I bought new both Motorcycles. Currently still own 2013 dl 650 w/106,000 miles & a 2021 Honda cb500x w 7,000 miles Very good video. I am 6' 3 1/2 ". Both outstanding motorcycles. Dl 650 is my group big trips and camping motorcycle. Easily cruise 90 miles an hour all day. Moab motorcycle. Honda cb500x is my day trips and slow technical dirt road motorcycle. Cruises best at 72-77 miles an hour. (No gear, only a small rear bag--snack for my trips) Bought Honda because great reviews, almost 100lbs lighter than the Dl 650 (dl with top case and gear) Dl 650 is a little top heavy at low speeds. Honda is a lot easier to pick up when a tip over. If in a slight up or downhill the Honda is so much easier to man handle. Something I could not back up Dl 650. Get stuck. Too Heavy. As long as moving it is a pleasure to ride. If you stop in wrong location. Ouch! Get ready for a workout. Yes, the Dl 650 is a better motorcycle. But riding off road by myself the Honda cb500x is a lot more manageable/Fun. The Honda I am able to ride on road too afraid of to take the Dl 650. noticeable I feel very lucky to own both. Could live with ever one. Honda is better off road but can handle fwy. Dl 650 handles fwy effortlessly but does fine off road. First impression of Honda cb500x. This feels like a toy. Very well sorted. Low 1st gear. 1st gear not as fun for street but outstanding for off road, steep up and downhills. No stalling. Very happy with this motorcycle. Dl 650 better engine breaking, a lot faster motorcycle. Wider gear ratio. I ride with the BMW 1200 gs & no problems on road hanging with them. DL 650 is a fast motorcycle. Off road BMW hands down is a lot better. Great off-road suspension. BMW 1200 or 1250 gs are the best motorcycles in the world if you can afford it. But off road, an elephant. If tip over, you better have friends with you to help you pick it up. Note I did also own a 2017 Hayabusa for 4 yrs. and put 35,000 miles on it. Really cool motorcycle. But would not buy another one. Only problem with Hayabusa too fast for the street. Hard to only ride fwy speeds. Yes, that is one fast motorcycle. 150 miles an hour in 3rd gear! Yes, will do the 186 miles per hour. Yep! If you do track days, the motorcycle makes sense. Everyday riding NO! Better choices out there. smile

I think you are missing an important comparison of fuel consumption, the v Strom 650 consumes approximately 17 to 20 percent more than the CB 500, which if you use it often is something to consider perhaps.

I was waiting for somebody to finally directly compare those two. 2 years ago I was looking for a new motorcycle and those were exactly the 2 I narrowed my choice to. I fully agree with all that has been said in this video but in my opinion some differences are even bigger than described. Before the test rides I really wanted to get the CB500X because it was better looking and it would save me some cash but after the test rides I knew 100% that the Vstrom is my winner. I can see a lot of CB500X fans here in the comments but I really disagree with a statement that there are "only little differences" between those bikes. I'm sorry but in my opinion the CB500X felt more like a toy compared to the Vstrom 650. The power, the torque (!), the comfort, stability, it's all way better on the Vstrom. CB500X is surprisingly small in the real life, don't let the videos/photos fool you. If you're really interested in any of those bikes make sure you get a test ride before the purchase! Of course it all depends and I see many scenarios where the smaller CB500X would suit you better but I'd say that if you're looking for a bike that will take you on a longer yourneys in comfort and you're skilled enough not to be afraid of the size and weight then it's definitely worth to spend those few pennies more and get the Suzuki. At least that's what I did and I'm super happy about that, it puts the smile on my face during every ride!

@@W3TFART #1: I watch a lot of motorcycle reviews. Different brands, different models, just to be "up to date" with what's on the market. But I only had a chance to ride very few of those bikes myself in the real world. So I was simply curious how somebody else would compare those two in a review, would he have a similar opinion to mine or perhaps he would see them completely differently. #2: I had seen a lot of CB500X reviews before I went for a test ride and almost every one of them was praising this motorcycle as if it was a Holy Grail. Same case with the comments under those videos. When I finally rode that bike myself however, it was unfortunately a bit of a disappointment. Don't get me wrong, it is a very nice motorcycle in many ways but at the same time I think it's just a little overhyped. Watching separate reviews of the CB500X and the Vstrom one might get a feeling (at least I did back then) that the Honda is better than the Suzuki or at least that they are very comparable (while the Honda is cheaper so why overpay?). After the test rides though I felt something completely different, Vstrom seemed to be a much more mature bike to me, I felt like I was getting +50% of the motorcycle for just a few % more cash. I also wanted to see the comments under a video directly comparing those 2 to see other people's opinion as well. So in short: I was just curious :) Cheers!

Good comparison. My friend has a 2021 CB500X, and one thing that surprised me was the clutch and gear box. You can easily pull the clutch in with your pinky and the transmission feels as smooth as a light switch. Great beginner bike, or someone wanting to ride on a budget (regular fuel, and a little bit will get you a long way). It clearly doesn't have the power of the Vstrom, but with an aftermarket exhaust, it even sounds pretty good. And with that said, I'm a big fan of Suzuki's 650 engine, the Vstrom is quite a bargain, if Suzuki replaced their designers, they could sell a heck of a lot more bikes.

If you are just roading it with some gravel here and there, then either will do, but the 650 is more comfortable over 70mph. The cb500x takes off road way better though. I have a rally raid 500x and it is something you can actually take on trail (actual adventure biking/camping) with the rally raid packages. i picked up mine with mosko bags and rally raid package for 5k, so a no brainer there. Just really depends whether you want to be able to take it offroad, lay it down and pick it back up etc. the v strom feels way bigger.

The cb500x is SIGNIFICANTLY better offroad than the v-strom, it is higher off the ground, is much lighter, and has a much shorter wheelbase. Yea you need a skidplate to protect the exhaust headers, and better tires, but thats the case with any motorcycle. Agree the wind protection is poor and the engine is too weak to be fun on 110km/h + motorways. Also, the fuel efficiency at city driving speeds on the CB500x is unreal, but that goes out the window at motorway speeds.

Higher up the rev range when you work the engine it gets a bit vibey. Brakes are very good. Physically it's comfy. Fuel economy (yawn) is pretty good. 80mpg on motorway. Cheap to insure and service. Exhaust sounds on overrun is brilliant. A static rev doesn't show off the sound at all. Pops and crackles aplenty off throttle. Fuel mapping at low speed is not great. I find it's very snatchy between 0 throttle and applying some throttle. I find it it very easy to move around on or off the bike. Great bike to learn skills on

VStrom wins in my book. My son in law picked up a used early VStrom with high mileage as a spare bike for when I visit. Bargain price of $3,500 USD. The high mileage is no issue; runs and handels like it just came off the show room; only better with premium aftermarket tiers 😘. It is absolutely remarkable how evenly matched it is to his new 2020 BMWF900XR.😱 Astounding. The VStrom actually works better than the new Beemer XR on gravel secondary roads in the mountains of Idaho. Keeps up easily on paved twisties. 😎 The CB500X has always looked good to me on paper, but after riding an older high mileage VStrom I can't praise it enough.🥳

I like them both for different reasons .. They are both in the "Bullet Proof "category with the king of bullet proof - the KLR 650 that just came back onto the Market .(The US military used that bike with a Diesel motor ). I think Zack Courts said he would take the KLR to the tip of south America over the BMW 1250 just for its simplicity ..Forte Nine has talked it up as well in two different clips .. . That said I like that the two bikes you chose here have some of that bullet proof DNA .. Being a rider using just 10% thruway (motorways) and 30% gravel/dirt I guess I would look for the Yamaha T7 (if any were able to be found here in New England ) My son just got the new KLR 650 and it really is an amazing bike .. The Kawasaki Versys is another gem in this group that can be found for a great price second hand ... Great clip Rob ...

It's just too small for North America, with the highways we have. The engine was weak and buzzy and I didn't feel at home. I lost a good amount of money selling a brand new bike and swapping it for a 2021 V-strom 650. Now I'm bikeless again, my girlfriend smashed into my bike while on her first rider.... Suzuki needs to update the design of the 650 to look similar to the 1050 i think. That would seal the deal for me. The Honda looks far better now. Regarding heated grips, you can get them for the Honda but it will set you back 380£ plus any potential cost of fitting them. I also believe Suzuki offers a far longer warranty than Honda does. It’s definetely something to look into. The Suzuki comes with spoked wheels as an option. The Honda does not and you need to get wheels and tires from an aftermarket dealer which would make the cb500x the more expensive option.

Be nice to see the Versys in this comparison since basically the same class and head-to-head against the vstrom. The CB500X is interesting to me but a little overpriced for what you actually get. Out of the 500 Hondas that are all the same basic engine and platform, it is the most expensive but should it be? That being said, I heard a Scrambler version is coming, and that would interest me the most given the platform. Like many others have said in other comp videos, if the Versys 300 was bumped up to 400, I might pick it over all of these. I have a SV650 already, so it would be interesting to have its VStrom cousin as well. But given I have the SV, it probably makes more sense for the 2nd bike to have much better off-road capability that would point towards a DUAL SPORT INSTEAD of any of these so-called "adventure" bikes. Even adventure riders like Itchy Boots switched from her CB500X to a CRF300L.

oops, so I sold my 2013 Triumph Street R for a CB500x 2021. Yes I was aware it was approx. half the power and 2/3 the torque but thought I'd see what the adventure bike hype was about and great reviews of the Honda, many by seasoned riders of diverse bikes. First impressions are, love the wind protection but anything is an improvement on a naked bike. I have fitted windscreen raisers and Acerbis hand guards as well as Oxford heated grips. Bike came with sump guard and Ventrura rack. In all bike is comfortable to ride, very economical and cheap to insure. Compared to my Triple the sound of the Honda is fairly throaty. Not as easy to thread thro traffic but does the job. A great commuter I am sure it would be fine on the longer 2-3 day ride. I have an air cushioned Airhawk from a previous bike. With my Ventrura luggage bag it has to be one of the most practical, good value bikes on the market. I suspect it will be reliable and reckon it will be easy to service. Only thing is wish it had more power. Next bike maybe a Triumph Tiger>.

Eh, I don't agree that there is anything close to a clear "winner" between the two. They're more-or-less the same bike with a few small design differences, both from very highly reputable manufacturers. Bottom line, you can pay a little more money for a bit more engine oomph and a few more accessories. I bought a used vstrom 650 a couple months ago and love it, but had I come across a used cb500 first for a similarly fair price I don't think I would have had any regrets going with it instead. I don't ride for the sound, but I do have to say that between the two the vstrom has an infinitely more satisfying rumble. I've been a bit disappointed with the mileage (mid-40s MPG), but I have been riding a lot at highway speeds and have a raised wind screen so I can't complain too much. The position is very comfortably and upright, I've ridden across my state a few times (~3hr) without any complaints. Parts are easy to come by and there's a vibrant community of folks. Is the "all black" look a bit boring? Haha maybe, but not a deal breaker for me.

    1. Engine. V-twins don't inherently produce more power when considering other factors such as: tuning, displacement, and overall vehicle dynamics. In fact, the added weight and complexity of a V-twin motor could end up making less power than a well-tuned parallel-twin motor of equal displacement. I had a used naked Strom 10 years ago. Now my friend wanted to try my Strom and I his 500 Ninja. So down the freeway 10 miles to lunch, I didn't notice any less freeway performance until we got on to city traffic where I felt a drop in torque. Ninja = fast! 2. Sound. Sound is relative. I have never based any bike I had by it's stock sound. And I've made the mistake of getting custom exhaust only to find out it's only louder on the Dyno. 3. Handling. No that's not relative. I noticed on my buddy's Ninja I was less stable on the road. Let's put it this way, I didn't control the wind, it controlled me. The Strom humbled the wind. Well, maybe not like a Harley but better than the Ninja. With the Ninja I had to lean forward to much more so that was a no. 4. Off-Road. Face it, the Strom is a pig off road. It's a glorified streetbike with it's stock tires. If you put knobs on it then you only have a lousy heavy dirtbike, especially when you compare it to my 2-stroke Yamaha IT 400 Enduro, which was motocross bike with lights. 5. Comfort I have to say that my Strom was very comfortable compared to many bikes I've had in the past. 6. Tech: What's tech? Bells and Whistles? The Strom has some important components when it comes to Tech. Adjustable shocks, and sensors galore. 7. Styling. Again, subjective. I still think my Strom was sexy having that V-twin and all, which was before I found out that power wise a V-twin is mute. 8. Price: I have never purchased any vehicle new in my intire life. Let another sucker pay that automatic 15-20% loss out the dealership door. I got my first street Enduro for half price, with only 4000 miles on it. That's how I roll...

I have owned both. A 2014 CB500X and now I ride a 2020 V-Strom 650XT. The V-Strom is a vastly superior motorcycle in my opinion. The only thing I miss on the Honda was the unbelievably good fuel economy and range. (70 MPG and 300 miles per tank) The V-Strom is much more engaging to ride. Perfect amount of power and still gets good fuel economy. (55 MPG and 250 miles per tank) I found the V-Strom to be more comfortable on long rides. Brakes, suspension and handling are all better on the V-Strom over the CB. The CB500X is definitely too buzzy for higher speed riding and runs out of puff too quickly. I would buy another V-Strom 650 but I would not buy another CB500X.

  • @crimsonsamuraiftw

    @crimsonsamuraiftw

    2 жыл бұрын

Yes and no. Compared to both, Vstrom is probably the better all arounder. Where the NC might come into play is slightly better top end and passing power, and while it still maintains the same mpg superiority, however it also cancels out the main advantage of the c500x had over the vstrom in the fuel range with a smaller tank (from 300+mi to only 200+mi going to even less than the vstrom,) as well as having that unwieldy location for the gas cap underneath the seat which can be cumbersome if you are carrying any loads - although that does help make for slightly better handling as well. So in the end ymmv, as they are all pretty much in the same ballpark, and ultimately depends on intended use case.

Test drove bough and like the Honda CB 500 x much better, but you did not talk about millage witch is one very high point on a ADV bike if that is what you are going to be using it for. The 2022 CB 500 x is getting over 500 Km per tank of gas The V Strom only 400 km per tank of gas Honda CB 500 X, 3.5 liters per 100 km V Strom 4.9 liters per 100 To me that can make a huge difference, If you are traveling the back roads or going on a long trip. I also felt a lot better on the windy roads on the Honda, but the Suzuki was also quite good. Tires can also make a big difference there. As for comfort I liked the Honda, don't count wind protection there as most of my bikes do not have any. and wind screens up grades can be had for bough to give you more if that is what you want. cost of maintenance is also very important, and think Honda winds there as the engine is much easer to get at. Your review was ok but way out dated, check out the difference on the new bikes as that is what most will be looking at. Hear in Canada the difference between a good used bike and a new one is not a lot, and you get a warranty with the new one.

I was easily getting 3.5 l/100km out of my 650 V-Strom (previous shape to one in video). I'd normally hit my first reserve light (14l out of a 20l tank) at about 415km for 3.3 l/100km in about 80/20% highway/urban stop-start riding for the average work commute of 40km one way. Over 500km from a tank of petrol was easily achievable day in day out. I agree the windscreen wasn't the best though, but it was comfortable enough for my commute (after a crotch rocket!) and the engine was buttery smooth with a very nice and progressive power/torque band for its size. That Suzuki 650 V-Twin is IMHO one of the motor cycling world's great engines with stacks of character, strong 'every day' performance for its size, and it's virtually bulletproof. It's what IMHO makes the bike. The Honda is better made with more up to date equipment etc, but that Honda 471cc parallel twin, as good as it is, IMHO has nothing on the 645cc Suzuki engine for sheer character, noise and riding enjoyment, which in the end isn't that why many ride? I'm happy enough to make some of these 'tech'/ equipment compromises just to have a bike with that wonderful little engine!

Yah chickened out and botched the off-road category here Bob, by virtue of it's weight the cb wins on this point. Then you left off range as a category and the cb wins here too, Verdict ...a tie. It comes down to: do you want an ugly heavy bike that does 70 mph a little better or a lighter easier to ride nice looking bike that is fantastic up to 60 mph.

Vstrom all the way. If you can deal with the fugly headlight. It’s a better bike all round. CB still a great bike but Vstrom is holistically better except for looks 😂

It's a very fair assessment on paper. However having ridden both of these bikes I find the Honda a much smoother ride. Speaking as a novice to intermediate rider the 500x is more forgiving for novice riders. The V-strom has more power and wants to pull more and had a very jerky throttle. It could just have been the version that I was riding. But I've ridden several 500x now and I find it compensates for my lack of skill. It's very comfortable in the lower rev range and also you have to push the revs very hard to get it to redline. I was coming up a hill in 2nd and the terrain chainged in a way I wasn't used to and I switched to 1st and it spiked to 8000pm for about 10 seconds before the terrain changed again leveling out and she increased only 1 temperature bar for a few minutes. I'm not sure I could say the same for the V-strom. It's definitely not a beginner friendly bike.

I'll take the bike that does not give you trouble passing cars on a highway going 70 mph.
