on. However, the great part is that you can never go wrong with too much wattage. In almost every case. So long as you can control yourself. Although sometimes the volume knob will ramp up too fast for it to be very useful. I would go to a HiFi forum that's friendly, like Audiokarma, Audio Asylum, Audio Circle, or DIY Audio. And tell them everything you can. Especially what speakers you own. Your room size. How far away you sit. What volumes, and music you prefer. Along with the amps you're looking to choose from. They will get you there. And always remember. There's a big difference between an amp being able to play speakers loudly enough for you. And an amp that's properly driving those speakers. It can, and will affect the way they will sound. And by quite a lot too. Also headroom is your friend. If 50 watts will properly drive your setup. I recommend you get at least twice that, if you can afford it. The more powerful amp, all things being equal, will almost always sound better. Good luck. ✌️

You do not have to be sorry. Many non audiophiles have damaged their ears by playing music very loudly so of what use is even CD quality to them. I doubt Spotify would have made the move to CD quality except for the implicit threat that Apple posed. As a Classical and jazz listener I find that much Classical music is available as SACDs and one can hear the difference. However, given the volume at which many Spotify listeners listen I would not be able to tell the difference at that volume. Despite the difference in musical tastes I really enjoy your reviews. Everything you have suggested John won't work and all it will create is an unbalanced room. Soft furnishings have minimal acoustic properties at anything other than higher frequencies the same as egg cartons. Loading a room with them will reduce the rt60 time at just those frequencies leaving the rest to ring at the same rate as normal. That will sound weird. With professional treatments you have a more balanced rate of absorption down to much lower frequencies and therefore will have a more balanced sounding room for rates of decay which is what matters. The old soft furnishings things is totally counterintuitive when you look at the bigger picture as its doing nothing where it really counts. A man's home is what he has to work with the listening room is just one room in a family home

Although there's shelving (racks have ear mount rails), I don't understand organizing gear on the ground between the speakers. When did this become a thing? Reggae, Funk & Brass 🔈🔉🔊
