Oh man, this brings back the memories. My first bike was a 1987 Suzuki Rm 125. I had that bike from new when I was 7yrs old and still have it today. The motor is locked up and has been sitting since 2006 under a tarp in the garage. This gives me motivation to open it up and get it running again.

I have the 97 RM 125 also with a clutch that seems like it never disengages when I pull in the lever. Even if I push the actuator arm forward by hand as far as it will go. Likes to stall when put in 1st gear if not moving the bike forward. Now I’m having trouble getting it to go into 3rd gear... Clutches and basket are stock but look great and I lubed plates with Synthetic 10w40. Haven’t tried to run the bike yet but did changing the plates work for you? Or do you think it’s the shift forks/drum? Thanks...

I'm 6'1 and 250fat but a 125cc is a lot more fun if you are riding a track and getting out of turns. If you want more top speed and ride a fast track or dunes the 250cc is good. You really can't lose with either size and for reference I have a Yamaha Blaster that snaps out of the corners but I prefer my YZ125 when riding bikes. Pops

My brother is taking care of a RM-Z 250 for a friend, and it works like a charm. It is a racing bike and is a bike that requires a lot of attention, like changing the oil after 20 hours of driving. Sorry for yapping, but if you want a fun Suzuki, look into the 2013 RM-Z.

Do you always have to put the silicone sealant stuff on the gasket? Or is ok if you don’t?

No you don't need to put rtv silicone gasket maker on most gaskets. But it's always a good idea and safe preventative to apply a thin coat, helps to ensure a leak free engine (no air leaks that your eye can't visibly see without a leak down test). Important thing to make sure your surface is prepped and cleaned properly, no knicks or gouges, no left over debris or old gaskets.

You don't have to, but it prevents any leaking from engine. I'd rather apply a thin coat of gasket maker than have to go back and fix a leak later.

The clutch basket does not groove because you do wheelies trust me I've been riding dirt bikes for 25 year and work on them in shops for like 8 years form normal wear and tear have taken stunt bikes apart and the clutch is flawless and they do wheelies all the time.

Yeah there's a lot of opinions out there. If you think about it to race or just to ride good. You have to pop the clutch to start and in various other situations. All most people have to do is upgrade clutch pack and spring some older models maybe little bit more. This also would have many factors on life of machine.
